1918. Good. The original armistice telegram announcing the end of WWI hostilities: 11 November 1918. A single leaf measuring: 230mm x 130mm. Showing in the upper right corner is the official Army Telegraph date-stamp: 11.XI.18. Typically, there are a couple of closed splits along the folds, and there's the usual age toning and few edge chips; nonetheless it's still complete and in very decent shape. The full message reads: Hostilities will cease at 1100 to-day November 11th AAA Troops will stand fast on the line reached at that hour which will be reported by wire to adv. G.H.Q. AAA Defensive precautions will be maintained AAA There will be no intercourse of any description with the enemy until receipt of instructions from G.H.Q. AAA Further instructions follow AAA Acknowledge AAA Addressed All Directors. Thus a good copy of a highly important military communication, a landmark message of immense historical significance.

Circa: 1964. First Edition. Very Good. A 1960's fanzine with a Rolling Stones centre-spread, signed in blue ballpoint pen by all five of the inaugural band members, including the founding member and original leader: Brian Jones [1942-1969], together with Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards. A very presentable and authentic set of the Stones signatures, still stapled in the fanzine, thus unmounted and ready for appropriate framing and display. Note: this centre-spread shows Brian Jones heading the band, positioned very centrally with the other four band members around him, two either side. Very scarce.

Tientsin-Peiping: The Peiyang Press, Ltd, 1936. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good. A rare, genuine and very scarce first edition of this highly decorative Beijing map. Thus it shows the German legation depicted by the original 1926-1933 black/white/red striped Weimar flag, whereas subsequent printings replace this with the later Swastika flag. Complete with Explanatory Booklet, which has had the spine skilfully repaired, and so showing well, clean and tidy with no pen-marks. Booklet dimensions: 180mm x 130mm; 23 pages. The map itself is in very good condition, completely unrestored. Hence there are about five small partings along the upper folds, measuring between 2cm-5cm. As such they are easily closed. The colours, print and paper are as good as it gets: very bright and clear. Privately Printed John Johnson by the Oxford University Press, 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A complete four volume folio set bound in original quarter dark red morocco and printed on hand-made paper. Collation: pp. xii,[iv],145,[3]; xiv,[ii],263,[1], complete with coloured frontispieces and 201 plates. Firm, square and tight, just mildly rubbed. Contents fresh, clean and secure, showing a small publisher's label at the pastedown. No stamps, no shelf marks, no stickers, no inscriptions. Thus a pleasing set of books in better than very good condition. Scarce.

B29. D15.10. Very Good. Original WWI pigeon service communication sent from Pechine, France. The message is transcribed in manuscript pencil, as follows: "Have formed a strong point in Pechine 100yds each side of B29. D15.10. Surrounded by Boch [sic] but still holding on. The Boche first waves have broken through in three places. Will hold on till last man." It is signed R.J. Ridley Capt and is sent from LM to PPB by 1710-1425 Pigeon Service. Measures: 185mm x 95mm. Affixed to an old piece of notepaper by two rusted pins. Condition is very good indeed, no tears, just age toned and slightly darkened. A unique and very scarce item.

A seemingly full run from 1965 through to 1974 now uniformly bound into ten volumes with dark green hardback bindings, all of which are showing well: tight and square, strong joints, no splits or snags. Contents clean and fresh; no pen-marks. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Each volume measures: 285mm x 210mm (total width on the shelf: 420mm). Fully illustrated. A heavy set of books in presentable condition. Note: a few individual copies are obtainable here and there but lengthy runs such as this are very scarce.

Publisher's dark green hardback with gilt lettered spine: in excellent order, fresh and bright, sharp corners, no bumps, firm and square, looks very smart indeed. Complete with original non-price clipped dustjacket, which is showing well, no tears, no chips, no creases. Contents crisp, clean and tight: no pen-marks and not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Size: 193mm x 127mm; collation: pp. viii, 91, [1, (blank)], 4 plates and 12 figures. Thus a fine copy, very nice, probably the best available of its kind.

Contents tight and clean. No pen-marks, no worming, just some very mild age toning and occasional browning. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Collation: pp. [44], 345, [89], 81-133, [1], complete with 43 engravings as per book list, illustrating equipment, procedures and assorted workers in contemporary English costume, (lacks portrait frontis?). Rubbed and darkened, nonetheless firm with strong joints. Contents sound and clean, just a slightly age toned. No pen-marks save an old former name to the upper corner of the front blank. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Size: 285mm x 205mm. Collation: pp. xi, 158 and 21 hand finished plates (heightened with Arabic gum) by Keulemans, a frontispiece, 22 other photogravure plates, and a coloured map. Thus a very good copy. Scarce.

Six volumes uniformly bound in the publisher's half-leather bindings; each volume numbered 11 (from a limited edition of 500). Comprises: The Ornithology of Australia [3 Volumes], reproducing faithfully without alteration or correction the 21-part edition originally published between 1866-1870 by Pugh, Brisbane; collation: Vol. I, pp. x, 142; Vol. II, pp. x, 142; Vol. III, pp. x, 142; in total 126 full-page colour prints. Together with: The Birds of Australia [3 volumes], reproducing faithfully without alteration or correction the original 1910-1927 edition published by Witherby & Co., London; collation: Vol. I, unpaginated [pp. x, 182]; Vol. II, [pp. x, 182]; Vol III, [pp. x, 182]; in total 105 full-page colour plates. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels, and not showing any pen-marks or any other signs of ownership. Thus a tidy set of books in very presentable, nearly new condition.

