Kirkua Review: This ran in the S.E.P. and resulted in more demands for the story in book form than ever recorded. Well, here it is and it is a honey. Imagine ten people, not knowing each other, not knowing why they were invited on a certain island house-party, not knowing their hosts. Then imagine them dead, one by one, until none remained alive, nor any clue to the murderer.

Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Grisham's first book, written and published while he was still working as a lawyer and serving in the Mississippi State Legislature. Grisham's book was turned down by a number of publishers, and was finally picked up by the tiny Wynwood Press, which did a modest first printing of 5000 copies. The book didn't sell well, probably because the small publisher was virtually unknown, especially for publishing fiction, and also lacked marketing dollars. When Grisham's second novel, The Firm, was bought by Doubleday and published in 1991, copies of the first printing of A Time to Kill were still available from the publisher.
Personal note: I recently saw an interview with Grisham on TV, discussing his accomplishments and this particular book. The reporter asked him about the 5000 books, printed. Grisham replied that he, personally bought… Leer más

From bestselling author Connie Willis, comes a masterful tale of romance, time travel, history, and misadventure. It is 1888, and Ned Henry is shuttling between the 1940s and modern day, researching Coventry Cathedral for a patron who wants to rebuild it. But when the time continuum is disrupted, Ned must scramble to set things right, in the most hilarious book of its kind since John Irving's The Water-Method Man and A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy O'Toole (Des Moines Sunday Register)…

It is universally recognized as the greatest masterpiece of Japanese prose narrative, perhaps the earliest true novel in the history of the world. Until now there has been no translation that is both complete and scrupulously faithful to the original text. Edward G. Seidensticker's masterly rendering was first published in two volumes in 1976 and immediately hailed as a classic of the translator's art. It is here presented in one unabridged volume, illustrated throughout by woodcuts taken from a 1650 Japanese edition of The Tale of Genji. Slight toning, else content appears as unread and unblemished with near fine wraps displaying minimal surface/edge wear, as shown. This is John Reed's eyewitness account of the Russian Revolution. A contemporary journalist writing in the first flush of revolutionary enthusiasm, he gives a gripping record of the events in Petrograd in November 1917, when Lenin and the Bolsheviks finally seized power. Containing verbatim reports both of speeches by leaders and the chance comments of bystanders, set against an idealized backcloth of the proletariat, soldiers, sailors, and peasants uniting to throw off oppression, Reed's account is the product of passionate involvement and remains an unsurpassed classic of reporting. Reed is buried with other Bolshevik heroes beside the Kremlin wall. In October 1917 Vladimir Lenin led the revolutionary Bolsheviks in an armed insurrection in Petrograd, an event known as the October Revolution and a pivotal moment in the larger Russian Revolution.… Leer más

Slight bump at head/heel of spine. There's good hefty police work here and dramatic interplay of violent characters for the long series of coincidences that threaten Meg Elginbrodde's second wedding and for the deceptively vacant and gentle Albert Campion to follow the prickling of his thumbs in fog-drenched London. With Divisional Detective Chief Inspector Luke he tracks down the impersonator of Meg's dead husband, loses him and discovers that her groom to be, Levett, has disappeared. An outbreak of wantonly wicked killings by an escaped convict set them on the trail of lethally experienced Jack Havoc hiding out with a roving band of ex-service men, all intent on the locating of "The Treasure" belonging to Meg's first husband, and, with the rescuing of Levett, there is a dash to France and the mysterious Ste. About the book: What happened to network television in the 1980s? How did CBS, NBC, and ABC lose a third of their audience and more than half of their annual profits?
Ken Auletta, author of Greed and Glory on Wall Street, tells the gripping story of the decline of the networks in this epically scaled work of journalism. He chronicles the takeovers and executive coups that turned ABC and NBC into assets of two mega-corporations and CBS into the fiefdom of one man, Larry Tisch, whose obsession with the bottom line could be both bracing and appalling.
Auletta takes us inside the CBS newsroom on the night that Dan Rather went off-camera for six deadly minutes; into the screening rooms where NBC programming wunderkind Brandon Tartikoff watched two of his brightest prospects for new series thud disastrously to earth; and into the boardrooms where the… Leer más

Content appears as new, unopened, unread and unblemished with Very Good, (slightly smudged boards) but displaying no significant surface/edge wear. Kirkus Review: Like her other recent, long mysteries (Death of an Expert Witness, The Skull Beneath the Skin), James' new novel is absorbing reading, chockablock with arresting characters, edgily compelling conversation, and grainy atmospherics. Also like those books, however, it isn't a first-rate-mystery—and its final chapters, suddenly reaching for ambitious psychological melodrama (reminiscent of Ruth Rendell), show James' talent straining against the genre limitations. Sir Paul Berowne, a former Crown minister who has recently had some sort of religious awakening, is found bloodily dead in the vestry of a humble London church; nearby is the body of a similarly slain tramp. Scotland Yard's first impression? That an unhinged Berowne killed the tramp, then committed suicide. But poet-sleuth Adam Dalgliesh, leading a… Leer más

Private Library plate FPD, slight toning else content appears as unread and unblemished with fine, Richly decorated boards displaying minimal surface/edge wear. Here's the story of what happened to the author of Land Below the Wind when the Japs overran Borneo. The audience fascinated by the earlier book will find the merest hint of that contagious enthusiasm, that love of the country she had made her own, that at-one-ness with her husband, who was in the British forestry service- a hint in the opening chapters of the book, when baby George is born and the little family rejoices in the present joys, while recognizing the cloud on the horizon. Then everything changes- the Japs come- the Keiths are separated, Harry to go the to one concentration camp, Agnes and the baby to another. A grim picture, with nothing of beauty left; a picture of filth and hunger and scarcely existent clothing, of fear and disgust, of strained human relations -- and of the rare and risky meetings at… Leer más
