George Allen & Unwin, 1954 - 1956. 1st edition.. Hardback. Cloth, G. 3 volumes, 423pp, 352pp, 416pp, b/w map of the Shire in volume I, folding map of Middle Earth at the rear of each volume ( detached in volume I ), cloth rubbed with a little loss at the corners, small split in the cloth on the spine of volume I, gilt title lettering, a fair set. Fellowship in a December 1954 2nd impression. Towers is a 1956 4th impression & Return is a November 1955 2nd impression. A classic work of fiction, much imitated but never equalled. The first volume is techincally the first revised edition of the text - the printers had, inexplicably broken up the forms holding the type after the first impression was struck, thus the whole book had to be reset it for this printing. This enabled Tolkien's corrections to the text to be included.

The Quarterly Journal Of Science, Literature And The Arts Volume XII [ 12 ] N° XXIII [ 23 ] & N° XXIV [ 24 ]. Faraday's papers occupy pp 74 - 96 of N° XXIII & pp 283 - 285 of N° XXIV [ 24 ], in them he is the first to describe the conversion of electrical & magnetic forces into mechanical movement - the basis of the electro magnetic motor. Two plates accompany his papers, one showing his aparatus. The book also contains a paper by E W A Hay 'On An Ancient Monument Of Sculpture In Stone representing The Theban Sphinx, Which was Recently Discovered At Colchester In Essex' which is illustrated with 4 fine plates. Cloth, F. 2 volumes, xxxvi+1783pp, x+2109pp, in the slipase as issued & with the large folding 'Guide to the Thusaurus' wall chart, an immaculate set. A monumental lexographical enterprise, almost 50 years of scholarship. The book is first historical thesaurus to be compiled for any of the world's languages, and includes almost the entire vocabulary of English from Old English to the present day, as recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary and specialist dictionaries of Old English.

Contemporary speckled calf, VG. 2 volumes, [xii]+lix+487pp, vi+[xiv]+671pp, engraved frontis', bindings rather rubbed at the edges, upper hinge to volume 1 split but holding, head of spines rubbed, spines tooled in gilt with contrasting red & green labels, typical of Hanway. some wear but a nice set. Bookplate of Sir John Smith Burges to each volume. Scarce philanthropic work arranged in the form of dialogues between a father & daughter, which was intended to improve the morals of servants. Jonas Hanway [ 1712 - 1786 ], the English traveller and philanthropist who, it is claimed, was a pioneer of the use of the umbrella in Britain.

Heinemann, 1927. 1st edition, 2nd impression.. Hardback. Cloth, G. [viii]+118pp, b/w frontis & 11 b/w plates by the author, scattered foxing to the page margins, cloth unevenly sunned from the original purple to a sandy grey, cloth rubbed at the corners. Part of one of the dustjaket flaps is laid in. The second printing of Heinemann's British edition of Gibran's work which had first been published in 1923 by Alfred Knopf of New York ( an ambitious first print run of 2,000 copies of which Knopf sold 1,159 ). The hugely influential collection of 26 prose poetry fables have remained in print ever since. The fables are philosophical musings on life & the human condition. Khalil Gibran [ 1883 - 1931 ]. Lebanese American writer, poet and visual artist, influenced by the work of William Blake.

Disbound, VG. xl+320pp, with half title, original upper printers board present, spine lacking, the book has new hesian to the spine & a repacement rear board as if someone had started to rebind the book, 2 ink stamps of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to the title, text block un-opened, pages uncut. A collection of eleven papers on contagious diseases of the West Indies which were written over several years & sent to Dr Donald Monro [ 1727 - 1802 ] of Scotland. Six of the letters are by Dr John Quier [ 1739 - 1822 ] and include an accounts of his experiments with small pox and the mass inoculation of slaves at the Worthy Park plantation. [xii]+336pp, dustjacket a little tanned to the spine & slightly chipped along the edges, internally fine, small chip to the leather at the head of the spine, a nice, near fine copy. The second of De Fleury's cocktail books, containing 2094 drink recipes from the 18th century onwards.

Mid 19th century cloth, VG. 2 volumes, lx+444pp, [tp]+480pp, 2 folding maps to each volume with one hand coloured, folding chart, maps in good order with no tears, text blocks a little foxed to the margins, recased with new endpapers preserving the original cloth bindings & leather lettering pieces, small neat bookplate to each volume, a nice set. LACKS the folio plate volume which was offered as an extra by the publishers ( the 2 text volumes could be had for 12Fr, the atlas & plate volume for an extra 30Fr - see Graesse III 21 ). An account of the author's journey along the Black Sea littoral and into the Caucasus. Gamba who was French consul at Tiflis, had been charged by the Duc de Richelieu to develop Black Sea and trans-Caucasus trade routes. Uncommon.

