This scarce, official printing of the collected laws passed by the Fifth United States Congress, includes the notorious Alien and Sedition Acts, passed in 1798. 'There are three Alien acts, which grew directly out of the XYZ Affair and the failure of the embassy to France. Debate began in April 1798, as the story was reported to Congress. The first bill, the Naturalization Act, was signed into law on June 18, 1798. It increased the residency requirement for American citizenship from five to fourteen years and created other hurdles to citizenship (the majority of emigrants were supporters of the Jeffersonian Republicans). From the collection of renowned children's literature collector, Justin G. Schiller. Finely illustrated with large folio etchings by famous art deco designer, Etienne Drain. Limited illustrated edition, number 296 of 396 copies, of this adult version based on stories by the master of the French literary fairy tale, Charles, Perrault, with 12 rich full-page etchings and five etched headpieces by Étienne Drian. Perrault is often credited with writing such famous fairytales as 'La Belle au Bois Dormant' ('Sleeping Beauty'), 'Cendrillon' ('Cinderella'), 'Barbe-Bleue' ('Bluebeard'), and 'Peau-d'Ane' ('Donkey Skin') to amuse his own children. This edition, however, has been re-written and illustrated for an adult audience. First published in 1858, this is one of Holmes' more popular literary works. The novel is a series of essays, featuring a collection of boarders who gather around a table, providing an audience for the wit and philosophy of the Autocrat. The essays take the form of conversations that generally develop into monologues. First American Edition. Two Volume Set. The most famous explorer of his day, Stanley's fame was made by James Gordon Bennett's commission sending him to search for Livingstone. In 1886 Stanley led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition to rescue Emin Pasha, the governor of Equatoria in southern Sudan. After immense hardship and great loss of life, Stanley met Emin in 1886, discovered the Ruwenzori Range and Lake Edward, then emerged from the interior at the end of 1889. Stanley's famous account of his expedition to relieve Emin Pasha (Eduard Schnitzer), the beleaguered governor of equatorial Sudan, contains some of his most celebrated writing, especially his account of the tortuous 450-mile passage through the dense Ituri rain forest.
