Cover illustration by Thomas Nast showing Hamlet with the caption, "Madness (yet there's method in it)," a play on the concept of separation of church and state with references to the U.S. government and its public schools vs. the Roman Catholic Church and even a quote from Abraham Lincoln with a play on it mocking the Church: "A government of the priests, by the priests, for the priests, shall perish from the earth." A second full-page illustration (p. 44) showing a lion with a stern lawyer's face in "The Lawyer's Den" with front paws perched on a large bag labelled "6.000.000 stolen from the City of New York" and a smaller bag labelled "Bondsmen Money that Belong to the City of N. This issue features two illustrations by Thomas Nast. One is a two-page, pro-Grant spread showing Lady Columbia with her hand covering her eyes and the other resting on a piece of paper with the message, "'Had I but served my God with half the zeal I served my country, He would not in mine age have left me naked to mine enemies.'" The caption below is "Grant's Last Annual Message. Columbia. 'I did not think to shed a tear in all my miseries; but thou hast forced me out of thy honest truth to play the woman.'--Shakespeare." Another related illustration (full-page) shows a Caesar-like figure falling on a sword labeled "Sensations" and "Scares." The caption reads, "'Caesar, now by still.'" This issue features two full-page illustrations by Thomas Nast, one on the front page portraying a lion and bear at the North Pole with the caption, "Another outrage at the pole (poll)--the British lion bear-dozed." The other is of a man with the face of a donkey and "red tape" wound around his chest and legs. He is reading a "Revolutionary Programme of the 'Reform' Party' promulgated by the (N.Y.) This is a visual historical record of the first Japanese Embassy to America, 1860. . THE CAPTION READS: "THE RECEPTION OF THE JAPANESE EMBASSY BY PRESIDENT BUCHANAN IN THE EAST ROOM OF TEH WHITE HOUSE, WASHINGTON." . Original, complete disbound issue that shows slight wear at the spine and light fading, o/w fine. Also, spectacular two-page illustration by Thomas Nast showing a blindfolded Lady Justice being led by a devil figure to the edge of a cliff as God overlooks from his perch in the clouds holding an hour glass nearly empty. The caption reads, "' 'Tis the times' plague, when madmen lead the blind.' -- Shakspeare." The illustration is in remarkably bright condition and quite suitable for framing. Size is 16" wide and 22" tall. Full-page collage of illustrations by G.S. Reinhart, "The Centennial--Bits from Our Artist's Sketch-Book" and another full-page illustration by Schell and Hogan of the opening day of the Centennial exhibition at the intersection of Elm and Belmont Avenue in Philadelphia.