Cloth, dj, VG/G+. xxiv+492pp, 50 ( mostly folding ) working plans, 82 b/w plates showing 245 images, index, cloth a little bumped & rubbed at the edges, the occasional plan mis-folded which has resulted in an extra crease to the plan, endpapers & fore edges foxed, dustjacket marked (grease?) to the rear panel & a littel chipped at the head of the spine, but overall an attractive copy of an uncommon work. A comprehensive work which covers the design & manufacture of all manner of bodies for motor vehicles. From 2 seater open sports cars to prison vans. Superbly illustrated.

Diced calf, VG. 172+[iv]+94pp, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, leather a little rubbed & upper hinge cracked but holding, Ex Libris Caroli Waldstein with their armorial bookplate, neat late 19th century annotation to the first blank, pages of the second title a little browned, a nice copy. Two political tracts, published in France in the early days of the Republic, which look back to the English protectorate & the lessons to be learnt. The first is a translation of 'Killing Noe Murder' [1658] a pamphlet which advocates the assassination of Oliver Cromwell. Authorship has been attributed to either Edward Sexby or Silius Titus. Cromwell is considered a tyrant, equal to Caligula and Nero - the people must rise up & rid them selves of such a despot, and tyrannicide can not be regarded as an act of murder. [tp]+568pp, with initial & last blanks, Printed in Fraktur & latin script, some yellowing to the paper, Vellum soiled uniformly with the spine a gray colour & with a small split at the base of the upper hinge, ties detached & missing, internally a nice copy save for the yellowing of the paper. Interesting printing of a Document which alleges that the Monastic Lands belonging to the Dukes of Würtemburg were to have reverted to the Roman Catholic Church. Besold came by the document during the upheaval of the Thirty Years War and had it printed at a time when the Duke was in exile. Upon the Duke's restoration the book was vigourously suppressed. Christoph Besold [ 1577 - 1638 ] born of Protestant parents he converted to Catholicism in 1635. Half green calf over moire cloth, VG. 85 volumes in 42, various paginations, marbled endpapers, green silk page marker to eah volume, attractively bound with 4 raised bands & 5 compartments with gilt tooling & lettering, leather a little rubbed & with some of the lettering on a few volumes a little worn, but generally an attractive set. A uniformly bound collection of novels & poems by the French author Charles Paul de Kock [ 1793 - 1871 ] Although one of the most popular writers of his day in terms of book sales, he acquired a literary reputation for low-brow output in poor taste. His works are of middle class Parisian life, of guinguettes and cabarets and equivocal adventures of one sort or another.

The Ten volumes are - American Writers ( vols 1 - 4 ), British, Irish, & Commonwealth Writers ( vols 5 - 6 ), European Writers ( vol 7 ), World Writers ( vol 8 ), Topical Essays ( vol 9 ) & Cumulative Indexes ( vol 10 ). The set covering 625 writers in total, representing 44 countries and the history of short fiction from antiquity to the 21st century. The set also offers 53 informative overviews.

Printed by Robert And Andrew Foulis, Glasgow, 1749. 2nd impression.. Hardback. Half calf over marbled boards, VG. vi+148pp, booksellers ticket of Thomas Miller of Dundee to the pastedown, a previous owner has added 'Hamilton of Bangour' in ink to the title, a nice clean near fine copy. Paper fault at page 128 not affecting the text. This copy has the preface over 2 pages with the last line of pp3 reads 'It is owing to the delicay of' in some copies the preface is contained upon a single page. The work was first issued in 1748 with an errata slip & page 133 mis-numbered. The errors have been corrected in this impression. A 'second edition' of the book ( infact a third impression ) contains a portrait frontis, this 2nd impression & the first edition of 1748 do not. Late 18th century half calf over marbled boards, VG. together 3 volumes. tp+[iv]+652+[20]pp, ht+tp+[iv]+588pp, tp+591- 1320+[47]pp, the first work has a title page portrait vignette & the whole is printed in double column within a ruled border, lacks the initial blank leaf a1, pagination errors, with the paper yellowed, the latter part of the work more browned, with a small worm hole to the margin of the last 100pp outside the ruled border. The second work which occupies the second 2 volumes has titles printed in red & black with a woodcut printers device in two colours, printed in double column & again many miss-paginations, half title with an old repair, LACKS GGggii ( leaf 903-904, 909-910 ), margin of pp1019 with a little loss but text unaffected, one sheet has been corrected by pasting the true signature… Leer más

Full later tan morocco, F. 283pp+page of adverts on verso of pp283, engraved frontis, engraved title, letterpress title, corrigenda slip tipped in at the rear, all edges gilt, a fine copy. Nicely, if plainly bound in an unsigned binding with gilt dentelles, signature of Ursula Devereux on an initial blank, a lovely copy. Printed by Charles Corrall of Charing Cross in the tiny Diamond 4.5 point type. a landmark in typography. Page size in this copy is 80mm x 45mm. A miniature printing of Virgil by William Pickering, part of his 'Diamond Classics' series which was begun in 1819. The tiny type noted for its fine clarity despite small size. This is reputed to be the scarcest title in the series after a fire destroyed all but 100 copies in Corrall's premises.
