New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1925. The book is signed by Ernest Hemingway in the upper right corner of the front free endpaper and is, in all likelihood, from the personal library of Hemingway. Hemingway had worked for Ford on the staff of the Transatlantic Review in 1924, the year before this book was published. It was purchased (by Hemingway?) from the iconic Holliday Bookstore (note the label on the rear pastedown endpaper). Provenance: I purchased the book 25 years ago from the estate of a Jacksonville, Florida book collector, and it has been in my personal collection since then. The book is a second printing in about good condition: there is some waviness of pages--perhaps damaged when Hemingway was "deaccessioning" it from his Key West home when he was at the apogee of his personal feud with Ford?. New York: Laurel Gallery, 1947. Limited edition: #47 of an edition of 60 impressions of five original prints, each of which is SIGNED in pencil by the artist. The original prints include "My Wife Sally," an original drypoint by Milton Avery; an etching by Walter Pach, titled "Scopasian Head"; an etching with engraving and offset color by Gabor Peterdi, titled "The Dreamy Lobster"; a serigraph by Leonard Pytlak, titled "After the Fire"; and "Twentieth Century Machine," an engraving by Alfred Russell. The prints are housed in the original handmade paper portfolio, which is housed in the original ribbon-tied hardcover "box." Accompanying the prints are: 1) a large sheet folded to form 4 folio pages containing essays by each of the 5 artists explaining their perspectives on modern art; the latter is adorned with 3 original designs by Alfred Russell that are hand-colored by him; and 2) a prospectus/order form for Laurels #1 and Laurels #2.… Leer más

New York: The Century Co., 1884. The image is 4 5/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches on artist board measuring 14 1/2 inches by 12 1/4 inches. Original ink drawing by Walton Taber (1857-1933), after a post-battle photograph. The scene shows dead Confederate soldiers in front of Battery Robinette on October 5, 1862, the morning after the battle at Corinth, Mississippi. Civil War historians J. Matthew Gallman and Gary W. Gallagher attributed the photograph to Ohio born and Corinth based photographer George Washington Armistead . However, the Library of Congress has a virtually identical photographic negative that is attributed to Nicholas D. Brown. Although the photographer's identity remains uncertain, it is clear that the drawing is by Walton Taber and is signed by him in the lower left corner of the image. Taber did the drawing for the Century Company, who published it on page 751 of volume 2 of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. New York City: Unpublished, 1949. Four-line poem handwritten in pencil by famed poet William Carlos Williams on a 10 1/4" by 7 7/8" sheet of lined paper with 2 holes punched in the right margin.  Daphne Spence Williams was the first wife of WCW's son William Eric.  WCW's apparent close connection to Daphne is evidenced by his Later inscription in her copy of Journey to Love, in which he called her "sweet Daphne" and referred to himself as her "father."   The signature is clearly that of the poet prior to his series of strokes (1949-1952) and possibly prior to the marriage of Eric and Daphne in November 1949.  The item is in generally very good condition: the paper is uniformly toned, with one tiny chip out of the top edge.  The text reads: "to Daphne, . SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Collectible-Very Good. 10 1/4" by 7 7/8". Manuscript.

