Women's suffrage appeared on the ballot in Oregon six times (in 1884, 1900, 1906, 1908, 1910, and 1912), which was more than any other state. "When the pioneer mothers of Oregon toiled across the plains beside their weary and heart-sick husbands, beset with perils…did they think the coming generation would be ungrateful and selfish enough to deny them the fullest political prerogative in the State they helped to found?" . A collection of quotes from British and American poets organized into fourteen sections with questions as headings, including "What is your character? (Gentleman)," "What is the character of your lady-love?" and "What is your destiny?" Each section contains sixty quotes. To play the game, a player is selected as the "questioner." The questioner then reads out a heading to the other players, who respond with a number between one and sixty. The corresponding quote in each section answers the question. For example, a player who selects number three in the "What is the personal appearance of him who loves you?" would be awarded with the following answer from the Merry Wives of Windsor: "He hath but a little wee face, with a little yellow beard. Contains an introductory leaf listing the works included and a brief description of each in addition to leaves from twelve different monumental works of English printing from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries, each matted on gray card. Some offsetting from the adhesive that has been used to tip in the leaves and gray card matting. Some individual leaves with light toning or foxing. Binding extremities slightly toned with a few small stains. Lacks front flyleaf. Minor foxing, intermittent light toning. Nancy Witcher Astor (1879-1964) was born in Danville, Virginia, but moved to England with her husband Waldorf Astor at the age of twenty-six. In 1919, Nancy Astor became the first woman in the United Kingdom to take her seat as a Member of Parliament. The materials in the present item chronicle Astor's successful campaign in the general election of 1935 and offer context into the social and political climate of the United Kingdom at the time. It gives its name to this book which was written and photographed in Spain" (colophon). "Time reconstructed. In this book time is reconstructed and moved backwards and forwards in a short story. A series of photographs give the story a real space in which to exist.

The first printing of Farr's preliminary report describing the use of the Scheutz calculator to prepare life tables, published five years before his English Life Tables (1864, see Garrison & Morton 1700.1), and representing the very earliest application of computers to medical statistics. The table was one of the greatest achievements of William Farr, the Scheutzes and, of course, Charles Babbage, who was inspirational in this project. Modern boards. . Savitsch (1902-?) was a doctor and sexologist. Born in St. Petersburg, his family fled to Japan on the outbreak of the Russian Revolution. He later moved to America, where he struggled with poverty and tuberculosis, but became a doctor. After graduating from the University of Chicago, he studied at the Pasteur Institute and the Bunge Institute in Antwerp. At the latter, he did field work on sleeping sickness in the Belgian Congo. Much of his early work was done in the area of tuberculosis, and many of the articles here are on that subject. A disastrous mine explosion in England in 1813 led to the formation of the society to study the nature of these accidents and appeal to scientists to propose remedial measures. Their first report was issued in 1815 and prompted Davy, Stephenson and others to devise their safety lamps. The Davy lamps consisted of enclosing the lamp in metal gauze, and thereby lowering the ignition point of methane, the chief constituent of "fire-damp", the explosive gas in coal mines. George Stephenson arrived at a similar design at about the same time, and a bitter controversy followed.

It was very popular, going to six editions by the turn of the century. Madan 2994 notes that "The first edition must have sold off well. The present edition is a reprint in a smaller size and type, with revisions and additions, and some ornaments. The last section of the whole book is a fair example of the changes.
