Association copy, inscribed to a close friend or family member, quite possibly her brother-in-law the journalist Dominick ("Nick") Dunne: "For Nick, who was there through all of these scenes -- from San Juan Bautista to St. John the Divine -- with love always, Joan Didion." Mission San Juan Bautista was where Joan and her husband John Gregory Dunne were married; St. John the Divine was the site of their daughter Quintana Roo Dunne's wedding, the funeral for John Gregory Dunne (as described in this book), and ultimately Joan's own memorial. Laid in is a hand-written note on her personal stationary, bookmark size, 6.5 inches by 3.25: "Dear Nick -- I managed to find you a first edition, so it's almost like getting it in October -- Love, xx, J." NY: Simon & Schuster, 1975. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. A significant association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the title page: "This copy is for Jim Harrison, with love from Richard Brautigan. August 30, 1975, Pine Creek, Montana." With Brautigan's trademark fish sketch. Jim Harrison, of Legends of the Falls fame, and Brautigan were friends and neighbors as part of the "Montana Gang" that also included Tom McGuane, William Hjortsberg, Russell Chatham, and Jimmy Buffett. Both Brautigan and Harrison deservedly have cult followings. This oddball novel takes place in San Francisco in the early Seventies, and its main character is a papier mache bird, Willard, who cohabitates with a  collection of bowling trophies and a few humans. A very near fine copy with a touch of dust soiling to upper text block face in a very good of better jacket with minor rubbing and some browning to inner edges. A centerpiece book for any counterculture or American West collection.

Each writer made his mark in both fiction and nonfiction, in particular in nature writing and bioregionalism. A ready-made exhibit. Wendell Berry remains a leading figure in the environmental and agrarian movements, with his deep attachment to his Kentucky farm. Edward Hoagland has been described by John Updike as the best essayist of my generation, and has written widely on natural history. Paul Horgan won the Pulitzer Prize twice in history, and in 1989 David McCullough argued persuasively in the New York Times that With the exception of Wallace Stegner, no living American has so distinguished himself in both fiction and history. A significant association copy, inscribed at length in the year of publication on the first blank by Hickey, the editor, in a tidy script: "For Durward L. Allen, The mighty atom from Indiana. He picked up a Wisconsin education (via Leopold) without even going there. Thought up the Leopold Medal and then--as Joe Wuduska  [sp?] would put [it] -- won it 'fair and square.' Association copy, inscribed on the half-title page: "For the city and the people of New Orleans, through the Levee of Books from Princeton University, Spring 2006, with heartfelt best wishes, John McPhee." Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy was donated by McPhee to help the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL) rebuild after Katrina, which destroyed eight NOPL branches and damaged five others. Discarded library books were built into a model levee on Princeton's Firestone Plaza as a proxy for new books bought for NOPL, and notable Princeton authors contributed signed volumes. This is an eighth printing (1999), but one of McPhee's own copies. A significant association copy, signed by five Chiefs of the U.S. Forest Service and inscribed at length on the title page by one of them to his Deputy Chief: "To Jim Furnish, you have been perhaps the best Deputy Chief in the history of the Forest Service, because of your land ethic and loyalty. Much of what was accomplished would not have been possible had you not been in your job running the National Forest System. Mike Dombeck, Chief, Forest Service, March 2001." Terrific sentiment. Additionally, this book is signed again by Dombeck and by the previous four Chiefs of the Forest Service on the following dedication page representing 30 years of leadership: Jack Ward Thomas ('93-'96), F. Dale Robertson ('87-'93), R. Max Peterson ('79-'87), and John R. McGuire ('72-'79). SF: San Francisco Arts Festival, 1963. First edition. Loose leaf. Fine. A 14 x 21 inch folio containing eight broadsides produced at various small presses and printers, each signed by the poet and illustrator. It was offered for sale by Donald Allen's Four Seasons Foundation (the Foundation's true first publishing project, apparently, though that's often said to be the Freeway broadsides of 1964). An orange letterpress prospectus from Four Seasons is included that finishes: "Each broadside is signed by the poet and artist. Limited to an edition of 300, of which we have a few remaining sets we are offering ..." Yet it seems clear that not all sets or broadsides were actually signed. Notably, here Lew Welch's signature is present on his "Early Summer Hermit Song," which is scarce. Almost all of the copies of this broadside that we've seen have been only signed by the illustrator, if that. Four Seasons Foundation, San Francisco, 1965. