Binder. Fair. A generous twentieth-century sample book representing several decades of the Nottingham lace trade. Assembled in a purpose-made binder, 17 x 9.5 x 4.5 inches, ideal for adding, removing, and generally rearranging pages. 157 total samples, mostly half-page size, around 8 x 6 inches. The tallest sample unfolds to 28” and several others extend between leaves up to 14 inches wide. Each specimen has a small label with manuscript number. Several numerical series are represented in the binder, likely referring to different mills. 12 of the samples have an “Alan Litman, Ltd.” sticker, a wholesaling firm founded in 1946 and one of the few businesses to weather the Nottingham lace industry’s terminal decline throughout the twentieth century. The samples are compiled in a Priestley & Swann “Patent Self Binder” that allows for contents to be regularly updated and changed out to reflect stock. First edition, presumed published in the late 1860s, this is a possible later issue with reference to the Vienna Worlds Fair in the publishers ads. Small oblong quarto, 7 x 10.75 inches, bound in pebbled cloth with beveled boards, decorative gilt stamped title. 18 leaves consisted of a title page, preface, 15 leaves of alphabets, and publishers notice at rear. Title pages and three alphabets printed with blue and red accents and gilt ornamentation. A Very Good copy with mild intermittent foxing, sunning and rubbing to boards. This is the first book of alphabets published by Prang. Transliterated characters and bibliographical information pulled from the Boston Public Library’s catalog entry for the set, which also specifies the title comprises eight bibliographical volumes in five physical volumes. [Tokyo: Yoshikawa K bunkan, Meiji 26 (c.1893)]. Title loosely translated to Thoughts on fashion in the past or Historical collection of historical clothing, etc. Five octavo volumes printed on double leaves in Japanese stab bindings, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. A Very Good complete set with mild soil to wraps, heavier on volumes one and three. Overall bright and clean with infrequent mild foxing to the outer pages of the volumes. Later bookseller labels pasted over original labels on the covers (just peeking through on two of the volumes), numerical labels inside each cover. Greenwich, Conn.: Chaspec Manufacturing Company, ca. 1950s. 24 stamps, 4 stamp pads and a collection of papers housed in a printed box, 13 x 21 inches. The box has general surface soil and wear, a few areas of abrasion around the edges, panels a little askew but very solid. The ink pads inside the tins have disintegrated, leaving the tins a little rusty, and at some point the blue ink bled on some of the papers (which get stashed in a hidden compartment underneath the inks). The kit is usedabout seven of the supplied papers are stampedand has ink smudges, trial stampings on the underside of the lid, and expected ink staining on the stamps themselves, but is miraculously complete. Issoire, France: Made by hand, ca. 1880. Softcover. Very good. 8.25 x 7 inches, [68] pages. Saddle stitched single weight textblock, each leaf with the embossed seal of Pensionnat Notre-Dame à Issoire, a boarding school in central France. Ink and pencil manuscript with select titles in a shimmer effect. Occasional fingersoil and smudging, unsurprising given the nature of the book, but no particular damage or disfigurement. The last few pages appear to have been requisitioned by a cruder artist (like you might expect of a younger sibling), but the quality of the work is otherwise spectacular. The first section covers geometric shapes and surfaces, comprising 18 pages of text and 8 full pages of figures; the second relates those geometric foundations to creating artistic designs with naturalistic elements. The appropriately flourished 3 pages of text is followed by 17 pages of drawings, including some wonderful freehand illustrations of botanical and ornamental flourishes, plus a few great furniture… Leer más

Ca. mid-late 19th century British alphabet spelling tiles housed in a wood slide-top box with hand-colored lithograph label. Letters divided into sections with punctuation and special characters in the last slots. A number of large capitals appear from another set, but a reasonably attentive count of the original letters numbers them around 380. Pretty good! Small hole above the second "A" on the lid, a little overall wear but very sturdy and clean overall. Aesthetically spot-on. With the lion and unicorn Great Britain Coat of Arms at the top of the instructions, which are pasted on the underside of the sliding lid and use British spellings. No stated publisher or date; Bottom has the inscription "Ruth Mann from Mrs. Coppin Xmas 1923, Seagate."

