Overall, the contents remain tightly-bound and in remarkably good condition. Vol. I complete but for The List of Plates (pp. xci to xcvi - however, included in the fourth volume - see below), and all seven maps on six plates (four folding), and one folding plate, are present. Vol. II complete with all eleven maps or views (six folding). Vol. III shows an early worm hole to the first few pages, not affecting text. All six maps and plates are present (two folding), plus the folding table at the end, but with no advertising leaf included. Typed captions below most photographs, and a few handwritten corrections/additions. An engaging and delightful album of personal snapshots of canoe trips through Northern Quebec, 1911-1913. Typed captions pasted-in include information such as locations, dates, names, and the photographer's relationship to the subjects. Many depictions of Indigenous peoples, their settlements, families, activities, and homes, including "Indian Women", "Indian Burial Ground in the Wilderness"; "Indian Family Summer Camp"; an "Indian Cache in the Wilderness"; the content of the captions and ease of the subjects suggesting a friendly and familiar relationship with the photographer (ex. This is the first printing, first state, of the famous account of what is now described as 'Cook's First Voyage', although primary credit for the creation of this account is given to John Hawkesworth (who had been commissioned by the Admiralty to edit Capt. Cook's papers). Note: there was a second edition published in the same year, containing a Preface by Hawkesworth (Beddie 650). Volume I of our offering ends at page 676, and shows page 139 as numbered 139-360 (as called for in Beddie 648). It contains 18 of the 21 charts and plates called for in this volume, lacking two charts and one plate (or 'cut' as it is called). Oxford: John Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, 1717. Leather Bound. Folio. Measures 52 x 34 x 14 cm. Bound in leather, likely late 19th century. Binding split at rear joint. Some damage to text block, especially prelims; a few loose pages, some chips and tears, foxing, some pages darkened. Three batches of restoration are evident, the most recent carefully documented, a fourth round required. Herbert 942A: "A magnificent edition, printed in large type. With many plates at the beginning and end of books, engraved on steel from the designs of various artists. Some of the initial letters are similarly engraved. Unfortunately the book contained many misprints, and earned the nickname 'A Baskett-ful of Errors'... Wagner-Camp notes that 'Mackenzie discovered the river that now bears his name, and descended it to the Arctic Ocean in 1789. In 1793, he became the first European to cross the North American continent north of Mexico'. Peel 55: "After the preface there follow 132 pages on the history of the fur trade in the North West. Some authorities think this was written by his cousin, Roderick MacKenzie. According to the Dictionary of National Biography , Voyages , 1801, was compiled by William Combe from Mackenzie's notes. Amsterdam: Zacherie Chatelain, 1737. Leather Bound. Tall folio. Bound in full contemporary calf, with seven raised bands and the spine ornamented in gilt. The binding shows minor wear but is otherwise strong and the contents are in remarkable condition. There is an elaborate engraved plate preceding the formal title page (printed in red and black). Measures 47 x 29.5 cms. Zacherie Chatelain (d.1723) was the father of Henri Abraham (1684-1743) and Zacherie Junior (1690-1754). They worked as a partnership publishing this atlas under several different Chatelain imprints, depending on the Chatelain family partnerships at the time of publication. The original atlas was published in seven volumes between 1705 and 1720, with a second edition appearing in 1732. The maps were accompanied by information pertaining to cosmography, geography, history, chronology, genealogy, topography, heraldry, and costume of the world. London: Pearson's Magazine, 1897. 1st edition. Leather Bound. black-&-white illustrations. 85 pp. Slim 8vo. Handsomely bound in 3/4 reddish-brown niger morocco over reddish-brown cloth, t.e.g. The five parts are bound without any preliminary leaves, containing 85 pages from the magazine. The binding is by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, of London. The spine is in compartments with delicate gilt lettering and the date 1896-7 at bottom. The leather of the front board is a bit spotted, more so near the top than elsewhere, and the top of the hinge is rubbed. The boards are also slightly bumped. The front free endpaper shows some scuffing. There are four small spots to the rear endpaper, of no particular consequence. The contents are generally clean, if slightly edge-worn. Overall, the book is in very good condition, in a most attractive binding. Martindell 68. Written when Kipling was but 31, and not long married to the sister of his American agent, this is his only book to be set entirely in America. This… Leer más

