Hillman 38 Tough paperback edition to find by this author, but the book is also in tough condition. From the outside could pass as an ok near vg book, but you open it up and there is water damage. Therefore the book is fair only. It will look good on the shelf, but leave it in the plastic bag.. First Thus. Fair.

The first paperback edition was published by Hillman in 1949. Lightly rubbed at spine ends, else fine in pictorial wrappers with 25 cent price mark. This Dell paperback is difficult to find in fine condition. Joe Wilmot and his wife Elisabeth jointly own and run a profitable smalltown movie house. Their marriage is empty and passionless and made more complicated when Carol Farmer, a business student, comes to live with them. Despite Carol's unattractiveness, Joe has an affair with her. Elisabeth discovers the affair and blackmails the couple to fix an insurance scam in which she supposedly dies (substituting an innocent victim in her place) and nets the lucrative pay-off. Murder, arson, blackmail and suicide combine to make an exciting thriller. A difficult title from an important writer.

There is a stamp on the front pastedown from a book & library service, a scuff on the front free end paper from sticker removal, and a typewritten blurb glued to the rear free end paper. No other library indications. The spine ends are bumped with a bit of rubbing to the edges of the green boards. Light tape residue to the boards and end papers where an old jacket protector had been attached. Previous owner's name stamped on the front pastedown. The binding is square and solid. The jacket has internal stiff paper reinforcement to the spine and flap folds as well as the upper and lower edges. Jacket is rubbed with small chips at the corners and spine ends, flaps are corner clipped with a crease to the rear flap, in newer mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Ex-Library.
