Bound with the front and back blanks, the half-title and the integral four pages of ads (but not with the additional 16 pages of advertisements) in dark burgundy morocco, decorated in gilt and blind; all edges gilt; raised bands and gilt decorations in compartments; titled in gilt “Poe’s Tales.” Later bookplate; the original owner’s name, J.A. Cassedy, is gilt stamped at the bottom of the front inner dentelle; his 1856 Ohio pencil owner’s inscription on the half-title confirms that this was bound in America not long after the book’s publication. London: Smith, Elder, 1847. First Edition; three volumes; publisher’s cloth; the fly-title of the publisher’s catalogue is dated June, 1847 and the catalogue itself is dated October, 1847. This set has the very uncommon “Calcutta Review” ad inserted (while copies lacking it are not considered incomplete, it is preferable to include it); complete with the half-titles in each volume. This set is in what might be termed, for a book so seldom seen in its original binding, in usual condition; in this instance, this standard is not a high one. Overall, this set is in the shabbier side of good condition. Unlike many of the few sets that have surfaced in cloth, it has not been rebacked, but it has undergone modest cloth mending; there is cloth staining and numerous, but generally minor, paper repairs to small chips and tears. First Edition of this folio reproducing work in the artist’s self-produced 1892 retrospective exhibition; consisting of 24 mounted photographs of the artist’s paintings, varying in size, but mostly 8 x 10” or a little smaller, mounted individually on stiff leaves approximately 15” wide x 25 tall”; bound in (contemporary or original) 1/2 morocco and cloth (minor wear) and floral endpapers; with a title page and a list of the titles following the photographs. Each work has been signed by the artist, “Whistler” and with his butterfly device on the leaf near the mounted photograph. Reportedly, only a small number of these signed volumes were prepared and successfully sold. Aside from minor dust soiling of the edges and slight bumping at the foot of the spine, the book is as fine and bright as one might expect from the more than one hundred years of protection afforded by the jacket, which is virtually free of wear and has slight dust soiling to the spine of the dust jacket,

Paris: Shakespeare & Co., 1922. First Edition; one of 750 numbered copies (this is no. 843; the special issues of 100 and 150 were also numbered). Original publisher’s wrappers. Minor rubbing and soiling of the wrappers; a little short of fine, but an excellent, unrestored copy. Never having read this effusively praised and influential book, this cataloguer will refrain from plagiarizing those who are actually familiar with it. In a custom clamshell box.

About 65 words, entirely in Darwin’s hand; with ink corrections; the text is slightly different than that in the published text. This ms. leaf is tipped into a copy of The Life and Letters of Charles Darwin, Including an Autobiographical Chapter. Edited by His Son Francis Darwin. London: John Murray, 1887. First Edition; three volumes; bound in 3/4 leather and marbled paper boards by Bickers & Son, Leicester. Very minor wear and spotting. On the first blank, prior to the tipped-in leaf, it is inscribed “Good Wishes for the welfare of the Germantown Hospital. Francis Darwin, Feb 6, 1900.” Below it is inscribed by his brother, The annexed paper is from the M.S of Insectivorous Plants. Feb. 6 1900. G.H. Darwin.” Just below, George has endorsed it at Haverford [Pennsylvania] on April 16, 1906, also signing the verso of the leaf, which bears his calculations, “(mathematical work by G.H. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. First American Edition; preceded slightly by the English edition, although this edition has numerous additions to that text. Publisher’s green cloth; stamped in gilt and in blind; first binding, although this cataloguer has never seen either of the later two bindings in the wild. Some fading and wear; foxed (as seems inevitable); faded contemporary owner’s inscription on the front free endpaper; bookplate of author and collector Carolyn Wells. The final 50 or so leaves are marginally waterstained at the lower corners, far from any text; bottom corners of the three advertising leaves slightly chipped, likewise not near any printing. Overall, a good copy of a book often found repaired, rebacked, restored or otherwise suffering from previous owners’ good or bad intentions. In a custom quarter-morocco clamshell box (corners frayed).

Paris: J. Hetzel, n.d. [1863]. First Edition; first printing of the author’s first book (with all first printing points called for, including the proper wording on the title page and the various misnumbered or unnumbered pages). Publisher’s quarter morocco and pebble-grained cloth binding; spine gilt-decorated; all edges gilt; ribbon marker. Tiny bookplate inside the front cover; minor discoloration of the endpapers; an unusually fine copy. This adventure novel of exploration in unknown Africa confused the reading public of France with its plausible story and contemporary travel book style. It was, of course, fiction and the maiden effort of a former attorney, stockbroker and unsuccessful playwright. Verne’s story of an imaginary balloon voyage was almost certainly influenced by Poe, and elements of the story, which, strictly speaking, are not truly fantasy or science fiction, anticipate those works of his that are. Some cloth soiling and wear; some old, hardly noticeable mending to the front endpaper; very good in a custom clamshell box. Presentation copy; inscribed by Wells with two drawings, “[drawing of a fireplace and a chair and a steaming bowl] To J. Maclaren Cobban, from H.G. Wells [drawing of a small figure - presumably Wells - with a bowl labeled ‘GRUEL’] When they were both ill. 1898.” Cobban was primarily a novelist of adventure and fantasy fiction, and was also a contributor to the Strand Magazine. Inscribed copies of the Wells “scientific romances” are especially scarce.

