The letter is to his long-time assistant "Betty", in full: "This is the piece of me makings of next weeks Life, I mistook for wrapping paper - and on it I find two masterpieces by O.H. - you will note the striking similarity of both of them. Also: a second A.L.S. oblong 4to. 1 page, np / nd, in full: "Dearest Love: its time to go and I can't bring myself to waken you as you said I might. I will call up at six tonight. A perfectly scrumptious day is waiting outside your window for you to waken to. Both items are boldly signed and are in very good condition.<br/> <br/> American writer, artist and illustrator often called the American Oscar Wilde; who was also a frequent contributor to Mentor, Life and Woman's Home Journal.<br/> <br/>

A very elegeant woman is walking with her young child close beside her, the child pointing to his right. This drawing was apparently intended for publication, as there are pencilled marginal instructions. Oliver Herford was known as both a poet and illustrator, as well as for his wit. Born in England, he moved with his family to the United States when he was six, but later attended schools in both countries, as well as in France. He had a long and outstanding career as a writer and illustrator for numerous magazines including "Life" and "Harper's Weekly." He also, between 1893 and 1931, wrote and illsutrated approximately fifty books of "artistic nonesense."
