His library was surely one of the most remarkable of his collections, and included the Très Riches Heures and the Belles Heures, both illustrated by the famous Limbourg Brothers, as well as the Grandes Heures, which is one of the most impressive works of its type.

Gilt-decorated full sheepskin, all edges gilt (now a little rubbed in the centre); small light-coloured area on an early blank; an excellent copy in the original cloth-bound book-form box (a little rubbed and marked, with light wear to a bottom edge). The box also contains a companion introductory volume (in German) by Luigi Michelini Tocci (octavo, 47 pages; cloth; in fine condition). A handsome facsimile edition of this small illuminated book of hours. The original, held by the Vatican Library, was produced around the year 1500; it is written in a French Gothic script and contains charming miniatures and decorations from several Flemish workshops. This is Volume 66 in the series 'Codices e Vaticanis selecti quam simillime expressi iussu Ioannis Pauli PP II concilio et opera curatorum Bibliothecae Vaticanae'. Each leaf with multiple one- to three-line initials, ALL WITH FULL METALCUT BORDERS on one side, incorporating vignettes and decorative designs, including the Dance of Death, and vining flowers and acanthus entwining animals and human figures, AND the other side of each leaf WITH A FULL-PAGE MINIATURE surrounded by an architectural border. Printed in red and black. ◆A little soiling in places and the occasional additional trivial imperfection, otherwise in fine condition. These leaves contain attractive full-page metalcut miniatures with highly desirable imagery, including the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Resurrection, the Three Dead, Betrayal, and Deposition, all executed with a fine degree of detail and attractive composition. Gorgeous original, hand-drawn leaf on parchment probably from a book of hours. 6 x 4 inches, attractively framed and matted. Dimensions in glass-fronted frame: 13 1/4 x 19 inches. No date, presumed to be circa late 15th - early 16th cent. 16 lines with painted border in gold and blue; 4 illuminated initials, the largest covering 4-lines.

France, ca. 1475. 165 x 112 mm. (6 1/2 x 4 3/8"). Single column, 16 lines in a gothic book hand. Kalends comprised of gray and white acanthus leaves accented with flowers on a background of brushed gold, saints' names in blue, red, or gold, month and Golden Numbers in burnished gold, days in alternating blue and burnished gold, five Dominical letters in burnished gold on a blue or red ground with white tracery, each side with a panel border featuring a brushed gold triangle with a spray of pink flowers, and WITH A ROUNDEL DEPICTING THE LABOR OF THE MONTH (RECTO) AND ASTROLOGICAL SIGN (VERSO), the background filled with blue and gold acanthus leaves and swirling hairline stems bearing leaves and gold berries. ◆Panel border with three small burn holes, four brown spots to the text, minor soiling to fore and head margins. Not as pretty as it could be, but an inexpensive example of a Book of Hours calendar leaf with miniatures. .

Venetiis: Apud Nicolaum Pezzana 1758, 1758. 8vo. (180x106mm) pp. [8], 405, [3]. Six engraved plates, one signed M. Heylbrouck and an engraved vignette to title page. Text in Latin and Italian. Contemporary Italian sheep, covers with elaborately tooled gilt borders, fan sprays at the inner corners. Centre of the boards have leaf motifs and two gilt oval frames with green morocco onlays bearing initials "G.P" (upper cover) and "A.P" (lower cover). Flat spine decorated in gilt with leaf motifs, with three green morocco onlays lettered and decorated in gilt. Edges to boards tooled in gilt. All edges gilt and gauffered with a delicate leaf pattern. Attractive green endpapers. In very good condition with one or two small worn spots. Internally excellent with a little foxing in places. Book label of John Saks loosely inserted along with a slip of paper from Christie's reading "Lot No. 191/1 10 Jun 1981" when a number of Saks's books were sold. Text in red, blue, and gold, "KL" in blue with white tracery and on a burnished gold ground and infilled with ivy leaves in blue, orange, and white, BOTH SIDES WITH A PANEL BORDER, EACH WITH A ROUNDEL DEPICTING THE ZODIAC SIGN AND LABOR OF THE MONTH, placed amidst a tangle of acanthus leaves in blue, red, and brushed gold. ◆Recto with a little general soiling, the roundel lightly abraided, and a noticeable smudge to the top of the panel border, but the verso quite clean with just a little discoloration to margins and the "KL" offset from facing page, the roundel on this side in excellent condition with just one or two very small scratches. Northeastern France, probably Arras, late 15th century. 146 x 95 mm. (5 3/4 x 3 3/4"). Single column, 15 lines in a pleasing bâtarde hand. Rubrics in red, one one-line initial in brushed gold on a red ground, EACH SIDE OF LEAF WITH A BRUSHED GOLD PANEL BORDER, WITH VERY PRETTY ILLUSIONISTIC FLOWERS; WITH ONE SMALL MINIATURE (measuring approximately 40 x 25 mm.) depicting God the Father. Headlines written in French in a later (18th century?) calligraphic hand. ◆Light soiling, rubrics faded, gold somewhat dulled, the frame around the miniature a bit chipped and the lower half the figure's face without paint (questionable as to whether this was a choice by the artist, as it rather resembles a white beard), but these issues mostly minor, and one the whole a very nice specimen, generally clean and smooth, with ample margins and bright color.
