Charming verse in 18th century nostalgic revival led by Dobson, a popular poet subsequently much maligned by the effete Sitwell clan.

This is actually a UK pressing with a leaf bound in, reading: ""This copy...is part of the first English Edition. The spine ends, bottom edges, and corners are a bit rubbed, the corners also bumped, the third signature is shaken, and there is light foxing throughout. It is otherwise an attractive copy.

With 50 illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Printed at the Chiswick Press, Charles Whittingham and Co. There are 3 pages of notes at the end of this copy. Line 6 of the poem on page (v) reads: "The long day lengthens," which according to Francis Edwin Murray is a peculiarity in the earliest issues of the first edition. In later issues, the line was replaced by: "Life's journey lengthens" although beginning in 1897 the original line was restored. [See pages 13-14, A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF AUSTIN DOBSON by Francis Edwin Murray]. The collation of this copy agrees with the Dobson bibliography by Alban Dobson (item XXIV), although he identifies only two bindings (ruby cloth and electric blue cloth).
