London Fleetway House, 1914 Good+.. no dj. all corners, and some edges, rounded and rubbed. back panel shows some delamination of the top white pastedown - but the boys and meccano detailing are still present - loss is to the outer edges. spine is a tad dulled, but no cuts or splits. internally, no inscriptions or marginalia, but ffeps show faint tarnish marks - nothing unsightly. no signs of any child scribbles or marks and all pages present and tightly bound in, save that there is a small sight of the gutter binding at top of the page facing the title. for its age it is in collectable condition.

Pearse (a little boy has a little mermaid in his fishing net), lower cover white with Meccano advert, 208 pages. Coloured frontispiece of the Hippo Boys and 3 colour plates including A.E. Jackson and Hilda Cowham (Dolly you must not splash), black and white and tinted illustrations by Jackson, Louis Wain (5 small cat drawings), Tom Browne, many of cats by S. J. Cash imitating Louis Wain, photo stories of Dutch dolls' antics by Louise Robbins. A delightful attractive annual for young children. Spine partly damp-faded, paper on lower cover eroded along the edges, no loss of image or text, 10 mm (½") split just above bottom of upper hinge, no inscriptions, contents clean and bright. Pearse, 208 pages. Coloured frontispiece and 3 colour plates including C.E. Brock and A.E. Jackson. Black and white and tinted illustrations by Jackson, Ethel K. Burgess, Louis Wain (6 small cat drawings), H. R. Millar, Hilda Cowham and W. Heath Robinson (5 large illustrations to Jack or the Golden Snuffbox and 4 large red and black illustrations to Stupider and Stupider). Hinges broken. Lacking front free endpaper. Blank corners missing to title leaf and one other leaf. Four of the illustrations have been roughly coloured in with crayon. Staining to some pages. Previous owner's inscription dated Xmas 1902. A rough reading copy. ; xii, 203, [1] pages + frontispiece. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration on spine, black lettering and illustration on front board. Page dimensions: 205 x 151mm. Text in English, translated from the German by J. Raleigh. .

(1950), small oblong 4to, 185 x 225 mm, 7½ x 9 inches, blue and white checked thin card covers, repeat colour plate on upper cover, 12 pages. 5 delightful postcard size coloured illustrations in the text by Louis Wain, each showing cats and kittens, some dressed. Simple prose text for young children. Spine very slightly worn, tiny crease to upper corners of covers. A very good plus copy. See Cope, Nursery Postcards, page 60 where our book is illustrated. The original Louis Wain postcards were published by W. E. Mack in a set of six entitled The Cat's Academy circa 1920. Not used in our book is one entitled The Dog's Academy. Unpaginated with coloured frontis. by Louis Wain plus many full page & text illustrations also 6pp period advertisements. Some light foxing , internally very good. Other artists include: H. Weir, Harold Copping, C. E. Brittan, E.A. Tilly, R. Strobel, H. Dixon, Phil A. Ashley, A, Flydon, J. B. Greene, Ernest Liozell, and more. Coloured pictorial covers with title on spine. Hinge cracked but firm, some edge wear. .

A 3" adhesive tape repair across lower end of spine. Edges of boards heavily rubbed with loss of paper along the edges and margins. Corners of boards heavily worn, rubbed, and rounded. The frontispiece illustration has a 4" tear with an adhesive sellotape repair on the reverse side. Also a 1 3/4" tear to the lower inner corner of the frontispiece, again with an old sellotape repair on the reverse side. The sellotape repairs to the frontispiece have caused adhesive tape staining to the paper of the frontispiece, and also to the neighbouring region of the front free endpaper. An early owner's inscription on the front endpaper - "To Patti with Love from Auntie May", beneath which is another recent inscription - "(a family friend) about 1924". Cover is detached (but present and all in one piece) , signatures still held together so suitable for rebinding. Lacking front and rear end sheets. Title page and verso are neatly colored. Pages are toned with heavy thumbing, two pages with tears up to 2" but in good condition. Complete text and b&w illustrations with several color (single-color) plates. .
