Inside all pages, some of which remain uncut and plates in very good clean and bright condition. A nice copy.

EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1838 A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 31 hand coloured plates and a hand coloured vignette title page. The binding has been rebacked, retaining the original spine, and is bright, clean and sound. The corners have light wear and turning, and there is some fading to edges as usual. The original green endpapers have been retained with repair. There is the decorative bookplate of Francis Hemming, the entomologist, and the signature of C Hemming to the front pastedown, and a pencil signature (not readable) to the fep. EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1837 A very good copy of the 1st edition of The Birds of Western Africa, in 2 volumes in the original publisher's cloth binding with 64 hand coloured plates. The bindings have been rebacked, preserving the original spines and endpapers, and are clean, sound and tight. Vol I had lost the top section of the spine with some of the decorative title. It is only slightly sunned at the edge of the boards which have light wear as do the corners. The spine and board edges to Vol II are more sunned with wear to corners. Page edges untrimmed. Illustrated with 28 black and white etched plates. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and tight with minor cracking to the head of the joints and a little wear to the extremities. The contents, with a previous owner's (early twentieth century) bookplate to the front pastedown, light offsetting from the plates to the facing text pages and faint spotting to the edges of the plates, are otherwise wonderfully clean and bright throughout. The plates themselves remain bold and fresh. A superb copy, entirely in its original state. Sir John Richardson (1787–1865), surgeon, naturalist and Arctic explorer, went on Sir John Franklin's first two Arctic expeditions as ship's doctor and naturalist, and made observations and collected a large number of plant and animal specimens from the Canadian Arctic.
On his return to England after the second expedition he began to write this four-volume work of natural history, first published between 1829 and 1837. A volume is dedicated to each of the classes of mammal, bird, fish and insect, which are found in the Canadian Arctic.
