The binding has been rebacked, retaining the original spine, and is bright, clean and sound. The corners have light wear and turning, and there is some fading to edges as usual. The original green endpapers have been retained with repair. There is the decorative bookplate of Francis Hemming, the entomologist, and the signature of C Hemming to the front pastedown, and a pencil signature (not readable) to the fep. The bindings have been rebacked, preserving the original spines and endpapers, and are clean, sound and tight. Vol I had lost the top section of the spine with some of the decorative title. Sir John Richardson (1787–1865), surgeon, naturalist and Arctic explorer, went on Sir John Franklin's first two Arctic expeditions as ship's doctor and naturalist, and made observations and collected a large number of plant and animal specimens from the Canadian Arctic.
