The second Guninger edition, adorned with detailed woodcuts. An extremely scarce work. In the original Latin. Collated, complete, with all 178 leaves. Retaining the original blanks. This is the second Gruninger edition. The first Gruninger edition was printed in 1496, and was the second illustrated edition of Terence, following Trechsel's edition of 1493. This was one of three classical texts printed by Gruninger, and was the first. He followed with Horace's 'Opera' and Virgil's 'Aeneid'. With the signatures: [a]6, b-c8, d-z6, A-F6.  Quire K is misbound, but all leaves are present. Terence's comedies were performed for the first time around 170-160BC.  Gruninger innovatively used interchangeable panels for his woodcuts, and each play to this work has a full page pictorial 'Dramatis Personae'.  In a full vellum binding. Dubbed the 'Bright Young Things', the British tabloids fed on the doings of these prominent socialites, of which Waugh was one of. Dibdin notes this Bible as 'the most magnificent' of the Oxford Bibles. A handsome edition, with this set bound in a binding with George III's monogram to the boards. The first edition of the 'Vinegar Bible' which is known as such due to the erroneous 'The parable of the vinegar' instead of 'vineyard' above Luke XX (the verso of G6) to the New Testament. This variant has the 1717 imprint to the Old Testament and the 1716 imprint to the New Testament. Printed by John Baskett, who was the King's printer. Baskett held a reputation for purchasing competing Bible printing business and absorbing them into his own. A scarce survival, including unpublished book typescripts. From the library of John Gadd, whose name plate is to all volumes. Gadd has written an introductory excerpt to the front pastedown of the clamshell box containing the letters. In it he explains how he came to acquire this large selection of letters in March 1981 after visiting Fred Tebbutt in order to get some background detail on T.C Lethbridge and extra-sensory perception. Lethbridge argued rays of energy are transmitted from every object, and that they can be detected using pendulum dowsing. Lethbridge had taught Tebbutt how to dowse and he demonstrated this to a sceptical Gadd. This was the most extensive nineteenth century work on the subject and is beautifully illustrated throughout. The most extensive work on Native Americans published in the 19th-century containing "a vast mass of really valuable information" (Field). This title was commissioned by the US Congress. This set has an excellent association. All volumes belonged to Buckingham Smith. Buckingham Smith was a diplomat and historian of Spanish exploration in Florida and the Americas. Schoolcraft acknowledges his use of Smith's transcripts of documents held in the Archivo-General in volume III. Smith made these transcripts during his posting as secretary of legation in 1850-2. Signed by the author, this is a beautifully bound copy of this beloved tale. 'Mary Poppins' first appeared in a short story in 1926 titled 'Mary Poppins and the Match Man' which introduced Poppins and Bert, the street artist. Travers then went on to create this children's book regarding her characters. It was Travers's first literary success. After this first novel, she continued writing many books in the series following Mary. A very scarce work, made even rarer by Travers' signature to the recto of front endpaper. The personal inscription from the author reads 'Ramona Herdman with love from Pamela Travers Christmas 1934'. John Kirk's copy of the first edition of this important travel work regarding Tuckey's expedition along the River Congo. This account of the journey is decorated by a folding map frontispiece of the coast from Cape Lopez, and thirteen plates, with one hand-coloured. With John Kirk's inscription to the title page 'John Kirk, Zambesi Exped 1858'. Kirk brought this book with him on the expedition to explore the Zambesi river's mouths and tributaries in order to navigate the waterway to the interior. In addition to this, Livingstone was continuing his mission to introduce the people of Africa to Christianity and freeing them from slavery. This was Livingstone's second Zambesi expedition. It was here Kirk went as a botanist and chief assistant. The expedition was difficult, and many expedition members including Kirk noted that Livingstone was an inept leader.
