Descripción:
Kathleen Tankersley Young is one of the great ghosts of modernist literature, a poet and editor thoroughly engrossed in the most exciting stylistic currents of the time, influential in shaping publications and poets alike, and yet almost entirely forgotten after her tragic death in 1933, just shy of her thirtieth birthday. This volume offers the first comprehensive volume of her poetry and short fiction, including all three of the books she published during her lifetime—Ten Poems, The Dark Land, and The Pepper Trees—along with the vast majority of her published works, recovered from magazines large and small, and a selection of nearly forty previously unpublished works. Edited by Erik La Prade and Joshua Rothes, this volume seeks to reintroduce Young as an indispensable poet of mid-period American modernism.
Kathleen Tankersley Young (August 15, 1902–April 9, 1933) was born and raised in rural west Texas. She attended school sparsely, and there is no record of her completing high… Leer más

-----------
"In a text born of procedural invention, each word is a making and simultaneously an unmaking. Strangely, almost like a ghost, the power of metaphor reigns. You will feel yourself inside the poems, shifting and shifted [. . .] as much poetry as it is wisdom: 'It is easy to moralize from rooftops, but what about the fields.'"—Sally Keith
A computational mistranslation of mid-twentieth century Fascist architectural writing, Rationalism engages how fascist principles, long-since published, reverberate in similar expressions of contemporary rhetoric, investigating figurative and physical constructs as mechanisms of isolation and containment built into language. Intentionally "ruining" these structures, Rationalism sifts through the debris to understand the materials from which they are built and who builds them.

Descripción:
By turns allegorical, visionary, and satirical, The City of Dreadful Night and Other Writings combines Thomson's poetic magnum opus with selections from his poetry and belletristic prose pieces, written for The Secular Review, National Reformer, and Cope's Tobacco Plant
in the 1860s and 70s. Harrowing and musical in its nightmarish visions like "Insomnia" and in the title poem, wryly comic and philosophical in his prose essays, here is an unheralded voice of a Victorian generation, which came of age with the publicization of Darwin's findings, and saw humanity definitively condemned to a godless globe.
"It is long since I have been so interested in a volume as in that of the Essays and Phantasies… The motions of his mind in the best of the essays are utterly untrammeled and independent, and yet falling naturally into grace and poetry." — Herman Melville
James Thomson, penname "B. V." (23 November 1834 – 3 June 1882) was a Scottish writer of visionary verse and belletristic prose, and a… Leer más

Descripción:
"I died on the twelfth of September, at the height of happiness. Clothed in the shadow of the chestnut tree outside the house, my body preserved the posture of a living woman hours after my last breath. Whereas at first I struggled with snakes under my tongue, around my ankles and my wrists, snakes clotting the blood under the skin of my lips and rearranging my limbs to fit the encasement of this new reality, I now watch lavender clouds pass by."
Christina Tudor-Sideri's debut novel is a book told in a single breath—a final breath. In the moments following her death, a nameless woman recounts, in fragments and flashes, episodes from a life that seems increasingly alien and distant to her. As her body is slowly erased by wind, water, and the earth beneath it, her voice carries on without ceasing, as if any pause would mean permanent silence. Because these are the very stakes.
Christina Tudor-Sideri is a writer and translator. She is the author of the book-length essay Under the Sign of the… Leer más

Descripción:
It has often been a source of much annoyance to me that to every preface I write I am obliged to append a book—like the endorsement on a bill of exchange—or an appendix to letters A to Z. Many a man who dabbles in authorship by way of amusement has his books sent to him all ready written and complete, straight from the cradle; so that all he has to do is to attach his gold frontlets of prefaces to their foreheads—which is nothing but painting the corona about the sun. As yet, however, not a single author has applied to me for a preamble to a book, although for several years I have had a considerable number of prefaces by me (all ready beforehand, and going at great bargains), in which I extol to the best of my ability works which have not as yet come in to being. An original collection of prefaces spanning the entire career of Jean Paul, the great German master of metaphors. The all-star team of translators includes David Dollenmayer, Genese Grill, Ellen Yutzy Glebe, Noah Harley, Daniel… Leer más

Descripción:
"My whole being, my collapse, and my agony are a white and weary anguish until death, which will overtake me soon. Moment after moment, I expect to hear beyond silence, shredded and dotted by vertiginous distance, a remote crackling."
As he neared the end of his troubled life, Horacio Quiroga penned a collection of stories that straddle thresholds, the ones between life and death, between sanity and madness, between man and nature. Partly set in the labyrinthine Misiones Jungle and haunted by the suicides of his stepfather, wife, and both his children, the otherworldly grace and human tenderness of these stories juxtapose a violently direct prose. Translated for the first time into English, Beyond (El más allá, 1935) brings readers tantalizingly near to the abysses that lurk just on the other side of everyday experience. Includes: "Beyond", "The Vampire", "The Flies", "The Express Train Conductor", "The Call", "The Son", "His Absence", "Beauty and the Beast", "Lady Lioness", "The… Leer más

Descripción:
In early twentieth century Spain, the dominant literary currents of the day were divided between a push for a spartan, utilitarian prose and a retreat to the well-worn stylings of "old masters". But there was an intrepid group of writers, artists, and thinkers concerned with a new linguistic vitality, incorporating the latest scientific knowledge while rising above mere functionalism. Taking his cues from Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Charlie Chaplin, and his mentor, José Ortega y Gasset, Benjamín Jarnés distilled these ideas into a series of short prose pieces dubbed Exercises (Ejercicios, 1927), in which he advocated for a language rife with"metaphorical fireworks", a prose that eschews what we might call today "craft" for a fecundity of descriptive flourishes, logical leaps (that don't always connect), and a brash disregard for all schools and techniques.
Benjamín Jarnés (1888–1949) was among the foremost avant-garde writers of early twentieth century Spain. As a young man, he… Leer más

Descripción:
"The sound of footsteps crunching on the gravel, just barely perceptible, woke my mother in the middle of the night. Someone was walking through the courtyard, straight towards her room. But maybe it was coming from the basement. She'd been asleep with the windows open and the shutters closed. She got up, pushed open one of the shutters and waited, standing there, facing the darkness."
Madame Rebernak, a single mother, is horrified to learn that her husband's cousin Freddy, who was sent to prison fifteen years prior for sexually abusing a young girl, has just been released. Not only that, but he's living across the street from her, her son, and her beautiful teenage daughter, Clémence. Increasingly concerned that something terrible will befall Clémence, she is painted by the men around her as paranoid and delusional. But what at first seems delusional turns out to be simply inevitable.
Told in stark, unsparing language, A Friend of the Family is a gripping freefall through intuition and… Leer más

Descripción:
Translated into English for the first time, the collected poems of Max Blecher—the lone volume of poetry published in his lifetime, Transparent Body, along with verse published in periodicals and posthumously—add important color to Blecher's body of work, most clearly displaying his early surrealist tendencies, as well as illustrating key moments in his prose works, as readers will find allusions and callbacks to his three novels. This volume is bilingual, with the original Romanian on the facing pages.
Max Blecher (September, 8 1909 – May, 31 1938) was a Romanian writer. While studying medicine in Paris, Blecher was diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis, a disease which kept him confined to hospitals and sanatoria for the remaining decade of his life. In spite of this, he produced a considerable amount of literature—including the novels Adventures in Immediate Unreality, Scarred Hearts, and the posthumously published The Lighted Burrow: A Sanatorium Journal—as well as keeping up… Leer más