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. A significant association copy, inscribed on the gray front free endpaper: "For Don Allen, comrade! Gary Snyder." Donald Allen founded the Four Seasons Foundation press, which produced this volume and other works by Snyder and the Beats. He then started Grey Fox Press which did the same. He's also known for editing the influential New American Poetry anthology which helped announce and establish the Beats. One of the foremost champions and facilitators of the Beat movement. Snyder dedicated his later book *Left Out in the Rain* to Don Allen and James Laughlin. Published as "Writing 7" in the Four Seasons series, this is the first issue of this booklet, without the price on rear or date on title page. An important association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper: "To a gallant and Forceful Defender of wildlife, Mrs. Charles C. Marshall, a reproach to the Lazy, an Inspiration to the Pure in Heart, and an Example to All, With respectful salaams of the author, W.T. Hornaday, November 17, 1924." Hornaday is well-recognized as a pivotal early champion of wildlife conservation as the first director of the Bronx Zoo and president of the American Bison Society, dedicated to protecting bison in the West. Mrs. Charles Cyrus Marshall (we can't easily find her first name) was an important ally of his and a leader among women in wildlife conservation, serving as the chairman of the conservation committee of the New York City Federation of Women's Clubs. First printing, a notable association copy, inscribed in blue pen on the half-title page to novelist Hortense Calisher prior to publication: "For Hortense-- Regards-- Susan 12/23/65." Calisher (b. 1911) wrote 23 collections and novels, and was three times a finalist for the National Book Award. She also served as president for both the American Academy of Arts and Letters and PEN America (in fact, Sontag directly followed Calisher as president of PEN America in 1989). Sontag (b. 1933) and Against Interpretation need little introduction; simply put, she is considered among the most prominent public intellectuals of her generation, and this was her breakout and perhaps most famous book, her first essay collection. NY: Viking Press, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. An association copy: signed by Gary Snyder on the copyright page. Apparently when asked to sign the book, Snyder replied, slyly, "But I didn't write it." He then relented, though, and out of deference to Kerouac signed the copyright page instead of the title page. The book is a roman a clef,  and Snyder is the main character, Japhy Ryder, who models Buddhist practice and eventually leads the narrator up the Matterhorn in the Eastern Sierra for a sublime experience. Very good with some light rubbing to board edges, a drip stain to top face of text block, toning to pages. In a very good jacket with rubbing and slight loss to corners and spine ends. An iconic book and scarce signed by Japhy.

Simon & Schuster, 2000. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. A quarto, coffee-table style book detailing Clinton s hosting (replete with recipes) in the White House. Inscribed to Martha Stewart, the host of all hosts: "To my friend, Martha, with fond memories and best wishes. Hillary Rodham Clinton, 01/11/01." Martha Stewart famously interviewed Clinton in the red room to talk about what it was like to live and entertain in the White House. She also boldly came out in favor of Clinton for president in 2016. An interesting association and great conversation piece combining two influential women who have also weathered high-profile falls from grace. This book was donated by Stewart to the Mark Twain Library Book Sale in Redding, Connecticut. The book is fine in a very near fine jacket with only a little bumping at corners. NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons/ The Knickerbocker Press, 1893. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. An uncommon book in the first edition, and especially notable because this copy belonged to The American Museum of Natural History which Roosevelt had a close association with. The Museum's bookplate is on the front pastedown with the deaccession stamp "A.M.N.H. Cancelled" on it. Additionally, tipped in on the title page is a "With the compliments of the author" slip--Roosevelt had the book sent to the museum. Roosevelt's father co-founded the museum and the future President spent time there as a boy, even donating his own early natural history and taxidermy collection to the museum. Harpercollins, 1995. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The inscription reads: "For Bob, the love and light of my life, Annie." The relationship between Annie Dillard and her husband, Robert D. Richardson, is a remarkable and well-known story. Both were married, to different people, when Dillard sent Richardson a fan letter out of the blue, prompted by a book he wrote, Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind. Dillard wrote her Master's thesis at Hollins College on Walden, and Henry and the transcendentalists of course have majorly influenced her work, starting with Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Richardson is one of our foremost literary biographers, having written also about Emerson and William James (the latter book earned him the Bancroft Prize). As Dillard described it, she and Richardson had "two lunches and three hand shakes" and then both got divorces so they could get married, in 1988.
