Typescript includes author's copious holograph edits, amendments, additions, and excisions in ink, throughout. Housed in a green custom chemise and slipcase with titles stamped in gilt on the spine: "Beau James | Early Draft | Gene Fowler | Jane Fowler". The cloth bound case is torn on the top and bottom edges. The second manuscript are unrevised galley proofs from Viking Press. The Viking Press Galley proofs are housed in a brick cloth custom chemise slip case (approx. 14.5" x 8") with gilt-stamped morocco spine label on the spine. The book resulting from these drafts, Beau James: The Life and Times of Jimmy Walker (NY: Viking Press, 1949), was a highly romanticized hagiography of James J. Knoxville: Printed for the Author by Heiskell & Brown, 1823. First Edition. Full calf. Good. Octavo. [1], 504 pages. Marbled brown calf leather binding with red leather title label. It appears a front blank end sheet or the half title page was removed. The preface page is present and precedes page 1. Earlier repairs made to the binding with hinges very tight and the leather very smooth. The outer joints appear to have been strengthened. Leather is worn and chipped on the edges and spine. Moderate toning to the text. Old damp stains to the first 90 pages. Rear end sheet coming loose. Presentation copy. An old inscription written on the right front flyleaf (difficult to transcribed) reads "Presented to the Eroalethian? Society by H L Spencer March 17th 1853". Similar faint pencil inscription written on the front paste down. A cornerstone of Tennessee History. Cleveland: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Quartos. 3 volumes: [1], 394 pages, [1]; 403 pages; 419 pages. All volumes illustrated. Red cloth hardcovers with gilt titles on the spines. Gilt top edges. Untrimmed foredges. Volume 1 has a thin, light dried water stain on the front cover and a small dried water stain at the top edge of the text block. A few pages in front of volume 1, including the title page, have dried water stains at the top edge. Cloth spine on volume 3 is light faded. Bindings are very sturdy and contents are very clean with the exception of the few pages mentioned in volume 1. Frontispiece map of volume 1 shows how the Indian Territory appeared in 1861. This comprehensive study took a decade to complete with fewer copies of volume 3 printed. Although this set is widely held in institutions it is scarce in the trade. Howes A 9. Ellis Gray Loring was an attorney from Massachusetts, an Abolitionist, and one of the founders of the New England Anti-Slavery Society.