[Bath, England]: Harbutt's Plasticine, Ltd., ca. 1920s. Very good. Deep lid box with graphic lid, 11 x 15 x 1.5 inches. Instructions for the system are printed under the lid; this kit contains all 7 stencil sets called for, plus 2 sets of colored backgrounds (10x6 and 8x5), 3 sets of toned backgrounds (10x6, 8x5, 7x3.75), 12 postcards, 12 greeting cards, three sets of powders and stamps, a rubbing cloth, and a couple of erasers. Which supplies other than the stencil sets should be included is not listed, but the box is quite well packed with extras. The lid has several stitches of tape around the edges and abrasion/wear around the lid, small chip/loss at one corner of the lid. The contents are unsurprisingly a bit dusty/powdery, containing all three colors of stencil powder and stamps. The paper envelopes are a bit fragile and two have tears near the flaps. Color printed wraps, 8vo, 45pp. Very Good with sunning and 1-inch chip to the cover at the top of the spine. The influential handbook by educator, activist, and co-founder of the Black Nationalist group The Republic of New Afrika, Brother Imari Obadele (born Richard B. Henry). "In this short book Brother Imari, an heir to Brother Malcolm, carries Malcolm's theoretical work to its logical conclusion. He tells how the black man's revolutionary War in America, now being fought, must be fought in the future. Very Good with mild fraying and tearing to the folder, contents Near Fine. 80pp explanatory booklet a bit fragile, printed in simultaneous German, English and French. Offers detailed instructions for preparing and assembling the finished dishes, as well as abbreviated recipes for making the component parts, like ham paste, as necessary. 170 plates housed in 3 additional booklets, containing over 700 illustrations of supremely artistic cold dishes, including assorted meat concoctions dressed like patisserie. Savory dishes require the bulk of the explanatory text, but the plate volumes are full of geometric, floral and figurative designs that apply to food presentation in general. A large home-fashioned padded green leatherette binder with colored paper lining and cord tie. 13 x 10 x 2 inches. 12 folio leaves stacked and bound through two holes. Very Good with light general handling wear, mild age discoloration and rubbing to exterior, some stress to the pages due to the binding style. Covers personalized with faded gold paint, very charming indeed. 60 total samples including mending, hemming, fasteners, smocking, pockets, collars, etc. An evocative first page drawing of a young woman in an oversize coat holding a racquet over one shoulder, and another one-and-a-half arms/hands in her pocket on the other side. A very stylized evolution of the couture sewing notebook, several pages of examples are incorporated with collage elements. Several pages have bold color blocked examples in wool felt, and many traditional individual samples are also present.

New York: A. S. Barnes & Co., 1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Publisher's decorative gilt-stamped cloth binding, 8vo; 166 + 18p ads. A touch of soil and rubbing, spine ends fraying, VG+ to Near Fine condition. Handsome publisher's binding with gilt-stamped bee medallion. Signature of Harriet M. Starks to the front pastedown, else clean and unmarked. First edition, dedicated to the trustees of LaPorte Public Schools, where Hailmann was serving as Superintendent at the time of publication. Scarce work outlining methods for teachers to incorporate Froebel gifts into the classroom and 'guard them against the evils of random "busy work.'" Copious monochrome illustrations with particular emphasis on the use of manual training in teaching arithmetic, resulting in some of the more uncommon Froebel images we've come across. An important work, scarce in commerce.

None. Very good. Original gouache painting on panel, 11.75 x 10 inches. Printed calendar for 1950 mounted beneath the image. 7.75 x 7 inches. A buff-toned panel painted white on both sides with an inset frame, giving the impression of being a matted painting. Small ribbon hanging loop affixed to the top for display. A subdued but evocative still life after French painter Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), renowned for his floral still lifes. Known as the "Betrothal Still Life," the original painting was completed in 1869 and has characteristically deep tones, which our painter feels are lacking from this copy. A note on the back reads: "This is a copy I have made from a Fantin-Latour that I saw that time in France - I brought back a small photograph and a vivid memory so that the whole is not unlike - but it is too light in tone - a thing I cannot easily avoid in this medium." Very Good oversize volume with expected stress and wear to the joints and spine ends; about two inches of faint dampstaining to the bottom gutter throughout the textblock and slim halo of toning around the edges, related darkening to the exterior of the binding, relatively inconspicuous given the deep shade of the binding. A pioneer of radiography whose early death contributed to the scientific understanding of, and efforts to mitigate, the toxic effects of radiation exposure. Black 3-ring binder with 6 tabbed sections beginning with individual letters, a variety of common stroke combinations, and a great "Index to Traits and Characteristics Identified by Strokes" at rear. This was claimed to be "the first work in Graphoanalysis to provide a quick and easy reference for stroke definitions." IGAS was founded by Milton Bunker, who published on the science of handwriting evaluation as well as popular interest books like 'Secrets Your Handwriting Reveals About You,' which helped generate leads for his 'Graphoanalysis General Course.' OCLC records no current holdings of this first edition and only 2 copies of the third edition from 1998.
