An excellent early war-date letter, written less than a month before Jackson's valor at the First Battle of Manassas would earn him immortality. General Jackson was in command of a brigade of newly enlisted Virginia infantry recruits that would soon become known as The Stonewall Brigade. He writes to a neighbor in Lexington: "Mrs Jackson told me that you had the kindness to offer to take care of my wheat and oats, if I would but indicate how I desired it should be done. I don't know if it is worth gathering: but if so, please dispose of it as though it were your own." Mounted on a photographer's mat with the gilt imprint of Brady's Washington studio, autograph presentation endorsement on the verso by Confederate General Gilbert Moxley Sorrel. "The finest portrait of General Lee and Brady's best effor": a fine veignette portrait of the great general. Lee is facing left. This is one of three portraits made by Brady during Lee's brief visit to Washington in 1869, during which he had a breif interview at the White House with his former adversary the President Ulysses S. Grant. Five bound volumes of the complete issues for the years 1861-1865. Contents in excellent condition. The bindings show some light to moderate wear to the exterior boards but remain sturdy and tight. Harper's Weekly was the most widely read journal in the United States throughout the period of the Civil War. So as not to upset its wide readership in The South, Harper's took a moderate editorial position on the issue of slavery prior to the outbreak of the war. The Weekly had supported the candidacy of Stephen A. Douglas in the 1860 presidential campaign against Abraham Lincoln, but as the American Civil War broke out, it fully supported Lincoln and the Union. A July 1863 article on the escaped slave Gordon included a photograph of his back, severely scarred from whippings; this provided many readers in the North their first visual evidence of the brutality of slavery. Now page on unmarked light brown paper to Ben Weissman. In part: " My own politics are exactly as they were in Spain. As a writer, after the war is over.I have to write things as I see them if we are to profit by our mistakes.In the end I think the writing straight will be the most valuable thing I can do." In this highly interesting letter Hemingway refers to Gustav Regler who served in the German Infantry during the First World War and was seriously injured. He joined the Communist Partyand spent time in the USSR. He later served as political commissar of the II International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. In Spain he befriended Ernest Hemingway and was wounded at the Battle of Guadalajara. Hemingway mentions in this letter that he wrote the introduction to Regler's book "The Great Crusade." One of 250, this one SIGNED BY TRUMAN ON THE LIMITATION PAGE AND INSCRIBED TO MATTHEW CONNELLY BENEATH THE FRONTISPIECE: "To a grand man and loyal public servant. Wish we had more like him/Harry Truman". Connelly was the chief investigator for the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, known as the Truman Committee. He subsequently became Executive Assistant to Senator Truman and later as appointments secretary was a close and trusted aide to the President. His reputation was of a no-nonsense, poker-faced man who knew how to get things done. He was convicted in 1956 for accepting a bribe and eventually served six months in federal prison. Washington, D.C.,, 1902. As President to Edward North Buxton, on White House stationery, tipped to the rear flyleaf of Buxton's book Two African Trips. Buxton was a noted British politician and an ardent conservationist which explains Roosevelt's admiration and friendship. T.R. writes: "I have been delighted with your book. You are one of the most potent among the teachers and pioneers in the movement which will make the lover of big game and of the wilderness an instrument against, instead of in favor of, the destruction of both. As I grow older I do not lose my taste for hunting, and I think my fondness for the wilderness increases; but I certainly disbelieve more and moe in butchery. I have taken the liberty of sending you a copy of a volume to which I contributed in which you will see that I preach somewhat the same doctrine. One page, in German, with an integral blank leaf; Lucerne, 1872 April 13, to the noted bass-baritione Karl Hill. Hill was an eccentric and difficult artist with a rather unsavory reputation . Nevertheless Wagner was seriously thinking of engaging him having heard from friends that his artistry was of the highest caliber. This letter concerns Wagner's desire to engage him for the upcoming premier of 'The Ring of the Niebelung" in Bayreuth. Wagner writes: "I know you well enough by reputation to have thought seriously about using you in my projected performance. I am planning next fall and winter to review all the availble musical and mimetic resources, for which I have had no time in recent years....If I did not know you, I should have had to go to my old friend Betz in Berlin who has already agreed to sing the baritone solo at Beethoven's 9th Symphony...". A very interesting letter inviting Bryant and the AMA to participate in a Forthcoming conference on the Conservation of Natural Resources an important issue for TR. In part: " Recently I invited the Governors of the States and Territories to meet in the White House on May 13-15 next in a conference on the Conservation of Natural Resources. In issuing the invitation, I exprest the opinion that there is urgent need of taking stock of our resources, and I added my belief that the conference ought to rank among the more important meetings in the history of the country..." Together with the original typed draught of Bryant's post conference report to President Roosevelt. Some light soiling and adhesion mark remnants on blank verso.
