Printed by the Royal Publishing House. 1 vol. in-4, 8vo (imperial) 159 pp. 20th century binding in glazed blonde leather on spine and corners, with marbling, spine gilt title on black leather with engraved jewels. In exceptional condition with very few minor spots. In French and Latin. A wonderful rare book with stunning fold-outs of smelting, casting and other techniques for making anchors, beautifully bound, a real treasure.

James Cowles Prichard, MD FRS (1786-1848) was a British physician and ethnologist with interests in physical anthropology and psychiatry. He was also an early proponent of the physical history and evolution of mankind. He coined the term "senile dementia" when he served as a medical commission in lunacy from 1845. Always fascinated by the origin of human varieties and races, as a Quaker by religion this fitted in with his belief system.
He took his MD at Edinburgh, and also read at Trinity College, Cambridge. There he became a member of the Church of England.
By 1845 he was made a commissioner in Lunacy in London, he died of rheumatic fever there three years later. At the time of his death he was president of the Ethnological Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society. Pritchard has been described by science historian Conway Zirkle as an evolutionary thinker who came very close "to explaining the origin of new forms through the operation of natural selection although he never actually stated… Leer más

Light brown buckram with gilt art deco style Egyptian temple design on front cover with blue highlights. Gilt Horus on spine with title. Berkelouw Books Label inside front cover. In very fine bright condition through-out. All tissues intact with colour illustrations and stunning b & w photos of the monuments including inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) taken in the ascending chamber or Great Hall. In all one of the most stunning and evocative books of the pre-WWI period, rare.

Baedeker, Karl. Palastina und Syrien: die Hauptrouten Mesopotamien und Babyloniens und die Insel Cypern. Handbuch fur Reisend. Siebente Auflag. Leipzig: 1910, 8vo, 432pp, 39 plates, of which most are in colour, some folding or double sided, with additional maps and plans included in pagination to make up the 21 "Karen" and 56 "Plane und Grundriss" stated. Original limp red cloth boards, blocked with blind rules, spine and front board lettered direct in gilt, marbled edges. Some wear to extremities, particularly to bottom of front corner of spine, some marks and small puncture to front board.
The seventh and final German language edition of Baedeker's guide to the region which changed greatly in WWI, and the years immediately following.

Ex libris of Nathan Comfort Starr an American poet and author. (1896-1981). Beautiful etching of Juvenal op title page which is in red and black text, 15 etchings throughout. In all a lovely book with nice association.

This book was translated from French by Warren R Dawson and is an early just pre the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. One can imagine it was rushed to press in English to take advantage of the fever pitch of interest in Ancient Egypt in the 1920's.
Well illustrated and bringing up sites and art that is not generally talked about even today, with references to Borchardt, Petrie, Gardiner, Quibel ect this well researched book is both interesting and a delight to own.
Will only become more valuable.

Bookplate of A. Norman Carter with artistic rendering of a cosy library. This copy is in English with no original Latin.
This edition is a reissue of Robert Triphook's London edition of 1822, translated by the Neoplatonist Thomas Taylor. Four-page supplement "Passages Suppressed" bound at rear. Limited re-issue of 600 copies. This copy is unnumbered. In all a really charming copy and reasonably priced for such a lovely volume.
