New York: Henry Frank, 1854. Hardback. 1st edition. Period-style gilt tooled Morocco leather. 12mo, various pagination (aprox 475 pages total) . Singerman 1285, Goldman 40. The first Ashkenazi machzor printed in America. Based upon the celebrated Wolf Heidenheim edition, Henry (Chaim) Frank of New York published in 1854 2 prayer-books for the Days of Awe: This volume for the New Year, as well as a volume for Yom Kipur. He issued this set following the Polish tradition and, simultaneously, a set following the German tradition. This enabled the newly rising community of Central European Jews to conduct services according to their own custom, as opposed to that of the Sephardic rite. Frank went on in later years to issue other volumes for other Holidays. A set (New Year and Yom Kipur) of the German tradition set with repairs sold at auction for over $17,000 with commissions in 2012. No copies from the Polish set have ever appeared at major Auction. New Year's Volume has Hebrew title page 1/7 in original… Leer más

1860. Photo. Large, albumen carte-de-visite photograph. 2.25 x 3.5 inch (photograph) on 3 x 5 inch period CDV card. Photographer's copyprint below: "PECK / 78 Water St. / Newburgh, N.Y." New York, c., 1860's. (printed after Noah's Death)This larger format carte-de-visite of an elderly Mordecai Manuel Noah, is similar to both known images of him as an older man (one a painting, one a daguerreotype). Noah's life spanned from 1785-1851, hence photographs of him are naturally, so very scarce. Only one surviving photograph of Noah is known; a daguerreotype, currently located in the Houghton Library, Harvard University, see https://iiif.lib.harvard.edu/manifests/view/ids:262348$1i. The present unrecorded photograph is very similar to the painting of Noah as reproduced in the 1905 Jewish Encyclopedia. Indeed it is possible that our CDV was the basis for this well-known painting. See https://jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/11573-noah-mordecai-manuel.The photograph records the photographer's name: Peck, of… Leer más

New York, Printed by Thalmessinger & Cahn, 1863. Hardback. 2nd Revised Edition, edited, revised, and corrected by S. Adler, 1st printing thus. Original gilt tooled leather, 8vo, 396 pages. In Hebrew and English on facing pages. Formerly Singerman 1780, now merged into Singerman 1667 as vol II, variant 1 (Thalmessinger & Cahn). The second of two volumes [vol. 1 Daily prayers & vol. 2. Prayers for the Day of Atonement] substantially reworked by Adler and published 1860 (vol. I) and 1863 (vol. 2, here). Together these comprise the First Edition of Samuel Adler's revised edition of Leo Merzbacher's 1855 Prayer-Book. The first prayer-book to contain an English rather than German translation of the prayers. Despite the modest title-page, Adler's production here was not merely a revision, but in actuality he completely reworked it and added to and entirely altered the liturgy. Rabbi Leo Merzbacher's original version of the prayers was quite traditional. "As resourceful and accomplished a liturgist as… Leer más

Charleston, S. C. : Levin & Tavel, 1841. 1st American Edition, Original Publisher's Cloth, Small 8vo, [2] 236 pages, followed by several unnumbered pages of publisher's advertisements. Singerman 0761, Rosenbach 483. Jacob Rader Marcus, the dean of historians of American Jewish history, suggests in his work, UNITED STATES JEWRY, 1776-1985 (Detroit, 1989) that "The motive that prompted Nathaniel Levin and a Charleston associate to reprint an English translation of the sermons of Gotthold Salomon was apologetic....The book was Twelve Sermons Delivered in the New Temple of the Israelites at Hamburgh. (The Hamburg temple in Germany was a liberal Jewish synagog, one of the first in Europe.) An English translation had been made of the sermons at London in 1839 by Anna Maria Goldsmid, the daughter of Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, the Anglo-Jewish emancipator and religious liberal. The American reprint [this edition] appeared two years later. Both editions were intended, not only to edify Jews, but also to… Leer más

Descripción:
[New York], Unknown, 1866. Broadsie. First edition. Original beautifully illustrated broadside showing the hospital and with important names of hospital directors and committees. Mounted and framed in a wooden frame. Picture 11x16.5 cm, frame 22x28. Broadside page appears to be from an event related to the official re-naming of the Jews' Hospital in New York to Mount Sinai Hospital. Jews' Hospital (later famously renamed as Mount Sinai Hospital) was founded in 1852 by Sampson Simson (1780-1857) to address the needs of New York's rapidly growing Jewish community. At the time, New York City hospitals often discriminated against Jews - refusing them treatment as patients as well as blocking the hiring of Jewish medical staff. The Jews' Hospital in the City of New York, as it was initially called, inaugurated its first building in 1855, in what was then a rural neighborhood on West 28th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues on land donated by Simson. Just a short few years later the 45-bed hospital… Leer más

2006. Hardcover. 8vo; Full leather, 14 x 21 cm, 160 pp + commentary. Unbelievably rich and extraordinarily refined in its artistic decoration, the Prato Hagadah was produced in Spain around 1300 C.E., with incomplete period illuminations and then with additions from the following three centuries. Folios 1-53 are in square Sephardic script, while folios 54-68 display a square Italo-Ashkenazic script. The hagadah includes 40 miniatures illuminated in gold and silver and 60 which are partially illuminated or only drawn. The Hagadah was featured in the Met's 2009 Exhibit, "Pen and Parchment: Drawing in the Middle Ages." Scholars at JTSA note that, "Nothing at all is known of either the patron or scribe of the Prato Haggadah, and little is known of its whereabouts from the time it was produced in Spain, around 1300, until the time it was acquired by the JTS Library in 1964. While the haggadah's text is written in accordance with the Spanish rite, at some point additional text, which included liturgical… Leer más

Title translates to "The New Life. " The complete first three years of this important Yiddish monthly. Zhitlowsky, an immigrant socialist revolutionary, sought to synthesize socialism with nationalism as early as 1883. He demanded for Jews "national equal rights with all peoples" and asserted that only through the Yiddish language could the social and national revival of the Jewish people be effected. He maintained that one could remain identified with the Jewish nationality even if abandoning the Jewish religion. He urged the Jewish masses to participate in the class struggle as a national unit. Alone among the cosmopolitan Jewish socialists he favored national socialism. In 1897 he began publishing philosophical studies in Jewish history and a comprehensive program of action which later appeared in book form as Pisma o starom I… Leer más

Descripción:
No Place (Washington?), 1860. No Date (1860) 1st edition. No cover, as issued, with simple caption title at top, 8vo, 32 pages. The first Jew to serve in the U. S. Senate who did not renounce his Judaism, and future secretary of State for the Confederacy, Louisiana Senator Benjamin levels both barrels at Senator Stephen A. Douglas and his Popular Sovereignty doctrine. An important marker in the dismantling of the National Democratic Party. Signaling Southern repudiation of the Illinois Senator as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, Benjamin argues that the South will be satisfied only by guarantees for the protection of slavery-- regardless of popular feeling-- in the Territories. In the course of arraigning Douglas, Benjamin discusses in some detail the former's debates with Abraham Lincoln in the Illinois senatorial contest two years earlier (the famous the "Lincoln-Douglas Debates") . Sabin; 4701. SUBJECT(S) : Campaign literature -- United States. Slavery -- United States -- Extension… Leer más