First Edition; first printing; second state (correcting misprints); covers spotted; some cloth wear; half of rear free endpaper torn out; just a good copy in a supplied very good dust jacket with the price stamped on the front flap in the smaller of the two sizes (no priority is established); in a custom clamshell box. Presentation copy, humorously and, very possibly, drunkenly inscribed by the author, “For Shirley Chidsey, These tales of our life in Tahiti and the Maori Jungle From her friend F. Scott (’Nordoff[sic]-and-Hall’). Jan 1st 1899.” The recipient was the wife of novelist Donald Barr Chidsey, some of whose work was set in the South Seas. Shirley Chidsey (later Bridgwater) worked in publishing her entire career, and lived in Tahiti for three years, working closely with the authors while editing Nordhoff and Hall’s Bounty Trilogy. No place of publication (presumably Culver City, California): MGM (presumably), [1934]. Approximately overall 29 1/2 x 39 1/2”; framed and glazed. An illustration board has been titled in black lettering “Stars of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios send Greetings to Jack Flynn,” and has 23 oval cut-outs, each about 5 x 3/1/2,” with photos of their stars, each of which has been signed (some inscribed) in ink (a little faded) on the mat under their pictures. This was prepared for a convention in Chicago of executives and distributors touting the coming season’s releases (an occasion for which MGM produced a short promotional film “MGM’s March On In 1934-1935”). Flynn, who appeared briefly in this film, was one of the company’s important distributors. Presumably, given that he was in management, it is unlikely that few, if any, similarly lavish gifts were provided to other attendees. Burroughs’ grand-daughter has inscribed the front free endpaper, identifying this as her mother’s copy, given to her by E.R.B. In a custom clamshell box.

Original gilt-lettered blue cloth portfolio (one ribbon tie lacking), 13 x 11 inches, enclosing nineteen albumen print photographs on original mounts, seventeen of which are titled in pencil in a 19th c. hand on verso, and one of which has a printed title on recto and verso (image size varies; approx. 9 x 7 inches). [With]: Great Reduction in Prices. Gustav Fagersteen, for Seven Summers in Yo Semite Valley [trade card], formerly mounted inside the rear cover of the portfolio; Currey & Kruska 109. Exceptionally important and poignant association copies, each inscribed by the Queen to John Brown. Volume I is inscribed, “To John Brown Esqr from his faithful and grateful friend Victoria R, Windsor Castle, Dec. 14, 1874.” Volume 1 is inscribed, “To John Brown in recollection of the 15th of October 1858 from his faithful friend Victoria R & I. Balmoral, Oct. 15, 1876.” The third volume is inscribed, “To John Brown Esq from his faithful friend V R & I. Windsor Castle. Dec. 8, 1877.” From the library of Roger Fulford, editor of several volumes of Queen Victoria’s letters. Born on a Scottish farm, Brown was employed at Balmoral and his service was apparently transfered along with the other property in the estate purchased by Victoria and Albert. First few leaves a little wrinked; rubbed; very good in a chipped dust jacket, but an important association copy, inscribed to a cast member, “To Vito, Xmas, 1947. Tennessee.” Vito Christi played “A Young Collector” in the original production, which opened Dec. 3, 1947, a little over three weeks before this book was inscribed. In a custom quarter-morocco clamshell box.

Paper laid down on board; 8 1/2 x 11”; very minor stains; excellent condition; framed and glazed. Drawn from the perspective of the interior of a pet shop, the owner talking to a woman with three typical Thurber dogs in the window, the “stuffed” dog looks every bit as natural as the other two. First published in The New Yorker, March 7, 1936 and collected in Thurber’s Dogs (1955), this is one of the artist and writer’s best drawings on what was his favorite subject.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1940. First Edition. Front hinge cracked; very good in a good to very good dust jacket with wear and tear; in a custom clamshell box. An important volume; animator Robert “Tiger” West’s copy. A holograph note, signed by West as “Tiger” is laid in, describing how he drew for the film, purchasing this copy at Disney Studios and noting “it is enhanced by personal drawings made by many great animator directors of that era...” There are several inscriptions and over twenty drawings (most in color) by those who worked on the film, the best known of whom is probably Ward Kimball. West, who passed away in 2006, enjoyed a long career in animation, particularly with his involvement in Xerox cartoon processing.

London: Heinemann, 1940. First Edition. Spine very slightly cocked; pages a little yellowed as is inevitable; close to fine in a dust jacket with very light wear and some tiny chips.

Dating from July 31, 1944 - July 5, 1945, typed single space (one letter is typed at one and a half spaces) on thin, air mail paper. Three of the letters are two pages, and the rest are one page each. One letter is signed “Dash,” and the rest in pen and in pencil as “SDH.” There are a few small corrections in Hammett’s hand and an occasional note in Mrs. Whitfield’s, who was married to Hammett’s friend and hard-boiled writing colleague, Raoul Whitfield. The letters reflect Hammett’s warm, intimate feelings for the recipient, and are mostly filled with cheery chat and stories of idle, lonely army life. “I’ve been half-seriously monkeying with the notion of doing --or trying --a longish poem that would be called ‘The Aleutians Don’t Give A Damn’...This notion too...will likely as not be put away in the drawer marked Projects thought up in the absence of women, which is already pretty full...Tonight I’m going to treat myself to a tub bath, the first in about fifteen months,… Leer más