London: Printed for Samuel Smith at the Prince's Arms, 1684/5. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Contemporary full leather hardback rebacked with a matching spine preserving original endpapers. Corners and extremities worn, upper and lower covers rubbed, nonetheless firm and square with strong joints and showing well. Contents sound and clean: just a minor marginal closed tear with small loss to the lower outer corner of D3, very mildly age toned throughout, and an old former owner bookplate to the pastedown. Size: 170mm x 110mm. Collation: pp. [18], 112, [14 (addendum & 6 advert leaves)], lacks final blank leaf. Thus a very good copy. Starts at Number 1 published September 1928 through to Number 18 published December 1929. Large body of work: more than 1300 pages. Fully illustrated. Includes numerous full page adverts for cars etc. Assorted contributors: Benito Mussolini, Arnold Bennet, Hilaire Belloc, E.F. Benson, etc. Thus a very scarce publication.

London: Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Publisher's red hardback in very good condition: square with firm joints, no splits, just mildly rubbed. Complete with original dustjacket, which is chipped and darkened, and now preserved after being remounted on stiff white card paper. Contents essentially clean and tight, no pen-marks. And not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Size: 8vo (185mm x 125mm); pages: 62, with a frontispiece plate of Baird and eleven additional illustrative plates. Note: this work is nearly always seen in stiff card covers whereas this first edition is bound in a hardcover. As such it is very rare, probably one of a very small number of specially produced de-luxe first editions. Thus a very good copy of a fragile work offered for sale a reasonable price.

Bound with: The Second Part of the Address to the Free-men and Free-holders of the Nation (Printed by A. Goodbid and J. Playford for George Walk, London, 1682; First Edition). Also bound with: The Third and Last Part of the Address to the Free-men and Free-holders of the Nation (Printed for George Wells, London, 1683; First Edition). Size: Quarto (195mm x 155mm). Collation (1st Part): pp. [4], xi, [1], 66, [2]; (2nd Part): pp. [2], xxv, [1], 90, [2]; (3rd Part): pp. [4], xxii, 138 (possibly lacks a preliminary advertisement). Contents clean and tidy, just a very old name showing at the endpaper (T. de Grey), a couple of old shelf marks and a very minor inscription at the blank fly-leaves. No stamps, no labels. Thus a scarce book in better than very good condition.

Antwerp , Circa 1579. Very Good. Copper engraved map, coloured by hand, central fold, Latin text on verso. Sheet size: 16 1/4" x 21 1/8" (413mm x 537mm). Condition: Just some neat reinforcing to slight central fold parting otherwise very good. A highly significant map, one of the cornerstone maps of Africa. Shows the supposed central African kingdom of the Christian priest-king Prester John. Who, according to legend, stood as the main defence against the forces of barbarism. The origin of the Nile is shown as being the mythical twin lakes of Zaire and Zaflan, the source of which as the Mountains of the Moon. The decorative elements include two pairs of large elephants, sea monsters and a dhow. Two large strapworks contain the title and the text of the legend. Priest John is a mythical king with a long cartographical history, who was supposed to provide a stronghold against the Barbarians, and to be an ally for crusaders. Two volume set uniformly bound in contemporary blind-tooled full vellum, titles inked to spines, edges sprinkled red; slightly darkened, but nonetheless in very good shape, with no cracks, no snags, no splits. Size: Folio (320mm x 210mm); collation: pp. [viii] 683 [i]; [ii] 687-1388 178 [x] + 1 folding plate. Half-title to each volume. Vol. I. includes an engraved title and engraved frontispiece with Amsterdam coat of arms; woodcut initials, parallel Greek and Latin texts. Fold-out plate of coins before p.1027 in vol. II. Note: the first page of text in each volume has a small portion of its margin excised, seemingly to remove ms. Occasional faint staining to fore-edge margins, a few wax spots, upper half of r.f.e.p. excised. Thus a very presentable set of books.

Contents clean and tight. No pen-marks. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Just a small trace of a tiny former owner bookplate at the pastedown. Size: 35cm x 25cm x 7cm. Collation: pp. (2), xiii, 624; complete with 19 tipped-in fine colour plates by G. Lodge, R. Thorburn, and D. M. Reid-Henry, and 9 tipped-in black-and-white photographic plates, also 53 text-figures and 36 maps (1 of which is tinted and folding). Note: this is the De Luxe Limited Edition, of which just 295 copies were printed. This is number 28. As such, a very presentable book, handsomely bound and showing well.

Publisher's original green hardback: rubbed, worn and darkened; also showing a small faded paper label; nonetheless holding well, firm and square with no splits. Contents tight and clean; no pen-marks, just an heraldic Royal Veterinary College stamp at the title-page. Size: 230mm x 140mm; collation: pp. viii, 192, [1, advert]. Seems to be a very early work concerning viruses, i.e. contagium vivum theory, and is very possibly the first work of its kind in English. Hardly any such copies showing with the institutional libraries. Thus a significant and very scarce work in very good condition.
