One of the publisher Richard Griffin's idiosyncratic limited editions. This special issue not in Kerry White's continuation of Muir's bibliography. Rare by definition.

First edition. Contemporary guide to the short-lived (circa 1920s-60s) but legendary 'Shannon Rise'. Uniquely produced by Hydro-Electric Commission water flow, the prolific yearly hatch of the snowflake caddis fly in the Shannon River below the Great Lake dam at Miena was an annual and much anticipated dry-fly fishing event in Tasmania. Wigram was a regular, claiming to have 'missed only one rise' between 1927 and 1953.

Third impression in year of first publication. Early printing in exceptionally scarce 1920s dustwrapper reproducing the fabulous John Nicolson ('Nick') artwork from the first impression but not priced on spine. Banned in New Zealand in 1926 and in Australian from 1929 until 1958.

First Australian edition ‒ printed in Sydney by Angus & Robertson's Halstead Press with its colophon. A. & R. sold the English edition (with stylised wave pattern dustwrapper) locally before and after this local edition of 1000 copies was published & sold. Often mis-described as a crime novel, Mann preferred his working title 'The Disaffected', but this was changed by Angus & Robertson. Very scarce with dustwrapper.

Quarto, processed typescript, 12 leaves (printed on rectos only), original patterned apricot wrappers (unevenly faded) lettered & illustrated in gilt, clipped newspaper obituary of Deamer pasted to verso of front wrapper.One of a series of four one-act 'morality' plays by Deamer, the Sydney literary & bohemian figure of the 1920s & 30s. All four were performed on one night in July 1933 at the Tom Thumb Theatre, Sydney, requiring 'a certain amount of fortitude' from the audience, according to a reviewer.Rare.

Octavo, illustrations, limitation statement completed in manuscript by the author on title-page, original green cloth with exceptionally bright pictorial dustwrapper (with loosely inserted 1961 N.S.W. Rod Fishers' Society circular, at which time Hedge was its secretary).
First edition ‒ issue limited to 500 copies (but fewer than this were actually numbered and signed by Hedge), distributed first to members of the Rod Fishers' Society. This copy number 15, additionally inscribed by Hedge. (1000 copies of the first edition without the limitation statement on the title-page were also printed.)

Roughley and striking Percy Trompf cover illustration.Roughley, a zoologist, and author of numerous technical and commercial studies of Australian fish &c., was a member of the Great Barrier Reef Game Fish Angling Club and helped form the Game Fishing Association of Australia in 1937 but did not fish himself!

Well and truly out of print, this edition was the 'first of the Endeavour Press Australian Classic Reprints', selling about 800 copies in the first six months. Rejected by the a number of publishers, Jonah, Stone's Sydney larrikin novel, was first published by Methuen in 1911, but distributed by Angus & Robertson in Australia.

Redheap was banned in Australia in 1930, and Every Mother's Son was declared a prohibited import in the following year. The offending or suggestive passages identified include pp. 103-9, 244-7, 257-60, 312-24, 328-30, and 333-37 (US edition).

An extensive review in the Truth (Sydney) concluded: '"Miracles by Arrangement" should be treated by the censor in the same way as "Redheap." It must be banned. Better still if it could be banned overseas, where it cannot but help give the outside world a wrong impression—a perverted impression—of Australia and Australians.'

Rare early collection of Devanny's short stories ‒ published after her banned novel The Butcher Shop (1926). A reviewer claimed that 'I had to stop reading them in sheer disgust. What do the publishers mean by boosting this slimy sex stuff…?
