Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1990. 1st edition, 8vo, 373pp, publisher's laminated boards, previous owner's neat name ffep, VG+ Copy, no DJ as issued; a pencilled note is included on the ffep under the previous owner's name; the note reads: From the publishers, April 1990 (Winifred Wood wife of Sir Alan Muir Wood) The recipient, the previous owner, was himself heavily involved in various applications in Applied Mathematics and taught in several universities in the North. This seems likely to have been a complimentary copy sent out by OUP at the request of Mrs Wood, Sir Allan Muir Wood having received an acknowledgement from W L Wood in the preface for assistance given.. London: John Murray, 1850. 5th edition in 2 volumes, 8vo, 399pp, 495pp, engraved frontis to each volume, further plates and textual line illustrations throughout; original red cloth lettered and illustrated black; all plates present as called for, plus fold-out map at rear which is of course a little torn; covers generally somewhat rubbed and age-darkened with some nicks about spine extrems; binding a little sprung but that said this is not a badly-preserved example of this classic of travel and exploration; essentially G Copy. 5th Edition. London: George Allan, 1899. 1st edition, large 4to, 487pp, photo illustrations; brown cloth with bevelled edges; previous owner's book plate to the front pastedown, a minor production fault has resulted in the paper having rucked up around a binding tape and glued itself to the pastedown and which has subsequently sheared away - difficult to described this, nothing much, just a short tear in the gutter of the first few pages; foxing to endpapers, and cloth has generally faded and age-tanned particularly at the spine, mild wear to corners; by and large though this is a decent survivor with top edge gilt and rough-cut edges elsewhere, certainly Good, approaching VG Copy; subscribers' list at the rear. London: A & C Black, 1909. 1st edition, large 8vo, 283pp + ads, 70 full page colour plates from Molyneux, patterned wine-coloured boards; decorations to fr board and spine; now this is not a perfect copy by any means but it is complete and respectable, a previous owner has glue a thin piece of reinforcing paper down the front paper gutter, his name and address to fr pastedown, rear paper hinge cracked; the cloth of both upper and lower spine hinges is rubbed and tender with some wear, the spine extrems show noticeable wear and repair with a short half inch closed split but without any significant loss; the plates collate all present, the map, although mis-folded of course - is sound; overall not bad for a tough cookie and this is a tough cookie, not really any better than Good Copy however, no DJ. Mulhouse: Editions Braun, 1951. 1st edition in soft cover format, 4to, unpaginated, photo reproductions; this was the first monography on the man who came to be known as the father of modern Egyptian Modern Art and most scarce; text entirely in French; card covers a little frayed at spine extrems; cream over-cover was probably not a good idea and both upper and lower panels have picked up coffee splashes, North African dust and various other inexplicable marks; by and large though for 70+ years not a bad survivor of a very tricky item, G/VG Copy.