London: James and John Knapton et al., 1722. Hardcover. Maps, engravings. Folio. Two large volumes, in original full leather bindings. Title pages are printed in red and black, with an elegant full-page copper engraving of Camden as the frontispiece of the first volume. There are 50 double-page maps of the English counties, Ireland, Scotland, and 'the Islands'; six of the maps are folding. There are also twelve large full-page engravings, and numerous smaller engravings in the text. There is a comprehensive index and the errata page is present. A previous owner has reinforced the hinges with linen-like binding tape. The boards are quite worn and rubbed, but a competent bookbinder could restore both bindings. The contents are remarkable clean, with only occasional foxing, and a few stained pages. The maps, by the cartographer Robert Morden, and which are usually removed and sold individually, are all in excellent condition. Overall, a good set. All 43 plates are present, as described in Smith, 'Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth', although five of the plates are placed one page earlier than called for, and one plate is placed ten pages later. Seven of the plates are by Seymour, two by Buss, and the remainder by Phiz. Vignette title page plate shows 'S. Veller' and 'Phiz fecit'. As is always the case with a bound first edition of this title, each of the plates is a 'mixed bag' of first state, first plate, second plate etc. varieties of the plates. Our copy contains at least 33 'matches' to the status of plates found in most first edition copies, as stipulated by Smith; but it also contains 10 plates where the points are different, the majority of the differences suggesting a first plate, first state status. Contemporary calf over reverse-bevelled wooden panel, with plain spine showing 5 prominent raised bands, and remains of clasps to foredge. Copious (family history) notes to front pastedown, some tide marks, closed tears, and the like throughout; p. 173 of NT shows corner torn off and laid in, last page tattered and only laid-in with some loss to edges; binding remarkably sound, text complete but end-matter and front free endpaper missing. Complete, and retaining 102 of the 105 plates (missing 30, 43, 66), plus engraved title. 4to (33 cm). Hand-lettered vellum spine, over raw boards (covering material having fallen by the wayside with the exception of a few fragments here and there). Boards heavily worn, some tattering, engraved title laid-in loose, a handful of plates are on paper wider than the text block which has caused the edges to be a bit tattered, occasional worming and spotting, but clean and bright overall, text block sturdy and sound. Generously illustrated with engravings, presumably the more exotic created from descriptions, in that they are not *quite* right but more or less accurate: i.e. a heavily anthropomorphised elephant face, a camel with more of a tuft than a hump, and some proportional inaccuracies, which lend no small amount of charm… Leer más

We offer for sale a collection of the works of the famous 19th century novelist and poet, Charles Kingsley (1819-1875). This collection contains 29 individual titles; being Kingsley's prose works, most of his sermons, and all but one of his books of poetry. Each volume was uniformly bound for the noted British bibliophile, Francis Frederick Fox, in handsome 3/4 polished calf over marbled boards, with the top edge gilt, and the endpapers marbled. On the spine of each volume are three coloured leather labels, the first (top) of which states 'Kingsley's Works', the second (middle) stating the title of the individual volume, and the third (bottom) stating the year of publication. The armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox is either inserted as a cancel leaf, or the bookplate is tipped-in. Martha Griffith Browne (also known as Mattie Griffith) was a white woman who, prior to her conversion to abolitionism, had owned slaves. She wrote sketches and poems for 'The National Anti-Slavery Standard', before writing this fictionalized slave narrative in 1856. 'Autobiography of a Female Slave' is one of several noteworthy antebellum novels about slavery that were written by abolitionist authors. In some cases these novels reflected the storytelling style and conventions of the slave narrative so convincingly that they were mistaken for actual autobiographies of former slaves.
