First edition, second state with larger anchor device. Binding fine, jacket neatly split at front upper fold, some perimter chipping but essentially complete. About 2/3 of text pages have old L-shaped water stain at lower outer corner, not affecting text, binding or jacket. Blurb about Conrad on front jacket panel; ad for Nostromo on rear jacket flap. No jacketed copies of either the British or American first editions are recorded in auction records or in the Seeger sale. Very rare.

First British edition. 2 vols. Large 8vo. xxi, 376; xvi, 347pp. With 4 folding maps, 60 full-page photographic plates, over 150 illustrations, coloured plates, four maps & large map in rear pocket. Publisher's decorated red cloth in alligator texture. A beautiful fine set in the very rare publisher's white dust jackets printed in red, probably unique survivors. Jackets mostly complete with loss mainly to upper spine areas, especially on vol. 2, and adjacent upper board areas, especially vol. 1. From the celebrated Morris-Levin collection of publishers' bindings. Rare to find jackets on 19th-century works of Travel & Exploration.

Fifth revised edition with the continuations by J. G. Worlmann and K. A. Menzel. Contemporary orange paste paper boards with matching original bindery dust jackets surviving on 10 of 12 volumes. Jackets underlaid with either manuscript scrap or printer's waste. Some jackets glued at flaps, sealing the bindings within them, a common practice. Those not sealed show the bindings to be very fine, protected since new by the binder's handmade jackets. Bindings have blank labels; jackets have handwritten spine labels. This is the only large multi-volume work we have encountered with surviving bindery jackets. The 200-year-old jackets are complete with uniform general rubbing and moderate darkening on spines.

With all 14 text volumes and all 6 map volumes. Usual mixed editions with title page dates ranging from 1911 to 1935. This set was sold by Maggs. Bros. 20 years ago with their invoice. Selling price then was £3,000. Bindings bright and fresh, fine condition. Jackets also fine with virtually no loss. Volumes clean, hinges strong. Two volumes (vol. 4, part 2, and vol. 5) have old discoloring dampstain to rear boards (very small in vol. 5, larger in other), but the jacket exteriors remain fine. All jackets now in plastic and stunning on the shelf. A really lovely set.

12mo. AEG. 276 pp. 4 pp. ads. Publisher's presentation blue cloth binding with illustrated dust jacket. The evidence indicates that this jacket and binding are original unused stock from the 1890s. During the 1900-20 period, Macmillan offered four Kipling titles - The Jungle Book, The Second Jungle Book, Captains Courageous, and Soldier Tales - in "special bindings for presentation" in addition to the standard red cloth trade editions. The bindings and jackets used for this special offering match the original bindings and jackets issued on those same four titles in the 1890s, and at the same 6-shillings price on the jacket spines. If Macmillan had been issuing new bindings and jackets to replicate the 1890s style, it probably would not have included Soldier Tales, a very slow seller, in such an offering. Nor were any popular post-1900 titles such as Kim or Puck of Pook's Hill included in this special offering - just the four titles that originally had the ornate blue bindings and illustrated jackets… Leer más
