Suntup Editions, 2022. Book. Illus. by Omar Rayyan. Fine. Hardcover. Signed by Illustrator(s). First Edition/First Printing. One of Time magazine's 100 best English-language novels and the most famous of all twentieth-century political allegories, Animal Farm: A Fairy Story by George Orwell is a wise, compassionate and illuminating fable that remains the ultimate satire on the dark side of modern history. The animals at Manor Farm have had enough of Farmer Jones. He's drunk, reckless and cares little for their welfare. When the boar, Old Major, shares his revolutionary plans, the animals are convinced they can thrive on their own once the despot Jones is overthrown. The barnyard animals revolt against their vicious human master only to submit to a tyranny created by their own kind. For as the pigs vie for power, they begin to bear an uncanny resemblance to the tyrants they have overthrown. A seminal anti-totalitarianism satire once considered so controversial it was rejected by several…

Descripción:
London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1940. Cloth. Very Good. SIGNED BY GEORGE ORWELL on the front free endpaper. A solid copy to boot of the 1940 true 1st edition of this uncommon collection of Orwell essays (consisting of 3 lengthy pieces --"Charles Dickens", "Boys' Weeklies" and "Inside the Whale"). Tight and VG in its dark cloth, with rubbing to the spine lettering, light spotting --and a bit of minor staining-- at the panels and just a touch of foxing to the endsheets. Orwell's signature of course is legendarily elusive and, given his relatively short life (1903-1950) and the major impact his career had in the world of 20th century literature, is extremely sought-after. Only a very small handful of 20th century authors command comparable respect in the rare book world.

Descripción:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1934. Burmese Days was first published "further afield," in the United States, because of concerns that it might be potentially libelous; that the real provincial town of Katha had been described too realistically; and that some of its fictional characters were based too closely on identifiable people. After Orwell's agent approached several other publishers, it was released by Harper & Brothers in 1934 in an edition of 2,000 copies. An English edition, with altered names, appeared a year later. Nonetheless, Orwell's harsh portrayal of colonial society was felt by "some old Burma hands" to have "rather let the side down." In a letter from 1946, Orwell wrote, "I dare say it's unfair in some ways and inaccurate in some details, but much of it is simply reporting what I have seen." In 2013, the Burmese Ministry of Information named the new translation of Burmese Days the winner of the 2012 Burma National…

Descripción:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1934. Burmese Days was several years in the writing. Orwell was drafting it in Paris during the time he spent there from 1928 to 1929. He was still working on it in 1932 at Southwold while doing up the family home in the summer holidays. By December 1933 he had typed the final version, and in 1934 he delivered it to his agent Leonard Moore for publication by Victor Gollancz, who had published his previous book. Gollancz, smarting from fears of prosecution from another author's work, turned it down because he was worried about charges of libel. Heinemann and Cape turned it down for the same reasons. After demanding alterations, Harpers were prepared to publish it in the United States, where it made its debut in 1934. In the spring of 1935, Gollancz declared that he was prepared to publish Burmese Days provided that Orwell was able to demonstrate it was not based on real people. Extensive checks were made in colonial lists that no British individuals could be…

1938. London: Secker and Warburg, 1938. 8vo., original cloth with supplied dust wrapper; pp. [vi], 313, [i]; boards of book somewhat soiled and rubbed with a light scrape along spine, some nicks to cloth at extremities of spine, wrapper with some loss and wear with front flap detatched, otherwise a very good copy. First edition signed by Orwell in full on the front free endpaper (for his friend and correspondent E. G[eorge]. Barber) and rare thus. Laid-in is a letter from Barber's daughter, explaining that her father was a member of The Left Book Club and expressing her regret that Orwell's side of their correspondence was assumed to be lost, probably during a house move, although one letter is known to have survived and is included in the Collected Letters. Sold by Judy Barber to Edinburgh dealer,William Lytle, thence by private collector to Peter Grogan, bookseller. [Together with]: "Almanaque de la Revolución Española 1937" - an illustrated wall-calendar, presumed published by…
