Sowerby’s 2592 hand-coloured plates, each facing its descriptive text, and followed by a blank opening. The plates are almost all clean and bright. Where some text pages are foxed, this is generally light and unintrusive. An enormous number of plants received their first formal publication within this great work; those displayed include trees, lichens, and seaweeds. There is some browning to the front pastedowns, which bear the armorial bookplate of Joseph Ashby Partridge. The first volume has Sowerby's 2-page Preface to the whole work, and a dedication leaf. Each volume has its title page, and ends with the three indeces to its contents - Alphabetical, Systematical, and the Index of English Names. Paris:: Galerie Claude Bernard,, 1977.. Softcover. Very Good+. Unpaginated softcover exhibition catalogue, 29x21.5cms. With Leiris' 9-page essay 'Le Grand Jeu de Francis Bacon', and with superb illustrations of the paintings, including 3 large foldouts of triptychs. Title page signed by Bacon in blue marker 'Francis Bacon 19/1/77/-'. There is also a curious illustrated gift inscription in another hand to the first blank leaf, just three days later, dated 'Jan. 22, 1977', and signed 'T.B.', giver and recipient apparently having some connection with Bacon's world. Internally about fine, with a slight waviness to a small patch at the top edge of some pages adjacent to the spine. The triptych illustrated on the covers and front flap is the one sold to Roman Abramovich for $86m in 2008, the second highest price ever paid for a Bacon. Very Good+. c.8,000 pp in all, printed in double column, with maps and perhaps 1000 plates. Contents of first seven vols in very fresh good order, with mostly slight foxing affecting title pages and some plates; the last three vols are still very good, but have more foxing, with some browning to the text pages, and the last vol also has a top edge stain to some pages and a tide stain to some plates. Dipping into the first volume, much space is devoted to Anatomy (80pp + 24 plates), Astronomy, Architecture, America (60pp and 2 maps), Arabia (40pp, no plates), Agriculture (40pp), and Arithmetic (30pp); and the many hundreds of shorter articles include Africa (a good map, but only 3pp of text), and a little on Angels, recording a consensus view that they were included in the work of the first of the six days of Creation. 1858 ownership name in pencil to front free… Leer más

Original brown endpapers with armorial bookplate dated 1901, and 1944 ownership name to verso of front free endpaper. 'Note added in Press' tipped in at Preface. Foxing to prelims and to untrimmed fore-edges. Contents otherwise clean, with occasional minor spotting. Top edge gilt. In the original binding of red pebble cloth titled in gilt, decorated with a small gilt lighthouse to front. Clean and firm, front bright, spine slightly dulled. Small nick to head of spine, and slight blunting to extremities. A very nice copy. [Heavy Item]

Presumed first and only edition.. Hardcover. Very Good. *** A conundrum *** (see below). Unpaginated: illustrated. OT & Apocrypha: [iv], [916]; NT: [213], [3]; plus a frontis and 49 other engravings. Some browning and offsetting to title page, there are a few patches of foxing (viz Chronicles 2, and a few of the plates), with occasional minor spotting elsewhere, and there is some offsetting from the illustrations to the New Testament. Three of the final leaves have damaged edges, now repaired, but losing a little text. Pages perhaps slightly toned, but contents otherwise clean and in very good order. Although many of the plates have integral titles in English, the engravers, where given (no artists' names present) all appear to be French, except in the NT. Fine/poor. 28pp. Copy #72 of the 200 copies signed by Eliot which were printed for Great Britain, a further 400 being printed for the Fountain Press in America. 20.5x15cms, in the original binding of blue cloth, titled and decorated in gilt. With its glassine dust jacket with plain paper ends to retain the flaps: this is slightly wrinkled, has small closed tears at the spine head, and a small tear with loss to the spine foot, which have resulted in some very slight fading to the spine ends, as can be discerned in the photograph. The book itself is fine and bright throughout, though with some toning to the inner portion of the free endpapers which had not been in contact with the flaps of the jacket. It has been kept in its battered and split, and presumably original, tan slip-case, which has protected it well. Unusual to have the jacket and case still present, however the 90+ years… Leer más

[vi], 352pp, with the six maps (one folding) and a frontis portrait photograph of General Roberts; [40], 274pp: the biographies preceded by 140 oval woodburytype portrait photographs mounted on 10 page-openings. Contents of both volumes very clean, a few pages having slight spotting to the edges. In the Historical volume, the edge of the frontis has been made good, and the single-page maps have some foxing to the edges; and in the Biographical volume there is a lightly-pencilled military ownership name to the half-title, and some foxing at the first text page. Large quarto, all edges gilt, in the original bindings of green cloth over bevelled boards, titled in gilt, rebacked in the mid-20thC. A firm, bright, and very handsome set. [EXTRA Heavy Item]

The poem, 'The Mind of the Front' is present and precedes the frontis and title page, which are followed by the Preface xxxii, and the Contents 24pp. // Then follows 'The Life of the Valiant and Noble Sir Walter Raleigh, Knight. With his Tryal at Winchester'; printed for George Dawes et al, Third Edition, 1687, and consisting of the portrait frontis, the title page, and the 41pp of text. // These are followed by the 813pp of the main work; [2]pp 'To the Reader'; [26]pp Chronological Table; and [16]pp Alphabetical Table of Contents. This volume, mighty as it is, written while Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London, 'using a wide array of sources in six languages' (Wikipedia), and first published in 1614, takes us up only to the Roman era: it was conceived as being but the 'First Part' - another two projected volumes were never written. // Included in the main work are 2 genealogical… Leer más

Endpapers browned, and bearing the early ownership name of J.K.[H?] Hichens [of Beech Grove, Sunninghill, Berks] in each volume. Foxing to titles and to a few other pages, but contents otherwise very fresh. Edges sprinkled. Octavo, in contemporary half red leather, spine ruled and titled in gilt, marbled boards rubbed. Spines refurbished. Novel famous for its pseudonymous celebration of the author's recent youthful friendship with Oscar Wilde, reciprocated the following year by Wilde's dedication of his early poem 'Ravenna' to the present author. A very nice set.

