Very scarce. The 2nd Pulitzer prize winner in very, very rare dust jacket. Desired by collectors of Pulitzer Prize winners. Also sought after by collectors of books into film. Orson Welles famously filmed Magnificent Ambersons right after Citizen Kane and what remains of it makes many think it might have been an even better film, before the studio took it from him and butchered it.

There are 2 other versions of this dust jacket with prices of $1.40 and $1.50. The lower priced jacket is often considered the first state of the jacket, but it is uncertain. And it is reasonable to presume the unpriced jacket preceded the others. As covered in the December 2010 edition of Firsts magazine.

St. Joseph, MO: Combe Printing Company, n.d. (1894). Rare. Adams Six-guns 574; Dustin 86; Flake 2743; Graff 1035; Howes D183; Rader 1090. Very nearly the entire edition was lost in a flood, quoting Huntington No. 231. Streeter V-3090, which repeats the flood destruction.
Original blue cloth binding with red, black, and gilt lettering and decoration. Title page and author illustration plate detached and tipped in. Some other pages coming unbound but holding for now. Spine darkened and wear at extremities. While a mail carrier in Montana, Frank Grouard was captured by the Sioux, During the six years he was with them he learned their language and was familiar with Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. Grouard served as a scout for Gen. Crook during the Sioux Campaign of 1876. The author relates not only the personal experiences of Grouard but also his account of events such as the Battle of the Little Bighorn as told to Grouard by participants.

Publisher's crimson cloth, t.e.g. rubbed, fore-tips worn, some darkening at edges of prelims and terminal leaves, still a sound copy, internally very good. First edition in this format, with illustrations by Frank M. Gregory. One of 150 numbered copies, printed on handmade paper, and signed by the publishers. Illustrated with five full-page designs in watercolors, reproduced by the Photo-Aquarelle process, and black and white illustrations and plates printed from photographic electrotypes made in Vienna and Paris. The black and white illustrations are printed on Japanese tissue and mounted in the text. Quite worn. See photos.
