Crosby and Nichols, 1863. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Burgundy pebbled cloth over beveled-edged boards. Gilt star on front board, spine tanned. Some wear and rubbing on edges. Top edge of spine a little pulled. Bookplate on front pastedown. Name on endpaper. A little marginal soiling on a few pages. B/W frontis and plates throughout, including map.

Boston: Crosby, Nichols & Co., 1860 (preface dated "October 20th, 1859.") [dated on the title page 1860.] 403 Pages clean & unmarked. Mostly Original Green cloth binding with moderate gereral wear to the bds. 2 former owner names, 1 a nice gift inscription. This is a partial rebind which retains the original covers but added a new spine and end papers. Gift inscribed in 1938. A great and sturdy reading example of the First Edition from 1860 at reasumable cost.

Crosby & Nichols, 1864 A nice example of this classic bound in 3/4 leather with multi-colored marbled boards and matching end papers, brown spine label. An attractive binding with moderate wear from use and time, front cover detached. 403 illustrated (1 Map frontis, 20 other etchings ) pages.

Crosby & Ainsworth, 1868 A nice example of this classic in beveled dark Blue cloth bds., 403 illustrated pages & 60 etchings. A few interior stamps and bookplate remains inside front cover, slightly cocked, and a bit worn/soiled still wuite nice looking outside with clean text and illustrations. NOTE: Bent's on page 2. Bent stated that this ("although written more than 50 years ago") was "still the best book about the White Mountains". Thomas Starr King's portrait consequently adorns Bent's Guide as Frontispiece. PS, If you do not already have a copy of Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains..... you should get one! Other than a name and date, July 28, 1875., the tome remains NF, clean and free of any major defects (a few minor wear mks and tiny spine end chips, lower corners a touch worn through, all else VG+ to NF. A quite nice looking example with clean text and illustrations. NOTE: Bent's on page 2. Second edition of this nicely illustrated New England Travelogue during the Civil War, including an ascent of Mt. Washington.
