A fine copy, the book is in the publisher's tan cloth in a buckram spine with bright gilt lettering. Internally the book is crisp and fresh, the only blemish being some scuffs to the title page. In a very good dust wrapper, lightly spotted and soiled with nick to head of spine and one short closed tear to lower panel. A very pleasing copy. Fine 1945

THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL, Alfred Bartlett, 1902, an early American edition, wear and chipping to the spine and lower fore edge corner tips, else a good copy with vg+ contents. 1/550 copies of this unauthorized edition. This copy bears the bookplate of Michigan politician Thomas Weadock on the f.p.d. whose collection of Napoleona was at one time second to none.

States 'Leonard Smithers' [but a pirate edition], London, states 1899 [but c. 1907]. 31 pp, previous owner's name on front end-paper, upper board foxed and discoloured, else very good copy in beige boards with cream, cloth spine.

Clean text; 39 pages. Nicely bright and clear, printed on quality laid paper. There is some rubbing and darkening around the margins. The fragile spine label is chipped vertically with about 50% loss. In an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Seventh Edition: this is the first edition to use Oscar Wilde's name on the title page, in parenthesis. Mustard cloth boards with cream white spine, gold lettering along spine. Shelfwear: light scuffing along edges and cover boards, some light smudges on cover boards, heavy foxing on free endpapers and inside covers, light foxing on page leafs. Tightly bound, no marks. Volume is in Very Good condition..

This is the fifth printing of "The Ballad of Reading Gaol," published anonymously under the pseudonym C.3.3., which stood for cell block C, landing 3, cell 3 being the location of Wilde's cell in Reading Gaol. This ensured that notorious Wilde's name did not appear on the poem's title page, and thus it was not commonly known that it was Wilde behind the poem until the 7th printing in June 1899, which was published using Wilde's name. The poem was published by Leonard Smith, who is deeply associated with the decadents, having published the Savoy periodical in which Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley featured. Fair Condition. Cream cloth covered spine with green cloth covered boards and gilt titles to spine. Amorial plate to front pastedown and neat previous owner's inscription to reverse of copyright page. Front free end paper has been removed. Rough-cut edges. Binding and hinges are firm. Pages are lightly tanned. London: Leonard Smithers, 1899. First published in 1898 anonymously under Wilde's Prisoner identification number, this is a copy of the Seventh Printing, which was the first to identify him by name. This copy also states "Entered at the Library of Congress Washington, U.S.A." indicating an American issue; a bit uncommon thus. Ochre cloth binding, with gilt lettering on a linen spine. Clean text; 31 pages. This is a Very Good copy, but there are some issues. The corners are bumped; there is a spot on the front cover and a few stains on the rear. Some cracking to the hingesgive it a shaken feel. Also, there is a long inscription in Latin (also done into English) on the FFEP, and a signature on the Dedication Page. A decent-enough place-holder, but certainly not for the advanced collector. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

A robust copy of the last authorised edition published by Smithers; one of 2000 copies. Quarter white cloth over light brown cloth covers, uncut, one early leaf with a couple of small tears in the fore-edge margin, the following leaf with one small tear, no loss to either, in all other ways a very good copy, with Wilde's name in the title but not on the spine.
