Bound in publisher's original crimson cloth stamped in gilt; a volume in the American Reformers series, edited by Carlos Martyn. Near Fine with bruising to spine ends, slight fading to spine cloth, corners pushed in and contents tanned; a sharp copy. Grimke was an African American lawyer, intellectual, journalist, diplomat and community leader in the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born into slavery as the son of a slave and her white master, Henry W. Grimke. Grimke was the half-brother of noted abolitionists and feminists Sarah and Angelina Grimke. He served as the national vice-president of the NAACP, as well as president of the Washington, D.C. chapter.In his notable career as an activist, he worked worked with Frederick Douglass, William Monroe Trotter, and W. E. B. Du Bois and many others. Signed.
