Front cover has an embossed image of an African tribesman. Spine is torn completely down back side and at ends, and is only attached along front edge, plus spine is torn some down middle. Corners of covers are bumped and worn, and edges are worn. First blank page has the words First edition, 1861 written on it. The next page has a name of a previous owner and the date (1861) written on it. Pages have some tanning, and some pages have some foxing and stains. The map of west equatorial Africa in back of book has some tears and wear along edges. Book is in acceptable condition. ; 1861; 9.5 X 6.75 X 1.7 inches; 531 pages .

Full black leather covers with raised spine bands and gilt stamped lettering. All edges of text block are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Inscribed and dated January 5th, 1901 on blank front fly leaf, wishing the recipient a Happy married life. Leather is a little scuffed and rubbed with light wear at corners.