All vols are clean and unmarked internally, bindings firm and clean. A few jackets are sunned, and three have small closed tears. All volumes are first UK printings except the Companion Volume V Part 3, which is the 1983 first US printing. The stunning record of an astonishing life. A worthy set, comprising the main titles (complete) and the first 13 companion volumes. [Since 1993, five further companion volumes have been published, covering the war years up to August 1943, and the series is still far from being completed.] [EXTRA Heavy Item]

Contents very clean. Extensive contemporary notes at ends. '2' (ie - 2nd part) inked in an early hand to closed fore-edge. Quarto, 31x20cms, in contemporary full calf with raised bands, borders and compartments ruled. Firm, label gone, corners bumped, has had a little discreet professional refurbishment to head of spine. London:: Smith, Elder and Co,, 1866.. First edition.. Hardcover. VG+. [iv], 336 +10 plates; [iv], 332 +8 plates. No half-titles. A beautiful set newly recased using the ORIGINAL CLOTH, which an early owner had foresightfully saved and conserved, having the panels and spines bound into the backs of the leather bindings which he had commissioned, but which are now discarded. Contents generally very fresh and clean, appearing unread, although the first volume has some light indications of former damp: namely, a faint stain to the bottom edge of the title page, faint tide stains to the bottom margins of the plates, a 3mm tidestain to the outer margin of perhaps half a dozen pages, a faint pinkish tinge to the last three pages, and faint cockling to the lower part of the pages throughout. I would emphasise that these effects are slight, and would have been passed over were it not otherwise such a fine copy. London:: Thomas Bosworth,, 1854.. Hardcover. VG. [vi], 54pp, plus the 12 guarded plates. Each chromolithograph is followed by poems by various authors celebrating the species depicted. In intensely coloured roundels of about 6cms diameter, within a gilt circle, Wolf's illustrations vividly depict birds in their natural setting. Set within a wreath of gilt foliage, they are quite small on the page, but looked at closely, each is an exquisite porthole into the avian world. The page surface is, in some cases, slightly soiled: and a few of the plate pages are afflicted with the foxing often associated with this title, affecting chiefly the reverse, blank, side: most notably, the frontis (the House Sparrow), and to a lesser extent the Woodpecker and the Wagtail plates. The text pages are generally clean, with a few mild soil marks. Original cream endpapers, repaired to the gutter, with an armorial bookplate to the pastedown. All edges gilt. Published on the occasion of an exhibition held at The Fine Art Society Contemporary, London, 4 October-2 November 2013. Contents fresh and unmarked: (light 1cm smudge to white of p.143). Some of the high gloss pages adhere to each other slightly and may require a gentle peeling apart to open, a momentary operation: all checked opening ok with no surface damage. 30.5x24.5cms, in the black pictorial boards. Fine and bright, with minimal signs of handling - slight compression at foot of spine, an inch of slight ridging to the edge of one board, and a few faint pressure lines visible when they catch the light. Quarto, 32x21cms, all edges pink, in contemporary black half calf bindings with pebble cloth boards, the spines gilt ruled and titled. Firm, bright and clean, with a little mottling. Very Good. xii, 435pp, [2]; with, as called for, the 9 foldout maps, 12 plates of views and costumes, and 4 plates on the construction of maps. Two of the costume plates have benefited from a little careful watercolouring. With foxing to the plates and maps, and occasional toning to the text, but no physical damage to the pages, maps or plates. The front free endpaper bears a roughly-stamped crest of plumes with the name 'Francis Dugdale Astley' (1805-1873), who later inherited the baronetcy of Everley - presumably the book's first owner. The author has attempted to bring together the disparate facts of geography, which he found so poorly presented in other such works, into a more congenial and intelligible whole, incorporating characterisations of the various peoples, and much history. Endpapers slightly tanned, rear pastedown bubbling slightly, and small (5x1.5cm) brown stain to edge of rear endpaper, the adjacent page slightly affected. No names or marking. Top edge gilt. 31.5x21.5cms, large quarto, in the original binding of white/cream buckram, decorated in gilt. Upper board and spine are bright, lower board less so, and the gilt scarab is rubbed. Spine cloth uneven (bubbling): there is also some bubbling along the lower joint, and a very little to the upper board. Corners all good, foot of spine slightly puckered. A beautiful, firm copy. Pages in very good order, tanned at the edges. 12mo, c.14.3x8.8cms, in the early or original blind-ruled brown calf boards, with a new blind-ruled brown calf spine with off-white endpapers. A very nice and complete copy. *[The unpaginated prelims consist of (ii) imprimatur, (iii) engraved title, (v) title, (vii-xi) Mosley's dedication, (xii-xiv) To the Living and Posterity/ to the Reader. i, iv, & vi are blanks.]

Firm, in the original binding of smooth crimson cloth, spine titled in gilt. Boards bright, corners sharp, spine a little dulled, ends puckered, negligible soiling. A very nice copy of the first printing of her notorious novel.

[xiv], 576, [13]; with additional engraved title, a portrait, and 74 anatomical plates (all called for), of which 6 are folding. Latin text. Professional tissue repairs to top edges of first five leaves, and to some of the foldout plates. Superb plates, and contents overall very good, with minor toning or soiling to the margins, and, in some cases, a small tide stain. In recent quarter calf, spine titled and ruled in gilt, with marbled boards with corners of vellum. A beautiful copy.
