As the oil on canvas portrait of Wat-Che-Mon-Ne: An Ioway Chief known as The Orator, was destroyed by fire in 1865, the original hand-colored lithographs by JT Bowen are the only surviving rendering of this essential chapter of Americana. During the first quarter of the nineteenth century as the Native American people traveled to Washington DC to discuss their plight; the loss of their lands and destruction of their people, they appealed to Thomas McKenney, the then Chief to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in whom they found a sincere advocate in the efforts to improve the welfare of the Native American people. Full tan leather with gilt decoration to boards, as well as 5 raised bands and gilt particulars to spine. All edges gilt; purple moire endpapers; silk ribbons present. 120 full color portraits, one for each Native American, throughout. Contains three black and white maps at back of volume 2. Introduction by Dr. Herman J. Viola. Light wear to boards and small abrasions to base of page edges. Small amount of sunning to endpaper edges. No previous owners' names or other markings. Pages bright and clean. Please expect extra postage as this is a heavy set. Vol. 1: xxviii, 470 pp.; Vol. 2: vii, 534 pp., 3 maps. 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches.

Philadelphia: D. Rice & A.N. Hart, 1855. Original hand-colored lithograph by J. T. Bowen after the painting by Charles Bird King. Octavo (image size approximately 6" by 9") print from the 1855 octavo edition. The print is in very good condition, with vivid coloring and some relatively minor soiling of the off-white background. The print has been archivally matted and is ready for a standard 16" by 20" frame. To-Ka-Con (McKenney said that the name means "He that inflicts the first wound") was a Yankton Sioux Chief in what is now South Dakota. He was both a tribal policeman and a chief who signed several treaties on behalf of his tribe. Thomas L. McKenney, who from 1816 until 1830 headed what was to become the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs, commissioned Charles Bird King to paint portraits of Native American delegates visiting Washington, D.C. Thomas Lorraine McKenney (1785 - 1859) was a United States official who served as Superintendent of Indian Trade and later as Head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In the mid 1820's he went West to observe Indian tribes attempting to collect artifacts & portraits of notable native Americans. After this endeavor proved somewhat disappointing he commissioned Charles Bird King (1785 - 1862) to paint portraits of visiting Indian delegates in his Washington studio.
