Springfield, Mass: Bill, Nichols and Company, 1869. By the age of 25, Gough was unemployed, homeless, and a confirmed drunkard. In 1842 he attended a temperance meeting in Worcester, Massachusetts where he took a pledge to totally abstain from liquor. He began to tell his story to eager audiences and soon embarked on a career of lecturing against the evils of drink.During his career, Gough delivered some 9,600 lectures to more than nine million people in America, Canada, England, Scotland, and Ireland. He became the most sought-after temperance lecturer in the country. When he died in 1886, the New York Times wrote that he "was probably better known in this country and in Great Britain than any other public speaker." Edges visibly but lightly worn and outer edges soft, minute loss of leather; two short tears at head of spine; spine is a shade lighter (sunned). Well bound, both covers firmly attached with chalky brown end pages, also clean. Several pages in the volume has light damp staining to the upper edge, limited to about 1/2 x 2 inches, or smaller in size; includes most of the inserted plates, also the frontispiece but not the title page; some pages near plates show foxing, otherwise very little foxing with still bright leaves, and very good presswork. Totally unmarked, no former owner labels, etc... 552 pages, plus frontispiece and 8 other plates. Scans available.

Ex- library copy - This is Volume No. 75 of the West Bath (Maine) Library Association, with their label on the inside of the front cover. The unusual library label says: "N. B. This book must not be lent out of the subscribers family, and if injured, all damage must be paid to the librarian. No volume can be kept over four weeks ; two weeks additional time will be allowed by having it renewed. A fine of two cents per day will be charged for a book kept over this time. A violation of these rules will result in a loss of membership.". Other than the brown paper wrapper pasted on the inside of the covers, the library bookplate this is a near fine first edition copy.
