Melbourne: Popular Print Art Group, 1954. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The folder is foxed, as is the Noel Counihan cover image, though the latter lightly and mainly at the edges. The introductory sheet is stained at the head, this has seeped though the blank verso and again underneath the title. It is obviously there but not shatteringly obnoxious. A scan is available on request. The list of prints and the prints themselves are in fine condition. A nice set. "A portfolio of four unbound sheets of letterpress and fourteen linocuts produced by ten artists from the left wing Melbourne collective sympathetic to the unionist sentiments of the Ballarat miners. The cover has a tipped-on original Noel Counihan linocut printed in light blue ink. It is known that one (or more?) copies were issued with an additional proof linocut of The sentry by Maurice Carter, printed in umber. London: John Murray, 1862. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. vi 365 pages, indexed, illustrated, plus 32 pages of other John Murray publications. Brown cloth with gilt flower on front panel. The boards: The spine strip is badly damaged, with loss along the edge and tail; the front board wears the remnants of a label, and the edges are chipped. Internally: there are two handwritten numbers on the head of the spine strip, the top one crossed out, the second repeated on the verso of the front end paper; the front end paper and the following blank page are partially detached; there are a series of ownership inscriptions - a stamp on the front end paper; three on the title page as well as two more interspersed along the page's blank edge and o, plus a handwritten one, again on the title page. One of the ownership stamps is superimposed on an association one (ECLECTIC ASSOCIATION of VICTORIA), the latter with its stamp also on the blank edge of the fold out diagram. Napoli. Quarter Bound. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. In both volumes the edges of the boards are chipped and there is foxing throughout. In Vol. 1 the blank page separating the last issue of 1840 and the first one of 1841 is torn and there are handwritten annotations in biro on the front and back end papers. In Volume 2 the annotations are on the front end paper only . Volume 1 is missing issues 25 and 26 which cover the period in late June to mid July 1840. The issues for the years 1841 and 1842 are complete, as is Volume 2 . An excellent set.

The sketches for the film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" Unpaginated. 12 colour plates tipped in on brown background leaves, individually protected with titled tissue paper. Black and white sketches throughout.Original wheat buckram with black lettering. The book has a series of minor faults: There is a tiny biro mark on the tail of front board; the boards have lightly lifted; The pages are lightly bumped at the tail; Snow White's tissue paper has a short closed, tear at the tail; The hinge on the page with the 'Happy' sketches is cracked, though the binding remains solid. Melbourne: John Ferres (Government Printer), 1869. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The book has been beautifully restored. The original spine has been pasted onto a new spine strip and apart from a missing square towards the tail, which has been replaced with a similar coloured one, can be almost compared to Audrey Hepburn's neck. The end papers and both paste downs have been replaced and there is a neat ownership signature on the title page. The fold out map facing page 164 has been incorrectly folded and and in part juts out of the boards.The edges of page 143 -150 are damaged. For all these faults, it remains a clean and solid copy that will last another 150 years. Includes plates and fold out maps.

Newcastle: Printed By Edward Walker, for T. Bewick: Sold By Him and Longman and Rees London, 1804. Full-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ...... Part One Containing the History and Description of Land Birds; Part II. Containing the History and Description of Water Birds ." bound together in one volume. The supplementary volumes were published in 1821. Printed by Edward Walker, Pilgrim-Street, for T. Bewick : Sold by Him and E.Charnley, Newcastle; and Longman and Co., London. The three volumes have been beautifully rebound in full leather, with a decorative gilt edge and with five raised bands and a gilt decoration and gilt lettering to spine. It retains the original end papers and paste downs, these are badly foxed, and indeed there is intermittent foxing throughout all three volumes. The front board of Volume 2 has been damaged by what appears to be a series of pin pricks. It is only noticeable close up. La Haye, 1748. Full-Leather. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. viii 314 pages, 44 letters. No publisher given, just this "A La Haye : se vend chez Nicolas van Daalen" This is a rare copy of the sequel to "L'Espion Dans Les Cours Des Princes Chrétiens " Worldcat lists only one edition, this 1748 one, and gives Marana as the author. I could find nothing else about it. FAULTS: The front board has lifted, possibly because of shrinking vellum and the sharpness of the print varies throughout the book, but it is always legible; the Content's page and the last page, including the back end paper, are badly tanned ; the the spine is lightly damaged with 2 small holes to the vellum, handwritten on the spine in what I would say matches the period 'L'ESPION TURC'. The front end paper and the following blank page are ragged at the edges, with very minor loss, as well as the tail of the title page. There is also a 20th century annotation : 'G.P. London: Sotheby's Publications, 1987. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Two Volumes in slipcase, all 3 immaculate. From page 597 to the back end paper, there is a tiny bump, which becomes more pronounced towards the end. It's as though a minute seed fell on the page and left an indentation, but no stain. The two volumes combine to 1131 pages. Illustrated throughout in coloured and black and white, includes a glossary, index and bibliography. The Art of the Japanese Book surveys the work of the major Japanese book artists from the first book of the early 1600s to those that were published up to the end of the American occupation. The set is very heavy and will attract additional postage, particularly high for overseas mailings.

