Acts in this format are extremely rare and are referred to as Òfugitive sheetsÓ or sessional laws they were printed up at the end of each session. Some of them were later collected into a codeÑone had been printed in 1769 and there was not another one done until 1785. Once collected into a code, many of the sessionals were discarded. Despite the wording of the title, there was never an index to the first publication which deals with the raising of public money to recompense tobacco farmers for crops burnt or lost at inspection warehousesÑa sum of £30,000 was authorized. Woodstock, Virginia: Printed at the Tenth Legion Offices, 1861. . 16mo, buff wrappers, front detached; chipping and some dog-earing to covers and text; faint ownership signature of Wm. Bargelt on front cover No other copy located. The Muhlenburg Rifles was founded in 1859, but no previous by-laws have been found. This type of publication, bye-laws of militia regiments of the Civil War era, are extremely rare (a similar Virginia example that has survived is in the Boston Atheneum and is for the Rockingham Rifles of Harrisonburg, simply dated 1861 which Crandall included in her Confederate Imprints. It should be noted that she included several Southern imprints printed in 1861 with the notation "possibly printed before the secession." The By-Laws are largely concerned with behavior, the collection of fines, and schedules for parades and drills. Upon secession in April 1861 the Rifles reported for duty at Harper's Ferry and were assigned to the 10th Regiment, Virginia… Leer más

S.l.:: s.n.,, 1882-1900.. . Single sheet of gray paper, printed on one side only, 9 3/8 5 7/8 inches, small chip out of left-hand margin and small loss to one corner; unevenly printed with a surprising number of different fonts and sizes. Unrecorded imprint. It is possible that this notice with, the place and date left blank. was for a traveling religious tableau and lecture to be undertaken, perhaps in the North, to raise money for African missionaries, for there seems to be a thread of African-related work suggested in the choice of the men included. After describing the tableaux depicting various elements in the Life of Moses, there is scheduled a homage made to two recently dead Baptist Preachers: Edenborough G. Corprew who died in Portsmouth, Virginia and Solomon Cosby, a Danville, Virginia native who died in Abeokuta, West Africa, aged 31. Both men died in 1881. Also mentioned in the broadside is John Jasper (1812–1901), another prominent Virginia Baptist Preacher, best remembered for… Leer más

London:: Printed for J. Baker at the Black Boy in Pater-Noster Row, ,.. Not illustrated, Parts I & II of three. 8vo, modern gray plain wrappers, title and final leaf of Part I darkened by previous binding. FIRST EDITIONS. Part I is the edition having a title vignette composed of flowers and leaves and with no sun, no priority established. The White Staff is the symbol of office of the Lord High Treasurer and in this instance, refers to Robert Harley (Earl of Oxford), the Tory politician who had successfully negotiated in 1713 with the French, the Treaty of Utrecht, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. Defoe’s release from prison in 1703 had been due to Harley’s intervention and as a result, the author was paid to write complimentary pamphlets about the government. Harley lost Queen Anne's patronage just before she died and was forced into retirement; the Secret History was intended to gain the public’s support, however, as it appeared anonymously, and most considered that it had… Leer más

On one side of the handbill is a letter from the lawyer of the owners of the Woodhull Claflin Weekly, (two sisters, Victoria Woodhill and Tennessee Claflin) to Train, informing him that “The Bondsmen for my clients…utterly refuse that “The Train Ligue” should be sold on their premises…and you therefore will have to change the agency….” The second side outlines the contents of No. 1 and No.2 of the Ligue, both entitled “Woodhull & Claflin in the Bastille” and each having different additional articles. This handbill goes to the center of one of the most publicized and notorious scandals of the late 19th century. The Woodhull Claflin Weekly had, just a month earlier, published an account of the extra marital affair between Henry Ward Beecher, one of America’s best known clergymen (and the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe)… Leer más