Crimea, 1855. Salt print from a wet collodion glass negative. 9 inches by 12 1/4 inches. Roger Fenton (1819-1869), arguably the most important British photographer of the 19th century. He founded the Royal Photographic Society in 1853 and was appointed the first official photographer of the British Museum in 1854. Perhaps he is most remembered as the first wartime photographer. In 1855 he was commissioned to document the Crimean War by Manchester publishers Thomas Agnew & Sons. The large plate salt print offered here is one of the images Fenton produced from that war. Venezia (Venice): Carlo Pecora, 1744. Two volumes (3 & 4 of 6) bound as one. Large 4to. Early full vellum binding with a brown leather title patch; all edges gilt; marbled pastedown endpapers. Parallel texts in Italian and French for seventy-two fables, each illustrated with a beautiful full-page color etching by Fossati. Each etching is printed in one of various shades of red, orange, brown, green, blue and black. In addition to the 72 plates, there are engraved vignettes on the 4 title pages, a red engraved headpiece for volume 3, and an engraved tailpiece following the text for each of the fables. Fossati (1706-1778) was an Italian architect who also was a very good printmaker and book illustrator. For the fables he portrayed animals realistically and used his architectural training for accurate renderings of baroque buildings. Williamsburg, Virginia: Printed by W. Rind, A. Purdie, and J. Dixon, 1769. (4), 577, (1) pages. First (and only) printing of this important colonial Williamsburg imprint. Late in 1767 the General Assembly authorized a third "revisal" of Virginia laws, which meant a compilation of all acts passed since the 1752 "revisal," together with all laws passed prior to 1752 that were still in effect. Ordinarily the contract for printing the book would have been awarded to the official public printer, William Rind, but Rind's financial straits caused the General Assembly to award the contract to Rind's financially stable competitors, the Williamsburg printing company of Alexander Purdie and John Dixon . Perhaps to spare Rind public embarrassment, it was decided to advertise the project as a joint venture; thus, the names of Rind, Purdie, and Dixon are listed as printers on the title page. Engraved frontispiece, 71 pages of text, and a 64 page catalogue of "historical, theological, juvenile, and miscellaneous" books published by Leary & Getz. 16mo. First Philadelphia edition, preceded in the United States only by editions published in New York and Boston. Like all early editions, this one is rare--WorldCat locates only 3 copies in libraries worldwide. First published in 1722, the book drew extensively on Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584) and William Vincent's Hocus Pocus Jr. The Anatomie of Legerdemain (1634) for its description of magic tricks, many of which are performed by magicians today. London and New York: Thomas Coke and Daniel Hitt, 1801. Complete in 6 volumes. Volumes 1-4, the commentary on the Old Testament, are the true first edition, printed for Thomas Coke in London 1801-1803. Volumes 5 and 6, the commentaries on the New Testament, are the first American edition, published by Daniel Hitt in New York in 1812.. Thomas Coke (1747-1814), an Anglican priest who converted to Methodism, became John Wesley's "right-hand man" in the Methodist Church. He was especially active in establishing the church in countries other than England. He was President of the Methodist Church of Ireland several times, but his most important interest was the United States to which he traveled nine times between 1784 and 1803. Coke and Francis Asbury were elected as the first superintendents of the American Methodist Church. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Unpublished, 1912. 9 1/2 " by 6 1/2" attached at top edge to larger backing board. Pencil-signed by White on the mount. Undated, but circa 1912. White was a major figure in the pictorialist movement and this portrait of the first Art Director of the Carnegie Institute is a great example of that style. Dearborn, Michigan: Unpublished, 1940. A typed agenda for a Christmas 1940 Ford Motor Company ceremony planned by Ford employee Bernard Deplanche. The agenda was personally approved by Henry Ford, who has SIGNED the agenda and written the word "Good." PROVENANCE: from the collection of longtime (1906-1958) Ford Motor Company employee Charles H. Penfield, Georgia: W. And W. C. Richards, 1842. [The title continues:] "Accompanied by Historical and Topographical Sketches, by Our Own Writers." 44 pages of text + 13 engraved plates by T. Addison Richards. First edition. 4to. The deluxe edition bound in full black leather, with gilt-stamped decoration. It has been professionally rebacked in black leather, with sympathetic gold-stamped title; new light-tan laid paper endpapers. Georgia Illustrated was the first book by landscape artist Thomas Addison Richards (1820-1900), whose topographical drawings were the basis for the steel engravings. The book was a collaboration between the artist and his brother William Carey Richards(1818-1892), who edited the essays that accompanied the illustrations. Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1728. Complete in 5 parts (various paginations) with frontispiece and 242 half-page engravings by Henri Cause, many based on those of François Chauveau. There also are attractiveengraved tailpieces following many of the fables. The 5th part of the Fables is not included in many editions; so this more complete edition is quite desirable. Recently and sympathetically rebound in full leather with the original spine and front & rear panels laid down. Internally clean with only an occasional hint of foxing; small chips out of margins of 5 leaves, not affecting text or images. In all, a very nice example of this scarce book, an early, delightfully illustrated French-language presentation of La Fontaine's fables.. Early Printing. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Boston: Adams and Nourse, 1789. Complete Collection of Adams & Nourse Printings of Massachusetts Laws, 1783-1789. Compilation of the acts passed by the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1783 through 1789. (1)-746 pages followed by 63 pages (numbered 433-495) of "Perpetual Laws." Sympathetically rebound in full brown leather. The title page carries a publication date of 1783, but the consecutive pagination suggests to me that the title page may have been inserted from another disbound book at the time this volume was rebound.. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Book.

