The first of Montgomery's books to be published by a Canadian publisher, this is one of her most sought-after titles, rarely found in a dust jacket, even one as weary as this specimen (oddly, it is easier to find a signed copy than one with a jacket). Collects more than 90 poems by the author of 'Anne of Green Gables,' most of which were published in almost two dozen Canadian and American magazines. Bell, a Scottish educator and ordained Church of England priest, describes and promotes his system of education in which smarter children are taught in the usual fashion, then given the responsibility of teaching those who are a wee bit slower on the uptake (sort of like an educational pyramid scheme, or Amway for teachers). Library rebind in tan cloth w/leatherette spine/corners, untrimmed edges, replaced pastedowns/end papers, pp. i-xvi (including errata), 1-348. Light smudging to covers, library stamps/numbers on several pages at front, partial split between end paper/title page (beginning at top and stretching about half-way down), a bit of marginalia/underlining by previous owner, some general wear. Mainly internally tight. A very scarce item, seldom found in any condition at all..

Geneva: Rolex Watch Co. Ltd., 1946. Book. Illus. by Hans Tomamichel. Very Good. Stiff Card Wraps. Limited Edition.. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A four-volume set limited to 1,000 copies, this one being #341. Translated by R Grandvoinet. Covers decorated w/Rolex's five-point crown logo, title bands tipped on, 31, 29, 26, and 43 pages respectively, with limitation page at rear of each volume, the set housed in crown-decorated slipcase. All four volumes w/previous owner's signature, lightly tanned pages, in G edgeworn slipcase w/4" separation at left spine edge, considerably shorter edge separations elsewhere, minor chipping at corners. Quite scarce in first edition w/slipcase. (Apropos of nothing, but amusing to me because Rolex has a generally well-deserved reputation for accuracy and precision, the copyright page for Volume II credits the Roley Watch Co. Ltd. -- the other three volumes have it right.).

According to the 'Dictionary of Canadian Biography,' Greenshields was a Canadian businessman and art critic, who wrote two books, 'The subjective view of landscape painting' and 'Landscape painting and modern Dutch artists,' both of which promoted the Hague School and viewed Impressionism as having no staying power. One of two books on jazz written by an accomplished professor of English at Carleton University (among several other institutions of higher learning worldwide), who for 75 years was a renowned jazz enthusiast/collector/authority who amassed a collection of 9,000 records before bequeathing them to Carleton upon his death in 2018. Inscription reads, "For Harold/with all good wishes/Trevor/May 2009". A very scarce title. 98 pages, illustrated w/four plates (three in colour). Internally tight and clean w/light general wear. .

Issued simultaneously with the hardcover edition, this is the story of a horrific maritime tragedy that is, surprisingly, relatively unknown today. On June 15, 1904, more than 1,000 of the 1,342 people on board the sidewheel passenger steamboat General Slocum perished when the boat caught fire and sank in New York City's East River, near North Brother Island. Most of the victims were women and children. Until the terrorist attacks in September of 2001, the number of lives lost was the most in the history of the city. 251 pages (plus one-page advertisement for additional copies of the book), illustrated.
