Wraps worn at extremities with very slight chipping to base of spine; a few creases to spine. Slight lean to spine, but binding holding soundly. Overall Very Good. The bound in leaf, inserted by an unknown previous party, was signed while Joyce was living in Paris and Finnegan's Wake was being published serially under the title "fragments from Work in Progress." Just one example significantly foxed and dampstained, just one example with closed tear affecting border, else nearly all in Near Fine condition with just occasional light foxing and toning to paper. Substantial and remarkably well-preserved collection of souvenir napkins of which the majority (thirty-three examples) bear the imprint of Sarah Burgess. Collection of thirty-seven (37) silver gelatin photographs (chiefly 19x24cm or the inverse) affixed to original grey card mounts (28x35.5cm), all either captioned in image or in pencil along bottom margin of mounts, all initialed in pencil on verso. Two images starting to curl and separate from mounts, some images a bit washed out from over exposure at time of development, a few small losses to mount margins not affecting captions, else Very Good or better. Rare series of photographs documenting the utter chaos involved in the construction of the earliest branch of the New York subway system, the Elm St Route which cut over to Broadway via 42nd Street with a branch under Lenox Ave. Construction took place simultaneously in fifteen different segments, the work conducted by almost as many contractors. One hundred and eight (108) movie advertisement text cards, nearly all hand-painted in white on stiff black card stock and measuring ca. 17.5x18cm to ca. 20x20.5cm.; many with painted pictorial elements or color printed paste-ons. General wear to margins, some placards suffering shallow losses at extremities not affecting text or illustration while a few have larger pieces missing, though the vast majority in Very Good condition. Date based on the lone dated advertisement (1929). A remarkable time capsule from the early days of blending film-going with advertisement, one placard even promoting this form, promising that "This novel advertising medium brings results to the merchant." Not only did it bring results, it was also cheap for the movie house to produce: at least sixteen of the examples here are painted on the versos of trimmed silent film text cards. Boards gently scuffed, a few tiny closed tears to jacket extremities, margins very slightly toned, orange jacket spine titling lightly faded, else a Very Good or better copy. A superlative and early American printing of one of the most enduring children's books in the English language which just celebrated its hundredth anniversary last year. "Harper's Bazaar" first commissioned the story in 1921 from Margery Williams Bianco, at the time a stalled author of adult fiction who hadn't published a work in eight years.
