Rugby: Thomas Hughes, 1833. First Edition. . Hardcover. Good. This is the actual school book owned by Thomas Hughes who wrote the autobiographical work "Tom Brown's Schooldays" about his days at Rugby. The book is "Aristotles De Rhetorica" and was published in 1833, the same year that Thomas Hughes went to Rugby. At the top of the title page it is signed "Thos Hughes Rugby". What is more interesting is that this book contains interleaving blank pages for translation. The first few pages contain the diligent translation efforts of Hughes. However Hughes was no great scholar despite the personal tutoring he received on his Aristotle from Dr Arnold and subsequent pages contain the sketches & doodlings of Hughes. There are about thirty drawings all told in the book by Hughes. There are boxers, as one would expect, because in Tom Browns schooldays Hughes wrote about the current boxing matches and he became a good amateur boxer himself. A very good copy for its age. full vellum - yellowed with minor soiling, with more modern leather/gilt titling on spine. slight upward bow to covers. po bookplate and a few pencil notes on front pastedown, which has some bubbling, has possibly been re-stuck. some light foxing and minor blemishes. Southampton: Ordnance Survey, 1905. Second edition. . Paperback. Good. About 500 to 1500 of these large maps in 3 map chests. Some have land registry colouring of land boundaries. Some are untouched. Surveyed in 1882 revised in 1905 and printed as second edition in 1905. Some are reprints of the second edition from 1941 & 1925 and some are 1905. Some are canvas backed, others are paper. This is a fairly comprehensive and extensive collection of the area of Devon around plymouth. For sale as a lot. Ideal for a library or college. Price depends on the number ( I haven't counted them) and will be £10 per map. Carriage can be arranged in UK. A buyer abroad would have to arrange collection.

London: N Casswell, 1934. First Edition. . Hardcover. Good. The student was N Casswell of 24 Thurlow Rd London NW3. But also mentioned is Edna Crampton Regent St. The notebook which is in pencil begins Matthew 6 The Lords Payer in an Octave. "The right approach to prayer is through Self-remembering". etc "Cosmoses" "Seven Cosmoses- corresponding very nearly to the ring of creation". Notes from a programme of teaching running fron September 1934 to February 1936. Who the Tutor was is unclear, perhaps Ouspensky, Gurdjieff or Orage, JG Bennett, Maurice Nicoll or perhaps Jane Heap, an American publisher who moved in 1935 to London to set up a new study group. Mention of a "Sub Group". Mention of Kundalini a imagination which is definately a Gurdjieffian concept. Lots of diagrams on Hydrogen, octaves etc which I have never seen before. Finsbury: Finsbury Park Empire., 1910. First Edition. . Hardcover. Good. The presence of a press cutting of a letter by W S Rosee and that some of the photos are dedicated to Bill or Rosee suggest that the photos & other items belonged to W S Rosee who was box office manager on the opening Day (hence the presence of A souvenir of opening Sept 5th 1910. I cannot read two of the autographs. All these items are pasted into a copy of Flestead's "Stars who made the Hall". Including signed Houdini photograph from that era worth £3,000+

Newstead: Byron, 1111. Silver. Good. A silver metal wax seal bearing the coat of arms of the Byron family motto "Crede Byron". Two horses flank a shield with a coronet above. The seal now has a ring on top as presumably it was converted into a pendant. Lord Byron certainly used a similar seal e.g. "red wax seal impressed with Byron's coat of arms surmounted by a coronet; postmarked MayFair' and addressed to Miss E. Bridget Pigot./ Southwell/Notts'." However I haven't managed to find an image of a seal to compare them to see it is was Lord Byron's or an association item or a souvenir.

'Leaves from a journal' 34pp bound into front of 'Heath's illustrations of the works of Byron'. Leaves from a journal has signed from the author, Patrick, Lord Robertson (one of the supreme judges of Scotland) to James Gordon of Craig on title page. Byron's mother was Catherine (Kitty) Gordon. Red cloth covers scuffed and tatty, spine cloth missing. This was a private printing not for sale.

Restored leather bound with modern banded spines, boards appear to be original. First part dated 1651, parts two-five dated 1852. Pages possibly cut down. Facsimile 4 leaves (8pp) on old paper: G1-G4. From Lenckiewicz's library sold (by Sothebys) after his death, po name on ffep - Johanny Yarbrough, 1662; sold at auction by Sothebys in 1923. Brown staining to fore edge, does not affect text, some foxing, brown spots and a few ink spots on some pages. Chips to fore edge of front eps and first few pages. Comes complete with modern box, unfortunately since restoration does not currently fit! Immediate despatch from the UK. (B)

Therefore published in Beethoven's Lifetime. Beethoven 1770 - 1827, so this is early period. Reputedly the12 Waltzes are "seldom heard". British Library & National Library of Australia have copies but noone else apparently, so rare.

Munich: Radio Free Europe, 1956. First Edition. . Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Typescript material in 18 uniform bound volumes from September 1956 to January 1963. Perhaps the last chance to get hold of some of the original material. Funded primarily by Congress through the CIA until 1972, the NCFE maintained a public identity as a private corporation of freedom-loving American citizens. A separate organization, the Crusade for Freedom, was formed in 1950 to promote the NCFE and to raise money for its activities. Radio Free Europe was one of the activities of the National Committee for a Free Europe. RFE initiated broadcasting on July 4, 1950, the first 30 minutes of news, information, and political analysis was sent to Czechoslovakia, to be followed later that year by programs to Romania, Hungary, Poland, and Bulgaria.
