Title page is printed in red and black and displays a vignette depicting an assayer working at a muffle furnace. 273 woodcut illustrations by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch accompany the text, including two fold out plates. Many of the woodcuts are almost a full page in size. Bound in full period vellum with usual age-toning, soiling and wear. Ribbon ties are lacking. Two small areas of careful repair are visible on the inner front cover, near the joint. The bottom tail cap contains minor restoration. The entire book, including the text, was printed from engraved copper plates – 60 plates (an illustrated title page plate, 29 anatomical plates and 30 calligraphic letterpress plates). Bound in a contemporary or near contemporary binding with calf spine and decorative paste paper boards - rubbed, edges shelf worn, old ink stain on rear cover. Both the upper portion of the spine and the tail cap are carefully restored. Board corners are neatly repaired. Interior contains an occasional minor spots of marginal foxing; a couple of tiny holes or paper defects are present on the text plate opposite plate 20. The leaves are otherwise generally clean. Francois-Michel Disdier (1708-1781) was a professor of surgery and a drawing master at the Academy of Painting in Paris. All edges of the book block are gilt. The binding contains areas of rubbing and wear; minor careful restoration is present to the head cap of the spine and to the corner tips of the boards. The upper corner tip of the front blank fly leaf is restored. Interior pages show some light age-toning and scattered mild foxing but are generally clean. This is a Latin translation from the Greek of the seven tragedies of Sophocles - Ajax Flagellifer, Electra, Oedipus Tyrannus, Antigone, Oedipus Coloneus, Trachiniae, Philoctetes. A small pair of initials are lightly written in an old hand on the verso of the title. Bound in modern full calf with panels in blind after an early period style. Jean Picard’s "De Prisca Celtopaedia" discusses the development of language, arts and science in ancient Gaul. The author uses place names, ancient sources and epigraphic evidence to argue that the Greek language had originated in Gaul and that the Gallic Druids and Bards were developing philosophy, science and poetry long before other cultures. Antverpiae: Ex officina Plantiniana apud viduam, & Ioannem Moretum, 1595. Hardcover. See Description. Second edition, corrected. Small 8vo. pp. 137, [7]. With 22 engravings accompanying the text. Title page contains the Plantin device. Bound in a fine unsigned modern full calf binding with blind stamped and gilt boards and an extra-gilt spine. Interior pages are clean and fresh with an occasional spot. Edges are trimmed a bit closely on some leaves. A very attractive copy. The engravings, which mostly depict different forms of crucifixion, are ascribed to the Dutch engraver Peter van der Borcht. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was a Belgian antiquarian who specialized in the study of ancient and classical history. His work "De cruce libri tres" (first printed in 1583) is an important scholarly study on crucifixion in antiquity. [Bibliographie Lipsienne I, pp. 189-190; Adams L-778].

Scattered foxing - usually mild (heavier on verso blanks of some plates). This second edition was printed by Elzevier. Pages are generally clean. A bibliographical note (listing several references) and an old ownership inscription - "ex bibliotheca Kripperdorfia" - are written in old hand on the front blank. The Monarchia solipsorum is bitter satire written against the Jesuits which, in its day, caused quite a sensation. The author describes a secret society of "Solipsen" (those who wish to govern entirely) understood to mean the Jesuits. The supposed laws, secret instructions and clandestine operations of the organization are discussed. The author's name is given as Lucius Cornelius Europaeus which is a pseudonym.
