Typescript includes author's copious holograph edits, amendments, additions, and excisions in ink, throughout. Housed in a green custom chemise and slipcase with titles stamped in gilt on the spine: "Beau James | Early Draft | Gene Fowler | Jane Fowler". The cloth bound case is torn on the top and bottom edges. The second manuscript are unrevised galley proofs from Viking Press. The Viking Press Galley proofs are housed in a brick cloth custom chemise slip case (approx. 14.5" x 8") with gilt-stamped morocco spine label on the spine. The book resulting from these drafts, Beau James: The Life and Times of Jimmy Walker (NY: Viking Press, 1949), was a highly romanticized hagiography of James J. Volume one is bound in drab green cloth with leather title label on the spine. Volumes II, III, IV, and V are bound in three quarter Moroccan leather with marbled paper covered boards. Raised bands and gilt lettered title labels on the spines. Top edges gilt. Leather is rubbed and scuffed on the edges,and raised bands. Marbled end papers for volumes 2-5. A variety of the pamphlets are illustrated. In volume 1 is an inscription from father to son - "To my son Wallace Jr with my most sincere good wishes and affection [signed] Wallace W Atwood June 7, 1928." This collection is most likely one of a kind and possibly compiled by Wallace Atwood for binding. Publisher's light blue mesh cloth, titles and illustration on upper board and spine, spine titles a bit rubbed out, spine tips and corners gently rubbed, but generally a bright, sharp copy; the scarce and fragile jacket is soiled with a few chips, creases, short tears, enclosed in a custom cloth sheath with a gilt-embossed morrocco spine label. With a former bookseller description laid in. Inscribed on the FFEP, "Gladly inscribed for Mr. Slocum, Booth Tarkington." Myles Standish Slocum (1887-1956) was a noted book collector, descended directly from Myles Standish on one side and from John Carter Brown on the other.

Wraps rebound in later marbled paper covered boards with black leather corners and spine. Gilt stamped title on the spine. Title on the spine faded. Light toning to the text. Light edge wear to the boards. Watts preaches, "If ever, therefore, there was in reality a Colony, what it should be by description, a refuge to the Poor, an Ease and security to the Rich, a nursery of people, and a supply of necessaries, a reward to the deserving, and a reformation to the disorderly; This, of all others, seems most likely to answer such a character." Scarce sermon preached just two years after James Oglethorpe landed in Savannah, Georgia. Rare. 7 copies of this sermon located in OCLC. Binding is a later half morocco leather binding with brownish cloth covered boards. 5 raised bands and title in gilt on the spine. Later dark green end papers. Some scuffing to the edges of the spine and boards. The title page has a light crease and light edge wear. Light occasional foxing to the contents. Map and lithographic view in very good condition. Author promotes East Tennessee as a good place for manufacturing and farming and offers advice to the capitalist. He also provides his opinions on the Native Americans and African Americans. First edition, with the missing apostrophe on the title page of Vol. 1 and the double rule in blind on the rear board. Volume 1 lacking the top inch of the spine cloth, both hinges cracked but holding; Volume 2 with the spine head perished, Volume 3 with the rear hinge starting, and signature "M" loosening; all volumes quite scuffed and dust-soiled, with corners and edges worn. Scarce in the original cloth.

It appears a front blank end sheet or the half title page was removed. The preface page is present and precedes page 1. Earlier repairs made to the binding with hinges very tight and the leather very smooth. The outer joints appear to have been strengthened. Leather is worn and chipped on the edges and spine. Moderate toning to the text. Old damp stains to the first 90 pages. Rear end sheet coming loose. Presentation copy. An old inscription written on the right front flyleaf (difficult to transcribed) reads "Presented to the Eroalethian? Society by H L Spencer March 17th 1853". Red cloth hardcovers with gilt titles on the spines. Gilt top edges. Untrimmed foredges. Volume 1 has a thin, light dried water stain on the front cover and a small dried water stain at the top edge of the text block. A few pages in front of volume 1, including the title page, have dried water stains at the top edge. Cloth spine on volume 3 is light faded. Bindings are very sturdy and contents are very clean with the exception of the few pages mentioned in volume 1. Frontispiece map of volume 1 shows how the Indian Territory appeared in 1861.
