New York, 1898 Fine 2-page handwritten, signed letter from Jacob A Riis to Mr Clarke, on 6"x9" Mulberry Street letterhead, in which he conveys the following: "Gov Roosevelt writes to me from Oyster Bay 'I wish I could accept, but it is an absolute impossibility I cannot do it' " Riis goes on to explain that the Governor had 200 urgent invitations to speak and "the mere labor of declining, as he had to, was enormous" The remainder of the letter references the Clarkes, a meeting, and New Haven (Ct) as Riis writes "perhaps 'the little dollar' that forms the stories in my new book 'Out of Mulberry Street' came from New Haven." Illustrated cloth covered boards. Light soiling to cloth, a couple of tiny brown spots to text edge and rear board verso. Insribed in 1996 by Wilk to prior owners, and signed by Hirschfeld 5/18/1985 on title page. Humorous biographical sketches and notes on S. (Sidney) J. Perelman (1904-1979), author, humorist and screenwriter whose credits include Marx Brothers films, Around the World in 80 Days, numerous books, and the New Yorker Magazine. Both Wilk, who died in 2011 and Hirschfeld (1903-2003) were good friends with Perelman.
