Later edition of this English poet, novelist, and librarian's first book. These poems were first published in 1945; this 1966 re-issue added the poem "Waiting for breakfast, while she brushed her hair."

Second [unauthorized] edition. Copyright page gives 1945, but actual date is 1965. One of 280 copies sold with dustjacket of an edition of 500. The remaining copies, after distribution was halted, lack jackets. This copy is very slightly cocked at the top of the spine only, otherwise very fine indeed, likely unread.

Dark red buckram lettered in gold, jacket in pale orange and black tall 8vo. 36 pp. One of an estimated 500 copies of an unauthorized edition which was withdrawn when the author learned of its existence (220 could not be sold and had no jackets which had been destroyed) Bloomfield A1b. A fine, bright tight copy in a near fine dust jacket a bit thumbed at the crown, but no signs of fading. Lovely scarce copy.

Tall, slim 8vo: [4],36pp. Publisher's smooth maroon buckram (some copies bound in brownish-orange buckram, no priority known), spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed; beige dust jacket (Bloomfield calls it pale orange, but to my eye there is very little, if any, orange in it) printed in black, priced 21s. Possibly run off from the same plates as the first edition, with the copyright page still reading "First Published 1945," though this edition appeared in a larger format than the original (9 1/8'' x 5 5/8'' vs. 7 1/8" x 5"). A virtually pristine, unread copy, completely free of foxing and wear, in Fine jacket. Bloomfield A1(b). This pirated edition, limited to 500 copies, was issued in advance of the authorized Faber & Faber release (on Sepember 15,1966), but was swiftly withdrawn when Larkin discovered its existence. Largely unopened, with trace foxing, bookplate glue showing through, trace foxing, still a near fine copy of the poet's scarce first book; lacking the dust jacket. Bloomfield A1a. Mark Schorer was a leading critic (Sinclair Lewis and D. H. Lawrence) and writer and a contemporary of Larkin. He was for many years head of The English Dept. at U C Berkeley, and taught a course on modern British literature.
