Marbled paper-covered boards, with brown leather tips and spine; five raised bands; titling in gilt on black labels; page-ends are marbled. Clean text; 382 pages and 376 pages. Points for the First Issue. Numerous illustrations by Thackeray. Both volumes have a frontis iiilustration and an illustrated half-title page. Armorial bookplate of William Scott Dalgairn Moncrief (1858-1913), who served in the Zulu and Boer Wars. There is some minor spotting scattered within. Both covers have split at the spine; while holding, the book is fragile. Please note the condition issue; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of restoration or repair.. First Edition. Two volumes in a very attractive binding: red cloth boards with red leather spine and tips; titled in gilt on the spine, with decorations and date (1858). Clean text; 382 pages and 376 pages. Marbled edges and endpapers. Profusely illustrated by the author. Volume One has some penciled notes in Chapter 41. Although the textblock is unfoxed, two of the plates (opposite 85 & 96) are heavily browned. Volume Two has a cracked front gutter but is holding well. Two illustrations (opposite 6 and 115) have offset. Volumes have mild rubbing to the tips and the margins of the spine. These remain attractive books that present quite well.. First Edition. Yellowish printed wraps. 24 parts. A nice set, despite the described condition impediment. This set is tight, fairly crisp and shows little sign of wear from use. Bound by H. New. Each volume illustrated by a frontispiece and a vignette title page, and by several plates and in-text illustrations (all plates present in each volume). Includes the armorial bookplate of Joseph Findlater on the front pastedown of each volume. Van Duzer 232. A nice copy of this well-known historical novel by one of the most important British novelists of the Victorian era. A Very Good set with minor fading to the spine and the corners of the boards, a few tiny spots of age darkening to the endpapers and pastedowns.
