Large 8vo.; in the publisher's red cloth, binding D, with the title shortened on the upper board and the spine to "The Land of Oz" printed in deep navy blue with metallic-silver outlining and with the author's name moved to the lower right corner; the spine vignette has metallic silver embellishments added; and with the ambersand on the spine imprint changed to the "Fancy" style.~~On the copyright page the last typeset line reads "Published July, 1904"; the illustration facing page 23 is captioned "OLD MOMBI PUTS JACK IN THE STABLE"; with Jack Pumpkinhead embossed on the rear board.~~There are 16 full color plates. One plate, facing page 204, ["The Gump Soared Swiftly and Majestically Away"] is a very little bit rough long the leading edge; perhaps it was detached at some point and has been tipped back in [not by us]. Sixteen (16) full color plates plus black and white in-text illustrations. Features illustrated endpapers with the comedians Montgomery and Stone portraying the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, respectively, in the 1902 musical, The Wizard of Oz. Illustrated by John R. Neill. Measures 9 1/4" x 7 1/4" Rubbings on back strip. Ex-Libris on reverse of frontispiece. Binding cracked but intact. One of the full color illustrations is detached. Two pages, 152 & 153, have a stain in the center of the page. This does not effect visibility of the text.

Chicago: Reilly & Britton Company. Very Good. 1904. First Edition. Hardcover. Red cloth. The spine is decorated in black with one area highlighted in green. The lettering to the front is outlined in silver. The illustration to the front is in black, green and silver and has only very minimal rubbing. The endpapers are illustrated in dark green. The title is the earliest hand-lettered state. With all 16 color captioned inserts. This is the second state or printing with "Published, July, 1904" line to the copyright page. Minor bumps to the corners, some crimping to the spine ends. Fairly minor fading to the spine. The front hinge is fine but the rear hinge has been repaired and is a bit misaligned. There is a light-colored area of about 5/16" to the upper page edges. It is otherwise very tight and without markings or names. A much better copy than is usually encountered of the second Oz title. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 287 pages .
