NY: FSG, 1994. Fine. Inscribed on the title page: "For Lila Stiff -- John McPhee."  Stiff worked at the Politics and Prose Bookstore in DC. Uncommon or scarce signed in paperback. With glossy heavy stock images throughout. A fine, durable softcover with a bookstore sticker over rear barcode.

NY: FSG, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Seventh printing, 1978. Signed on the title page: "For the Fairhaven Library, John McPhee." His fourth book, a classic. McPhee enjoys signing books to libraries and one could build a nice collection of them in time. Green cloth, ex-library, of course, with a pocket to rear free endpaper (last checked out in 2001). The jacket is in mylar and about fine, but it's affixed to the boards, with a call number on its spine. Otherwise in very good shape with a slight slant to spine and a little rubbing to bottom of boards.

NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1993. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Fine. Signed on the half-title page by McPhee. The fourth book in his geological transect across the United States, eventually all of them repackaged and refined as Annals of the Former World which won the Pulitzer Prize. This book, which travels from the Sierra to the coast, finishes with an amazing sustained description of the San Andreas fault and the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. A near fine copy with a few incidentally dogeared pages and a brief, inconspicuous gift inscription on the front free endpaper that outlines the geologic time periods: "John, Enjoy!! Dale." In a fine jacket.

First printing, a local association copy, inscribed to friends on the half title page: "To Milly and Arthur Morgan, with fond regards from tamer country, all best -- John McPhee." With an Ex Libris bookplate on the front free endpaper reading "Arthur P. Morgan." Morgan, who worked in finance, was a fellow Deerfield Prep and Princeton University graduate, and then a neighbor in Princeton. Among other civic activity, Morgan was on the board of the Princeton Public Library. A near fine book due to some light foxing on the outer face of the text block; in a fine jacket.

Association copy, inscribed on the half title in the year of publication: "For Roy Newman, with the very best wishes of Randal Whitman, and with regards, too, from Randal s brother-in-law, John McPhee, 2002." Not sure who Roy Newman is presumably he s a fisher or at least "fish-interested," since this book is a deep dive into shad but it's always so fun to see McPhee also spell out the giver of the gift. As the inscription makes clear, McPhee is married to Randal's sister, Yolanda Whitman. Yolanda provided a shad dart illustration for The Founding Fish, and she also appears in the text on several occasions in the role of what you might call a fisherman s widow. She calls the cops, worried about John, when he s been out fishing too long. Inscribed to no recipient on the half title page: "Signed in Eagle, and with envy of anyone who journeys here as well, all best, John McPhee." A fantastic and rare inscription as Eagle is the backcountry community on the Yukon River that is profiled by McPhee in the third section of this book--thus signed on location, as it were, and a kind of association copy though no one in particular is addressed. Second printing in the year of publication. A near fine book with a hint of soiling/sunning to lower board edges in a very good jacket with a few short tears to corners and some corner creasing. Laid in is a short handwritten note (ALS) on Princeton Council for Humanities stationary from McPhee thanking her for sending an article about Rancho Mission Viejo. It's dated 1994. "Oddly enough, this is written on a DC-10 on my way to California. . . . If you do come to the reading, please say hello." She did, apparently, come to the reading. A near fine book with lightest fading to lower board edges and a minor scuff and pinhole tear to front free endpaper, barely noticeable on its illustrated geologic table; otherwise fine. The price-clipped jacket is near fine.
