Gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Vignette illustration on title page. Text block clean and crisp. Various chapter decorations. Wanting the very rare folding plate which seems to be missing in most copies. Sabin 79343 After the 1577 English language version this is the earliest edition of Frobisher's voyage one can own. We have had the 1580 Latin Edition twice but have never handled this earlier version or seen one for sale before. Although missing the small folding plate of natives, it seems many copies do not have it or never had it bound in. This is a translation of the English edition by Nicholas Pithou, sieur de Cham-Gobert of the 1577 English edition. The Narrative consists of 32 leaves. NP, 1866- 1874. Oblong folio photo album. ( 46 X 36 cm.) Consists of deeply beveled morocco boards with blind and gilt decoration. Front board with the initials SEW stamped in the middle (crew members initials). Boards and spine are in wonderful condition considering the weight. The text block is complete and in very nice condition. There are 114 albumen views in total plus a page of 22 small oval portraits of the ships crew. Most images are 210 X 280 mm. with approximately 40 images 165 X 250 mm. There are also 8 very large images of 250 X 400 mm in size. The images for the most part are all in very nice clean clear unfaded condition. They are also mount 1 to 4 per page recto and verso. Other than the binding which could certainly be restored, in excellent condition. The HMS Zealous was one three ships which formed a group of wooden hulled battleships that were selected for conversion to ironclads in 1860. Text and plates are very clean and crisp. A very handsome copy. Neate F18. Meckly 71 Perret 1605. Fellows and Sir Benjamin Hawes made the 14th ascent of Mont Blanc in July of 1827. Boards are a bit mottled. Label on spine with a very small chip. Original endpapers. High quality facsimile of the very rare folding map on old paper to match the text, tipped in as a frontispiece. Five initial leaves with old marginal repairs in the bottom of the gutter. A few letters in expert facsimile. Text is evenly toned and has areas of more staining and browning. The paper is still supple and flexible. Overall a superior copy of a book never found in nice condition. Two preliminary leaves (index) and fifteen original manuscript leaves in various sizes. Each hinged into a window-mounted folder with explanatory printed captions identifying contents. Complete as issued. From the collection and notes prepared by Otto Ege. 14 leaves on paper and one (no. 7) on vellum. Some of the leaves are heighted in gold or with other illuminations, and two including musical notations. Fine as new copy. The leaves written between 12th and 18th centuries, twelve of the Middle East, two of Russia, and one of Tibet. Texts mostly covering religious contents represented in Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Ethiopic, Tibetian, Greek and Slavic and two pages of Persian poetry (no. 8 and 10). Front wrapper consists of the title and the rear wrapper contains the colophon. 8 large single leaves of Rives paper with a single fold in the middle. The Left hand side has a poem printed and the right hand side is a full page black and white lithographic illustration. Each one has the original tissue over the plate. The last plate is titled in pencil at the bottom. Overall a fine clean copy all housed in a fold over box. The box has warped over time but does not effect the contents. This is the very rare second book by Margaret Atwood, illustrated by Charles Pachter. Lecker and David A2. The edition was limted to 15 copies, hand signed by both on the colophon.