The leather is rubbed and chipped at the edges; the front hinge has been reinfoced with tape and there is a "go to page annotation" in biro on the front paste down and a pencil one on the front end paper; the front paste down also suffers from minor insect damage.The spine is cracked at page 400/4001 and this has been reapaired with tape (I'm innocen!) as have pp 408 to 425. Canoni Della Pittura : II. Riflessione Sull' Arte Critico-Pittorica : III. Cavalleri Distintivi Delle Diverse Scuole Al Pittura, : IV. Esame Analitico Dei Piu` Celebri Quadri Delle Chiese, E Delle Piu` Rinovate Pitture A Frasco De' Palagi Di Roma. The book was dedicated to: ' A Sua Eccelenza il Signor D. Stanislao Sanseverino Amatore delle Belle Arti.' Quarter bound with marbled boards, decorative gilt spine, probably a 19th century rebind. The gilt title is lightly rubbed; and the spine cracked between pp 94 - 95, though this does not weaken the binding; on page 141/142 the head's outer edge suffers from minor loss which is well clear of the print . Green cloth, with gilt print on spine. The tail's outer edge is chipped, with loss of cloth, on the front board; and the head of the spine strip lightly damaged. and both boards are lightly rubbed. There is a small bookseller's label on the front paste down and an ownership stamp on the title page and the half title page and the outer edge p.100; p162 has a neat annotation on the outer edge, and sadly there is intermittent mild foxing throughout the book. Overall a clean, unmarked copy in very good binding. Paris: Librairie Nouvelle, 1859. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The book has been rebound, three quarters leatherette. It has new boards, new end papers and paste downs and a new spine strip, underneath which one can see the original raised bands. The back board is lightly discoloured at the head. There are also three blank sheets at beginning and the end of the book, added I assume with the rebinding. There are two page references opposite the title page, both written in pencil.The copy is in immaculate condition, apart from minor staining on the half title page which occured either when printed or when rebound. High Ousegate: T.Wilson and R. Spence, 1806. Full-Leather. Very Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Bewick, T. The book has been beautifully rebound in leather. The front and back boards have a gilt border, the spine has decorated raised bands with the title near the head and the date on the tail, all in gilt. The edges are chipped and the leather knocked at the head of the spine and along its front edge and again one small section on the outer edge of the front board. There are new end papers, although the original have been retained; there are three ownership sigantures on the original front end paper, all in ink, the last one being David Spode's, Australian antiquarian bookseller; the pages tanned with mild, intermittent foxing. Pages 125 to 128 have been rough cut by the printer. For all its faults, it remains a handsome volume illustrated with woodcuts by Bewick.

Lightning Ridge NSW: Len Cram, 1998. Pictorial Boards. Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 368 pages, illustrated, includes bibliography, glossary and index. Overseas customers please note the book is heavy and will attract additional postage. Special Collector's Edition. A very small section at the head of the hinge is exposed; further down, along the same hinge, part of the front paste down has become attached to the title page, causing two short, closed tears. The problem appears to be a printing error, not brute force. It does nor affect the binding, which remains solid throughout and it is not particularly offensive. Apart from this fault, the book is in excellent condition, clean, unmarked and appears almost unread. 'A Journey with Colour A History of Queensland Opal 1869-1979' is Volume One of a four volume set covering the history of Australian opal mines. Its author, Len Cram, is a recognised world authority on Australian opals .

Three quarter leather with gold emboss, decorative spine, gilt print aand raised band . Coloured maps and profusely illustrated.The boards are rubbed, the back one badly and the front one is partially detached towards the head, leaving a small gap. There is no danger of the board as such becoming detached.There is a presentation page claimed by Daniel. Page 115/6 have a short, closed tear at the head, while pp133/34 have two, one at the tail one on the outer edge. There are other pages with very small tears and not many at that. None affects the print.Ten plates are damp affected, bar one which touches a small part of the print, the stain is always on the blank outer edge. Melbourne Sydney Wellington: Lothian Publishing, 1952. Limited /Numbered . Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Dust jacket is torn, with loss to the head and tail. The damage is not quite so stark now that the jacket is protected by library sleaving. The boards are bowed, but internally the book is faultless. Includes a catalogue of an exhibition held by Wheeler at the Athenaeum gallery in March 1953. "of this edition, only 25 copies have been printed, all of which have been numbered and signed by the artist" One painting per page, coloured ones tipped in. This copy is no.16. Lyon: Vefve De Cl. Rigavd, 1643. Full-Leather. Fair. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. The title continues: " Oevvre Historique & Morale du R.P. Athanase de Saincte Agnes, Augustin deschausse, Theologien & Predicateur " The book also includes at the end a list of of quoted authors. The vellum is soiled, the spine strip bumped head and tail, and the title on the spine faded. The boards are pushed upwards, possibly caused by the vellum shrinking. The spine also sports a torn label witha number "554" or maybe "534" The front end paper, which at some stage was also the front paste down, is torn, and there is loss to the blank outer edge of pp.105/06, as well as pp. 219/220; pp.155 - 162 also have minor loss to the tail. From page 265 the page numbering becomes a tad bizarre, though the book is not misbound, the page numbering is wrong. The original boards were first loosely covered with paper, then leather.