Dublin, Ireland: P. Wogan, P. Byrne, J. Moore, and W. Jones, 1793. Frontispiece, vi, (2), 303 pages. The first printing of the Dublin edition, preceded in the same year only by the 2-volume first London edition--both preceding the first U. S. edition published in 1794. The Dublin edition is significant not only for its apparent scarcity but also for the frontispiece, an unusual mezzotint portrait of a younger Benjamin Franklin that appears in no other edition and has seldom (if ever) been reproduced. The clean and tight book has been sympathetically rebacked, retaining the original red leather title patch. All edges of the textblock were stained a pale green, perhaps when the rebacking was done--the staining intrudes 1/16" onto the top and bottom margins of the frontispiece.Very light and faint foxing throughout; occasional smudges in the margins.. Two large but light waterstains to the frontispiece but only minor and relatively unobtrusive intrusion into the image. Missing the front free… Leer más

Allen St. John.  First Edition, First Printing with 1918 on the title page (Zeuschner 598).  The fifth book in the Tarzan series.  Dark green cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front cover.  Original dust jacket with $1.35 on the spine and color illustration by St. John on the front panel. The book is clean and tight; well protected cloth covers are bright enough to appear as new, with no edgewear or rubbing; previous owner's signature on the front free endpaper; top edge of textblock is slightly dusty.  The unrestored dust jacket is generally clean and bright; light soiling of spine and rear panel; a few very short closed tears along edges; minor chipping at corners and spine extremities.  The jacket presents nicely its new Brodart mylar cover.. London: J. Johnson, 1790. Volume I: folding map, xvi, 283 pages; volume 2: viii, 408 pages. De Lesseps accompanied La Perouse on the first part of his attempted circumnavigation of the globe. After investigation of the west coast of North America, La Perouse sent de Lesseps overland to take the journals and maps of the expedition to Paris. La Perouse and his ships subsequently were lost after they left Australia, and the journals carried by de Lesseps assumed great historical significance when published. Even more scarce than those records today are de Lesseps' report of his own overland travels through the Kamtschatka peninsula. The report also includes 25 pages of vocabulary translating common English words into Russian, Kamtschadale, Koriac, Tchouktchi, and Lamont languages. Internally clean with only minor foxing, the two volumes in 3/4 leather over marbled paper covered boards have recently been sympathetically rebacked (original title and volume patches retained). New York: New Directions, 1946. 1946-1958. First printings of the first editions of all five books in the long poem to which Williams devoted so much of his later life. Each of Books I-IV were editions limited to 1,000 copies; Book V was limited to 3,000 copies. Seldom found as a complete set! The books are clean and tight, with light dusting of the top edges and some foxing along the top edge of the cloth only on Book Five. Two volumes have a previous owner's name written very neatly on a front endpaper, and one has a bookplate on the front endpaper. Pages are lightly toned (especially Book One) and more so on the endpapers. Pages edges are toned. The dust jackets for Books 1-4 are clean and attractive with some light tanning, mostly along the spines. The jacket for Book Five presents well but has moderate foxing, a couple of tiny chips, and one 1 1/4" closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel. All dust jackets are now protected in archival polyester sleeves.. First Editions.… Leer más

London: John Boydell, 1781. Two volumes rebound as one in 2 of the original gilt-tooled leather-covered boards with new leather spine upon which the 2 original leather spines have been laid down--makes for an interesting and attractive "original" binding. There are 150 copperplate engraved plates after the drawings by Paul Sandby and accompanying text. We have been able to locate only two other copies for sale at this time, and one is the 1783 reprint.  Very good condition: clean and tight, with some edgewear and rubbing of leather; pages are clean and bright watermarked laid paper with slight toning at the edges.  There is no staining on the plates--not in the images, not in the margins. Richmond: James E. Goode, 1862. Extra Session.  452 pages + appendices of 31 documents and an index of 44 pages.  There is a bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper for Lee Garnett Day, the grandson of William H. Day, member of the Virginia Senate from Isle of Wight County during the Civil War.  The earlier Day's name is listed in the roster of Senators following page 452 in this Journal.  Note: this is not the Journal for the Wheeling Extra Session (held in what was soon to become West Virginia) that is much more common.  A WorldCat searched turned up only 4 copies of the Richmond Journal; the only one in Virginia is held by The Virginia Historical Society, which also has one complete and one incomplete copy from the Confederate Memorial Literary Society.  I cannot locate any copies (other than mine) on the market at this time..
