The title Atvatabar I references the science-fiction story The Goddess of Atvatabar by William Richard Bradshaw. The story is based on the theory that the planet on which we live is a hollow shell that is one thousand miles in thickness within which are entire continents and oceans that are all lit by an interior sun. Helen Frankenthaler came of age in the midst of the avant-garde art scene in New York in the 1950s. 'The discovery of the Southern Continent, whenever, and by whomsoever it may be completely effected, is in justice due to this immortal name' (Alexander Dalrymple). Between 1607 and 1614 Quiros wrote a series of petitions (or memorials) addressed to the King of Spain requesting that he be given command of another voyage to find the great hidden continent: Terra Australis Incognita. Portraits of the Turkish emperors from the series Recueil des Portraits des Empereurs Ottomans.This is the first edition, first issue of the plates, which were printed up to 1808. The watermarks on the paper are dated 1808.Arguably the greatest series of colour plates on the Ottoman Empire, with engravings after portraits by a Greek peasant 'who displayed such proofs of natural talent as to induce the Emperor Selim to patronise him'.
