This is a facsimile reprint of an edition printed by Leonard Worcester dated 1793. It is a copy from the library of a theological Seminary and is subject to all of that copy's imperfections as well as to any imperfections made in the making of the facsimile. The binding itself is in very good condition with light bumping to edges and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NO remainder marks. David Brainerd (1718 - 1747) was an American missionary to the Native Americans who had a particularly fruitful ministry among the Delaware Indians of New Jersey. Worcester, Massachusetts: Leonard Worcester, 1793. 346, 84 pages. David Brainerd was a missionary among Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and near Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1746 he published the first portion of his diaries about his experiences. After Brainerd died of tuberculosis at Edwards' home in 1748, Edwards edited and published the remaining portions of the diaries. This Worcester edition reprinted both. The book was recently and sympathetically rebound in full dark brown morocco with a red title patch, new but not obtrusive endpapers, and appropriate blind tooling. The first and last few leaves are browned and tender along the edges; the remaining pages are lightly tanned but quite supple. There is a triangle of faint waterstaining in the margins of many pages. Upper outer hinges starting, text browned, spotted and stained, upper corner of title leaf repaired with some loss. A very good copy. This work presents a biography of the famed Indian missionary adapted from his own diary, by the renowned New England divine, Jonathan Edwards. Expelled from Yale for sympathizing with the Whitefield revival and for remarking that a college tutor had "no more grace than this chair," Brainerd was nevertheless successful as a missionary to various Indian tribes in the Massachusetts/New York border region and in New Jersey.
