Several earlier Boston printings. Holmes oration, reflecting on the American Revolution, also focuses on the causes of the new conflict the country found itself immersed in: "it is the lifing question of the hour, and not the dead story of the past, which forces itself into all minds...." His sense of the nobility of war was not shared by his son, who was wounded twice in the conflict, and lead to a permanent chasm between them.
